Turn 18: Close Contact

The APAC's screeched to a halt as they came under punishing fire from the enemy combatants dug in around the crash site that now all but blocked the route forwards. It was clear that the only way past, without taking significant casualties, was to first neutralise the threat. To this end, APAC's 1 & 3 slewed off-road and took up defensive positions from which their turret gunners began pouring suppressive fire into the wrecked dropship. Meanwhile, APAC 2 moved further down the road, Sokalova blasting her turret guns at anything that moved, and Morse, Paulson and Henniger rapidly dismounted into cover of the APAC's armoured bulk.

Return fire slashed back at the marines from multiple firepoints around the crashed dropship. The windows of APAC 2 shattered under the fusillade and dozens of holes were punched in the outer skin of the vehicle. Most of it appeared to be rifle fire and this was stopped by the inner layers of composite armour but something over there was clearly of heavier calibre, maybe whatever the Chinese equivalent of the Smartgun was, and it started punching holes through the bodywork of the APAC, the high-velocity rounds whipping past the huddled men of 3rd squad and ricocheting off of Sokalova's gun-shield.

In the back of APAC 1, Kelly had wrestled PFC Carvalho out of his seat and onto the floor of the vehicle. Once he had room to work the medic rapidly administered another dose of sedative and the wounded man stopped convulsing and relaxed back into a coma state. Kelly and Sykes watched him anxiously for a moment but no angry nightmare worm burst out of his chest in a welter of blood so it appeared the danger had passed for the moment.

Kelly glanced up at SgtMaj Sykes with a worried look on his face.
"That probably won't work a third time boss" he said with feeling "If he's gonna live we need to get him to that WY facility ASAP."

bullets whizzed passed Paulson one even glanced his armour but failed to penetrate, they could not stay here long, even though the APC was giving them some cover it was not enough from whatever was firing at them. Paulson looked at the ranges across the street then checked them on the motion tracker, multiple signals around the 30-40 meter mark, he swore under his breath, too far to flush out with either grenades or his incinerator.

"30-40 meters" he passed on "reasonable cover from wreckage between us and them" He said after a quick glance, "you two provide cover fire along with the APC so i can get closer?" Paulson asked Morse and Henigger. a small part of him wanted Morse to say no, but he new he probably wouldn't, they could easily become pinned here and then slowly picked off, they needed to move and to do it soon.

Paulson went to grab a smoke grenade and found he had only 6 frags instead, he looked up questioningly at the others or where they going to have to use the APC remote that they had brought to launch some cover so Paulson could maneuver into a firing position?

Paulson handed to remote to Henigger as Morse would be laying down a fusillade of fire to give him some cover, he took two deep breaths "ready!" he said although inside he felt anything but.

SGT Samantha Hall

(It's been so long that I've entirely forgotten which APAC Sam is in....also, since NONE of my squad seem to be posting, I'm going to move to where the other PCs are...hope this is okay)

Samantha called for Dmitri to take over the Gun and provide covering fire/overwatch while she readied her Pulse Rifle and moved to help out those engaged on the ground....

Switching the Comms Channel on, she called out; "This is SGT Hall, I'm moving in to assist. Moving to provide some flanking fire....", she said as she moved fast and low, sticking to cover and spreading out wide to be in a position to fire on those firing on Paulson, Morse and co. When she found some cover, she took a quick look to see muzzle flashes and/or movement and took a deep breath. Then she popped up, fired a long burst, then a second and then ducked low and belly-crawled to a new position as she expected return fire coming her way....

Having some of the flak from the bullets hitting the turret shield on the APAC, Sokolova checks on occasion that the integrity of the shield stays intact. She keeps her aim toward any of the moving figures or where any of the muzzle flash was spotted.

She calls over the radio to the others nearby, "I keep them busy for you, Paulson. If worst comes, I'll grab sniper, but do us proud so we niet have to do it for you. Let me know if change in plans and I will adjust. Spacibo."

The rush of adrenaline of the fight keeps her focused on her targets, making sure to stay focused on her fire to try to make her bursts matter.

<Aim, burst fire, repeat>

Sykes nodded, "Copy that, Kelly." They needed to clear those hostiles quickly and move forward as soon as possible. He turned on his radio to the whole platoon, "Stay calm, keep fighting. We need to push them out of there. Be aggressive." With that, he opened the door and jumped out of the APC. He found a good position with the most cover possible and started putting lead downrange at the nearest target.

Covering fire streamed in from multiple directions this was as good as it was going to get, Paulson took one more deep breath and dashed towards the next nearest piece of cover he could see, bullets whizzed round him but thankfully as yet non hit him.

Alas he was still out of range, summing up all his courage he again prepared to step out and make another dash.

<tag Henigger to pop smoke>
<tag everyoneone else for covering fire>
dash to nearest cover.

(Sorry everyone for my absence)

Henniger popped smoke, and gave Paulson a decent head start before sprinting off after him. He wasn't leaving him hanging.

Henniger had chopped about fifteen meters before he halted and changed direction out more into the open. He was at an oblique to Paulson who was running all out like his recruiter was behind him with his reenlistment docos. Henniger dug his rear boot heal in and stomped his front knee. His fatigues squelched with contact with the ferrocrete but held. When he felt stable, he let off a long steam of suppressive fire at the enemy. While the carbine bucked his fingers danced a HDSPE smoke round into the breach of his underslung and fired an additional cover round across Paulson's trajectory.

He immediately hit the ferrocrete flat and began rolling hellishly towards the only cover his peripheral vision identified.
