Turn 3: When Least Expected

Post by Corporal Hicks » Mon Mar 24, 2025 5:42 pm

Evening fell before the Lieutenant returned to tell them what they already knew by now. The threat was confirmed to be a return of the xenomorph infestation that had struck the planet 14 years ago. The xenomorphs were believed to have arrived on Zenus Vier as part of a larger incident involving a dozen specimens that had been taken from LV-426, a partially terraformed planet that had seen the first outbreak over 15 years ago. Since then, the stolen specimens had been scattered across the galaxy to various systems, where they were propagated by various groups, and destroyed by Colonial Marines in an uphill battle against the feared final outcome; a major outbreak on Earth or one of her larger colonies. So far, this civilization-ending disaster had been averted, despite the efforts of various reckless bad actors in the galactic community.

Whatever the origin, and whatever the catalyst of their return, xenomorphs were now growing again in a region near the nuclear blast zone of the Draconis Major Campaign. The quarantine cordon was not just for xenomorphs, but extended to all civilians and military forces in the region. No doubt there would be some way to verify the health of them in time, but for now, the military was taking no risks in allowing people out.

The Devil Dawgs were given a prefabricated metal house to use as a barracks, with cots supplied by the local garrison. Having seen Private Quinn slip away with the waitress, few were surprised when he slipped back into the barracks shortly after 3 am. They slept in relative ease, however, knowing that the whole town was surrounded by automated sentry guns that were monitored by the garrisoned mercenary troops that they had met.

In the morning, the Marines awoke to find an APC delivered, and mission orders. They had been ordered to move northwest into the forested hills to look for the aliens’ nest. Nothing had been visible from the sky or satellite imagery, and so it was believed that these xenomorphs were probably tunneling and living underground, as their predecessors had done 14 years ago.

The mission was a dud. The Marines found nothing but trees and hills. They returned to Gnissau that evening with nothing to show for their efforts, but were grateful to receive more free food and beer. They also received news that a nest of xenomorphs had been discovered thirty miles to the north. As expected the creatures were digging a honeycomb of tunnels underground, but they had been caught early, before they could dig deep or increase their numbers. A combined team of Marines and mercenaries had delivered an explosive payload into the heart of the nest and it had been detonated. Everyone hoped that this was the only such nest, and that the threat had been neutralized, but the older members of the platoon were not optimistic.

The following day, the platoon went out on another patrol, searching another section of the woods to the northwest. Again, they found nothing to indicate xenomorphs. It was less surprising this time, and they returned to Gnissau that evening with less apprehension than before. Again, Private Quinn returned late to the barracks. But this night would not be so peaceful as the previous two…

The Marines awoke to the terrifying, blood-curdling scream of a woman somewhere outside in the darkness. It was ten minutes until 0400. They rose from their slumber with painful urgency, some sitting up in their cots, others diving to the ground, taking cover or grabbing for weapons and armor. For a moment, silence fell, and they wondered if it was a false alarm. Then, the unmistakable clatter of pulse rifle fire cut through the silence, and a piercing, inhuman scream.

The Marines of second squad were sleeping in the kitchen of the small house, while everyone else was quartered upstairs, including their squad leader. The four of them, incidentally, were isolated from everyone else when the window exploded inward, showering the floor with glass. In the almost absolute darkness, they saw something moving, as if pulling itself through the window. It was almost invisible except for the slightest reflection of light from the various kitchen appliances, and the clock on the stove. They heard a thumping, the crunch of broken glass, and a faint hissing sound.

Paulson rapidly ficked on the lights he had been sleeping right below the switches as the un mistakable sound of a pulse rifle ripped through the night.
He pulled on his fatigues and boots, then pistol and ammo finally he grabed the incinerator, he wasn't sure if he had time to put on armour so he quickly looked around at the rest of first squad to see if they where fully gearing up or going out as is.
the scream clinched it for him definatly not a false alarm he slapped on his chest armour asnd spare flammer ammo and got ready to move out.
pulling out his motion detector he did a quick scan of the immediate area.
<roll perception, motion detector>
Paulson looked at the return signal filtered out marines and civillians with id tags and reported what he saw.

