For what it's worth, the Leading Edge RPG had ammo of 14 for the "Pistol" (only 1 choice.....the picture they use is the VP 70), 96 for the Pulse Rifle, 192 for the Machinegun (the Smartgun...it is interesting to note that NOWHERE in the shooting script or in the movie, even the extended version, do they EVER call it a Smartgun....I've always been curious where that came from), 48 for the SMG, 16 for the Sniper Rifle and 8 for the shotgun....

Personally, I think 192 or 200 makes a LOT more sense for the small drum the Smartgun uses as opposed to the 300 I see cited a lot and if we're talking the Ithaca Stakeout that Hicks carries, 5 shells makes more sense than 8...but these are small quibbles.....

Samantha Hall would typically have a load out like this:

M41 Pulse Rifle w 4 total mags (including 1 in the gun at all time)
Shotgun w/ 8 (or 5) shells loaded and a spare 16 (or 20) in pockets/bandoleers, etc.
8 total grenades, 4 loaded in Pulse Rifle, 4 on bandoleers/pockets including 4 standard, 2 'buckshot', 2 stun/stingball
Combat knife

Sam, I was using the listed amounts in the player's guide and was corrected by some of the more senior members on the numbers. Just trying to make things easier for the new folks and the GMs

Strand here sarge. Gonna be carrying along a SMG with 2 spare mags,
4 frag grenades,
Bringing along a flame unit as a back up with a spare mag.
1 set of Medical supplies, figuring we would keep the big bag on the "bus" unless we really need it.
And sarge if we happen to have a spare motion tracker around that would be awesome.
And one last question about the medical supplies....Do they make stuff that neutralizes Xeno's acid? Or is it not created yet/too expensive?

Apparently the Name was coined by Simon Atherton, the armorer that built the original props used by Vasquez and Drake. His notes were referenced by the authors of the Colonial Marines Technical Manual and it's been the M56 Smartgun ever since. As side note, according to the CMTM, The M56 has 500rnd drum magazine. I know the drum on the prop looks a little small but then, the Pulse Rifle magazines don't look like they hold 95 10mm rifle rounds either, cos their actually dressed up M1 Thompson 20rnd stick mags.

Here's Kelly's loadout for the next Op:
M-41A Pulse Rifle w/ 4 Mags
M4A3 Pistol w/ 2 Mags
K-52 Field Medical Pack
2x M-18 Smoke Grenades (Red)
6x M-94 Flares
2x K-Bar Combat/Survival Knives

Oh gotcha, I never meant to imply anything, sorry if that came across wrong.....I just thought I'd throw out some stuff from the Leading Edge RPG book....

That's interesting to know that the Smartgun name came from the movie armorer.....I knew all about the Pulse Rifle being made from a Thompson and a Remington shotgun combined (in some scenes you can see the .45 shells flying out of the "careless" weapon :) ), I also knew the M56 is an old German MG42 or 34 with a 50 round drum (real life capacity)......I did NOT know the armorer came up wit the name...

I've always had issues with the Tech Manual......the idea of the 4 man squad being split into a 2 man "gun team" with a Rifleman and a Smargunner and the "rifle" team with the other 2 members of the squad sounds nice and neat....but it's not backed up by what's seen on film. Apone leads a 5 and occasionally 6 man section that has no other real leader (Dietrich the medic/corpsman is listed as a CPL, but shows no command ability in the movie) while Hicks spends a good chunk of the movie with just 2 other marines; Drake and Frost.

Also, I never liked the Energy weapon sections (I know the cut scene with Hudson talking about them....but I don't like them in my "head cannon" of the Aliens universe.....just my take).....and even the 99 rounds in the Pulse Rifle doesn't make much sense....I actually prefer the Leading Edge 96 round magazine that can easily be explained as only loading to 95 rounds to cut down on jams (happens a lot with many real world weapons throughout history)....

Anyway, carry on with the good work!

Also, with regards to the squads in the movie Aliens:

1st
Sgt. Apone - Squad Leader
PFC. Vasquez - smartgunner
PFC. Hudson - ComTech
Pvt. Crowe - Rifleman
Pvt. Wierzbowski - Rifleman

2nd
Cpl. Hicks - Squad Leader
Pvt. Drake - smartgunner
Pvt. Frost - Rifleman
Pvt. Dietrich - Medic/Corpsman

When the Marines in the movie do their sweep, they split into two squads. When 1st squad reaches a 3 way intersection, Apone snaps his fingers and issues hand signs. Apone and Wierzbowski go left, Crowe goes right, while Hudson and Vasquez proceed forward toward the camera. Sorry, seen that movie way too many times.

Me too.....it's just that the way the Colonial Marine Handbook breaks it down....it just never really works that way in the movie.....by the Handbook, Apone is the overall Field Leader, but each squad would have its own leader (like Hicks leads his 3 man team of him, Frost and Drake when they find Newt)....but in the actual movie, Apone, as you say, leads a 5 man (possibly 6....Dietrich 'floats' around...she's never really with Hicks specifically) unit.....

As I've long maintained, to me, the Colonial Marines act closer to Vietnam era Army soldiers than Marines....I also find it very interesting that there everyone in the movie, with the exception of Apone and Gorman; are either Corporals (Hicks, Ferro, Dietrich) or Privates (either PFCs like Hudson and Vaz or just PVTs like Crowe, Wierzbowski, Drake, Frost and Spunkmeyer....I THINK Spunkmeyer is a PVT anyway...but if he's not, then he's a PFC).....and all of the actors are in thier mid 20s at least....implying they've been in the Corps for awhile.

My own 'head cannon' has the USCM as working something like this for enlisted marines: (Rank and typical time in grade)

E1: Recruit: Approximately 6 months....boot camp, "A" school, shipping out to first assignment
E2: Private: Approximately 4.5 years
E3: PFC: Approximately 5 years
E4: Corporal: Approximately 5 years
E5: SGT: Approximately 5 years
E6: Staff SGT/Platoon SGT (I kinda like the latter....Apone is this rank and this could explain why he's still called "Sarge" vice "Staff"): Approximately 5 years
E7: Gunnery SGT: Approximately 5 years
E8: First SGT: No average time......only the best of the best make it to the final rank
E9: SGT Major/Master Gunnery SGT: which rank depends on which job is taken

I like this chart because no one in the movie is a Lance Corporal or Specialist or any other 'typical' E3 rank in usage from the late 20th century on in either the USMC or U.S. Army.....and while sure, the unit could just happen to have a lot of E2s and E4s.....it still seems odd. Also, the longer time in each grade helps to explain why guys that are 24-28 are still Privates and PFCs and a guy at about 30 (Hicks) is a Corporal instead of an E6 or E7 and Apone, in his early 40s is an E6 vice an E8.

Anyway....just my two cents....

Last thing: I know in the working script, the idea was that Vaz and Drake were so tight because they had both been serving time at the same prison and were given the chance to commute thier sentence by instead serving with the Colonial Marines. I REALLY wish they had thrown some lines using this background into the movie as I think it makes PERFECT sense for the way they interact.....

Ahem...yeah, probably like most/all of the people on these boards, I've spent WAY too much time watching this movie as well! :)
