Turn 15: Mount Up, Marines!

Post by wargamerGM » Sat Jun 11, 2022 4:09 am

The courtyard outside the bar was a scene of barely controlled chaos. Already in shock after such a close encounter with the brutal realities of life on the rim of human civilisation, the sight of the attacking gunship sent the civilians into blind panic. They dashed in all directions looking for cover, a way to escape or simply running blindly.

Meanwhile, the Devil Dawgs moved with a purpose, mounting up on the waiting APACs with trained efficiency. Sgt Hall called for her squad to join her from the Gunners position of APAC 3 while SSgt Morse marshaled his squad at APAC 2. SgtMaj Sykes sat in the passenger seat of APAC one, talking on the radio to Major Myers at the Garrison base.

“Major, this is Devil Dawgs, can we get an updated Rules of Engagement, over?”

Major Myers came back to him rapidly, her voice edged with the brittleness of someone who is trying to juggle to many tasks at the same time.

"Sergeant, you are weapons free at this time but confirm your targets. This is a civilian facility filled with frightened people, many of them armed and I don't want any war crimes investigations landing on my desk when this is over."

As APC 1 filled up with dead and wounded Paulson hopped out to make room, Grabbing his incinerator as he went and spare bottle he jumped into a rear seat of APC 2 as the comms chattered the change in status.

He looked at his weapon of choice and wondered aloud, "i'll do my best but this thing isn't the best at minimal damage."
Strapping himself in he looked up to see Morse apparently satisfied at the change in ROE.

the civilians had all but disappeared in their panicked retreat of the area but civilians often did. A burst of heavy gunfire from some distance away focused Paulsons mind, he checked the fuel gauges and pressure valves of the incinerator, then reported in "Paulson strapped in ready to rumble"

Sykes heard the new ROE and nodded to himself. "Understood, Major. Okay, Marines, make sure we have somebody on the turrets. Let's get ready to rumble. Move out as soon as everyone is on board."

Henniger gave a comradely punch to Sokolova's shoulder paldron.

"Sok, take the turret on APC 2, I'll drive."
<Tag Lcpl. Sokolova>

He ran around the APC, jamming his m41 into the weapons mount on the dash. He lit the ignition and tossed his motion tracker back to Paulson.

"Stow that for me my man," he smiled ruefully and gave Paulson a wink.

He looked over at Morse and nodded. It was good to be working with his old squad leader, they'd chewed some dirt and dodged a lot of acid.
"Staff Sergeant, we got your six."
He keyed the command net on his helmet mic. "Devil Dawg Actual, Third Team mounted in Victor Two, green across the board."

Samantha 'charges' the gun and keeps her head on a swivel, doing a slow and complete 360 turn while looking up and all around to make sure no hostiles are coming their way. As soon as her squad is on board, she calls out; "Okay peoples, let's get rollin' to the garrison....look sharp!"

Switching over to talk to Sykes, Morse and the LT; she says; "This is Hall in APAC 3; we're ready to go.....you want us leading, in 'the drag' or in the middle?"

Paulson caught the motion Tracker, well almost, it bounced off his hand then the floor. "sorry" he chimed. then grabbed it with his foot before stowing it on the appropriate rack.

As Henniger gave her a gentle tap on the shoulder, she smiled and nodded, before adding in that Ukrainian accent, "As you wish. A little action finally for my coming back party, da? We will show them that we're not weak."

<Tag Henniger>

Taking the time to jump into the turret and get the box of munitions set up and ready to fire, she racks the first round into the chamber, preparing for the upcoming assault. Making sure all the appropriate measures were ready, including the swivel, she added, "Locked and loaded, sir! Let us give them a lead bath they deserve."

Taking the time to aim to the skies, she got her trigger finger ready on the gun for any UPPs that might rear their heads. Lastly, she added, "Paulson, if you see any coming, just say which direction, da?"

Sykes saw Lieutenant Harper approaching and he scooted over into the driver seat of APAC 1. "Sergeant Hall, take point. Morse, take middle. I've got tail end charlie." With the Lieutenant riding shotgun and McKenna on the turret, Sykes spun the wheel and hit the gas. He kept his eyes peeled as the convoy pulled out. "Call out visuals when you see them. Good hunting, Marines."

Henniger couldn't help but laugh at Paulson, his oldest and first real friend after being transferred in after his first unit in the grunt strike teams.

"Roger Sok, you're weapons free, might want to keep that long rifle handy for her Paulson."

<Tag 3rd Team>

He waited for Victor Three to pull around him and Sykes' Victor One then drove into the second position in line.

Paulson finished stowing the now slightly scruffy motion detector then worked on stowing weapons so he could pass them quickly and efficiently as people dismounted later.
"Paulson, if you see any coming, just say which direction, da?"
Paulson looked round the enclosed cabin, it was a fully armoured beast and he could definitely not see out.

He shrugged his shoulders and strapped back in, "sure i will yell if i spot anything from back here"

Rolling three APCs deep with fewer Marines in each than fingers on a hand was a bit of a gamble in its own way. They had a lot of firepower at their disposal, but did not have the numbers to back it up. In an ideal situation they would be going in with twelve Marines in each, having a full company strength at their back. They APCs allowed for great maneuver, but not for control. If they were lucky the overwhelming firepower would scare off whatever was in front of them, but inevitably the bugs did not care about that so much. They could very well swarm the APCs.

That would be a problem, but not one they'd have to consider yet.

"Henniger, don't be afraid to drive over some shit. This tank'll take it, and if they get between us n' the lead vehicle, I'm considering them hostile." Morse commented moving to the control chair. His eyes lingered over to the empty seats. He could not help but think without reinforcement this might now go well.

"Sokolova! Command says weapons free, so you set those guns fuckin' free. You see somethin' that don't look right or like it's with us and you erase it from existence."

Morse strapped into the chair, but with M56 Smartgun still attached. It was not incredibly comfortable but as the middle vehicle he did not have to actually do much navigating. He was just waiting for what he imagined might be a mess.

SGT Samantha Hall heard Sykes' order and replied; "Aye-aye"; and leaned down to talk to her squad/fire-team. "Okay Dmitri; take lead; move quick but not reckless....we don't wanna be gettin' away from de rest of de platoon now......Doc, you stay Frosty and keep a close eye outta window." That done, she kept her turret* doing slow 90 degree turns to the front right, front again, then front left and back.....letting the middle and rear vehicles keep an eye on the rear....

*OOC: apologies if it was already mentioned; but the turret is what exactly? I'm THINKING a pintle mounted version of the M56 Smartgun....but then again, maybe I'm way off?

Henniger nodded, "Roger, five-by."

<tag Morse>

He pulled into formation. He'd run insurgent ground convoy operations out on the Rim before his keelhaul into The Dawgs. No locals got between vehicles was the cardinal rule, always. A bash to the right spot or a couple rounds from the top-mount gun would usually provide a comical (for the Marines) and quick exit of the offending vehicle.

Now, that might seem excessive, even flippant to anyone who hasn't run a convoy or mounted patrol on a planet whose population isn't above driving a bomb into UAC forces. But to those who's survived just such incidents, it was as commonplace a practice as slapping girlie mags up in a locker.