"Unknown contact bearing 020 degrees less than 10 meters clear return" Paulson reported.
" two more further out at 045 maybe 50 meters" he continued
keeping his eyes on the motion detector he got ready to move out still feeling a bit exposed with only half his armour on.

Ava was jolted awake by the scream—a sharp, blood-curdling sound that shattered the stillness of the night. For a moment, there was only silence as she sat up in her cot, heart hammering in her chest. She had been asleep in the upstairs barracks, a far cry from the chaos unfolding below. But when the sound of pulse rifle fire followed, she didn’t hesitatem, knowing there was definite action below.

Her green eyes flicked to grab her motion detector, much like Paulson, instinctively checking the readings as her mind raced. It was gunfire. And she had a role to play. She wasn’t part of the direct combat, but the last thing she was going to do was sit by idly while her squadmates were in danger.

<roll perception, motion detector>

After looking at the tracker, she went to grab her gear, slipping into her boots and pulled on her vest, adjusting the straps while her fingers moved to get her comms equipment ready. She needed to be in contact with the team. The panic rising in her chest was met with a firm resolve as she plugged into the comm channels, her hands steady as she powered up her systems.

Ava spoke into the mic, her voice low but firm. “This is Private Blake, ready to assist with comms. Over.”

Giosso rolled out of the bunk instinctually as sharp report of pulse shot reports ripped through the unsettled rural quiet. He was saved from a bruise-inducing impact on the tile with the kitchen’s sink-side rug. Still in the process of jolting awake, he pulled the cot down with him, rotating it into obscuring, if exceedingly flimsy, cover.

As his the world around him started to come back to memory, he reached up blindly and felt for the tactical computer that he’d been charging at a convenient coffee-machine-side plug. Finding it quickly, he pulled it free and entered his credentials, throwing soft green light into his still blinking eyes. His eyes struggled to focus even as his practiced fingers pushed through the interface to connect to the exterior sentry guns.

Suddenly, even as he was adjusting and absorbing what he’d learned, his concentration was shattered by the sound of glass breaking just dozens of feet away. His stomach turned. He laid the hardened tablet face down on the tile to cover the glow and slowly reached for the pistol that had been discarded on his rucksack. His ears strained to hear the clicking of xenoform claws on prefabricated plastic tiles.

Gideon's eyes shoot open at the sound of the screams, though he does not move from the bed. He jumped in shock when the glass explodes out, then ripped his blanket off. He had purposely laid with his feet facing the door, leaving his head towards the window behind him. Damn you, he cursed himself silently. He rolls out of the bed, grabbing his pistol as he does so. He beelines it to the light switch, his right elbow smashing painfully on the walls corner as he runs through the dark. "Ngh, Goddamn it!"

"Ow, fuck! Shit!" he says as he steps on something sharp by the light switch. He gingerly takes another step forward and can feel something in his bare feet scraping the ground painfully. He hammers the light on with his left hand, his right hand leveling his pistol towards the shattered glass.

Soles, was already stirring when the scream cut through the night. He grabbed his pistol from under his pillow and slammed his socked feet into his combat boots as he setup. He strained to listen in the darkness seeking to locate the injured person outside.

He was standing up and making his way towards a window when he heard the distinct sound of a M41A Pulse rifle barking to life. In the darkness, he located the muzzle flash. He quickly turned and grabbed the remainder of his gear. As he was strapping on the final piece of equipment, he heard the sounds of shattering glass and muffled shouts and .movements from below! He slammed open the door and began to descend the stairs.

Taking one more quick glance at her radar, Pvt. Blake reports, "Another due left about 90 degrees from original target at about 40 meters."

During this time, she was loading up her shotgun with shells and getting her sidearm holstered, a modified VP70 with the arm brace packed into her pack.

The overhead kitchen light flickered and then came on, revealing the horrifying sight of a hideous alien form crawling through the window. It moved like a giant insect, with swift, jerking motions of its arms and legs. Its shiny black exoskeleton writhed through the window and it dropped to the floor of the kitchen, its eyeless face looking around the room and taking them all in. The xenomorph hissed and looked decisively at Private Heinrich, and condensed its body to the floor as it prepared to spring. Heinrich felt cold terror coursing through his veins at the very thought of coming into contact with that giant alien monster, but he had his back to the closed door.

Torres jolted awake, the sound of heavy movement and clawing echoing outside the fragile walls of the small house. Before he could gather his thoughts, the window exploded inward, shards of glass scattering across the floor. His pulse quickened. Fumbling in a haze of disorientation, he reached for his pulse rifle, dropping the magazine in his haste before finally snapping it into place.

Through the static of his earpiece, the frantic tactical chatter of his fellow Marines barely registered. His movements were automatic as he strapped on the remainder of his armor, his hands trembling as he loaded a fresh clip. Then, he heard it—movement. Heavy, deliberate.

Torres turned to face the sound, his breath catching in his throat. Standing in the shattered remnants of the window was... it.

The creature’s grotesque form defied nature, a nightmare stitched together from humanity’s darkest fears. The reek of decay and something inexplicably foul hit him in waves. For a moment, Torres was paralyzed, his mind struggling to comprehend the horror before him.

“What the hell is that!?” he shouted, his voice cracking as he squeezed the trigger. A sharp burst of five rounds cut through the suffocating tension, driven more by instinct than precision.

Sixtus, for his sins, had come back late to the "barracks" after making a run outside to "retrieve something he left at the bar". He returned late, giving a tired but cocky salute to whoever was on fire watch that night. He slid into his cot, his boots set and ready for his feet to dive into. Despite not having seen any xenomorphs, he still considered himself in enemy territory. Sadly, after only an hour of sleep, he was jolted awake by the chattering sound of pulse rifle fire. He was up and looking around with his rifle in hand, his brain running on autopilot while his conscious thoughts were still catching up.

(Roll Awareness to hear or see anything from upstairs room)

Upon hearing glass breaking from downstairs, Sixtus shifts the aim of his rifle to the stairwell and moves down the stairs, activating the flashlight clipped on his rifle's barrel.

"Ah, fuck," is all Gideon can whisper before opening fire with his meager pistol. He reaches behind himself as he fires and turns the knob to open the door, but the door doesn't budge.

"Goddamn it," he says emphatically as yet another thing does not go his way. Of course the door opens inward, right into him. He steps aside and swings the door open, intending to leave the confined space, but hesitates. What was it Paulson said? Two more he saw?

Gideon quickly did the odds and decided to stay inside, instead opting to swing around the door and use it as a makeshift barrier between him and the alien. He peaks one eye around the corner and switch his gun to his left hand, letting the gun barely peak out as he fires.

"Get this one down so I can get my fucking rig on!" he shouts out.

Cold terror ran down Private Heinrich's spine as he stared down his death. He fiddled with the door handle in panic and managed to pull it open as the creature prepared to leap. His offhand came up with the pistol, and he stumbled as he backed up. His arm wobbled and one bullet tore a hole in the wall a foot above the xenomorph before he lost his balance and fell over backwards.

Private Torres opened fire with his pulse rifle, sending a single five-round burst at the alien. The shots echoed in the small room and the butt of the rifle kicked hard against his unarmored shoulder. The shots were perfectly aimed, and the alien's head exploded with an arc of yellowish liquid that splashed across the floor. Giosso fired two pistol rounds into the dead body before his brain could catch up to the fact that it was stone-cold dead.

Heinrich looked up in fear and reflexively raised his left hand to protect his eyes as something shot through the air at his face. It felt like a liquid splashed on his hand and pistol, and he ventured another look to see the creature laying dead on the floor under the window. Smoke was rising in thin wisps around it, but it was still. Then, he felt a burning pain in his hand, as if it had been splashed in caustic liquid. Looking down, he saw smoke beginning to rise from his wrist and hand. He dropped the disintegrating pistol, screaming with pain and shock as Sergeant Soles and Private Quinn barreled down the stairs to see him laying at the bottom.
