Turn 16: Tight Spaces

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sun Aug 02, 2020 9:42 pm

The dark, claustrophobic corridors of engineering were more than a little wearing on the nerves of the Marines. However, they reached the elevator without any trouble at all, and on top of that, it seemed to be in working order. The Marines quickly established a perimeter while the Sergeants discussed the situation. The elevator would hold a maximum of ten people and they currently numbered seventeen.

It was decided that Morse would go first along with Second Squad, Knight, and four civilians. They packed into the elevator and one of the bridge crew selected the floor that would lead to the hangar bay.

The elevator was of a sturdy, air-tight construction, considering it was able to be taken up to the surface of the station. The walls were unadorned steel with a small touchscreen control pad. They hardly felt anything as the elevator descended five floors to the ground level. Then the floor shook as it struck something. The powerful motor tried to push past the obstacle and ground against the warped walls of the elevator shaft before sticking hopelessly. The civilian clicked a number of keys on the control pad, but nothing happened beyond the sound of grinding gears. They were stuck.
(Actions)

(OOC: I got the “marching order” from Morse so that I was unbiased in who got stuck in the elevator. I rolled latent awareness rolls for everyone to prevent slowdown. If you do not receive a message from me, then you didn't roll well enough to learn anything new.)

Paulson heard a large grating sound of metal on metal then the screech of motor trying desperately to do their job, before finally a louder crash and then nothing, this did not bode well for those in the elevator as the sounds had all come from behind the doors and lower down.
Paulson looked around and saw a door marked access strictly no entry to non authorized personnel. "entry here Corporal" Paulson reported as he started to open the door.
inside was a ladder that ran up the side edge of the elevator shaft paulson scanned with his motion detector which showed nothing before risking a look up then finally down. his shoulder lamp shone out ahead but reviled nothing.
the shaft was well lit and had a slight smoke haze probably from the fires and explosions that could still be heard from above.
Paulson pulled his head back into the corridor " ladder going down to the bottom, no movement currently, i think i can see the carriage but not what the issue is" paulson reported back to Quinn.
<roll awarness >
<roll motion detector>
Paulson moved to get a better look and found to what appeared to be assisted gravity suits near the access hatch but tucked out of initial view these where usually stored properly near areas with zero gravity what they were doing here he did not know, Paulson again reported the find to Quinn.

As the last of the traumatized civilians disembark into one of the cargo airlocks of the 'Higgins' the pilot, Lance Corporal Marcus "Dizzy" Riggs, cycled the doors and docking clamps on the Marine dropship.
['Crazyhorse' to Flight Control. I have enough fuel for another dust off. Returning to Gaia to pick up the Marine detachment in the Engineering section.]

He waited for all green before hitting the manuevering thrusters to "lift off" the 'Higgins' hull and with a small burn from main engines had his craft pulling away. He rotated to align for the engineering section and again hit main engine burn for several seconds to put his ship inbound and brought up active scanners to check on Gaia station's integrity.

<Roll for sensors>

While the scan gained resolution "Dizzy" switched over to the Devil Dawg's frequency and listened in on their chatter while he brought the drop ship in closer.

Henniger sagged against the bulkhead behind Paulson, Knight let him rest. He watched his squad mate pull his tracker up and switch his attention between it and the shaft access he's located. Henniger's leg was aching again. He clamped a cigarette down in his mouth and chewed on the filter to try and catch the pain and not speak. He pulled his lighter from a belt pouch on his harness and took a deep drag.
Blowing out the cloud he felt a lot better. Nicotine was a vaso dilator and while the swelling in his leg was preventing further bleeding, it made the thing hurt like hell. He felt his bandage dampen and didn't care. It felt better.
He finished his smoke and shouldered his carbine. He tapped the IR toggle release inside his helmet rim and the lens dropped down over his right eye. He remained slumped against the bulkhead and pulled security, covering Paulson's six, scanning the murky darkness of the ceilings and area behind the squad.

Samantha just closed her eyes for a moment, put her head down and shook it for a second as the elevator stopped.....of COURSE it would get stuck NOW.....Murphy's Law never failed....

Sighing, she looked up and all around and then seeing something, she cocked her head for a second and saw the outlines of....yep...a HATCH on the ceiling. "Hey Morse, look mon", she said to the senior NCO present as she pointed out the hatch. She knew she wasn't a particularly skilled mechanic or technician so she looked at the four civilians and asked, "Any chance any of you are good with fixing mechanical problems?" she asked with hope her voice...

Isabel heard the screeching sound from down below and watched as Paulson popped an access panel looking up and down. She parred Heninger on the shoulder"We'll get through this" she said with a small smile on her face. She turned to their squad leader, "Quinn, do you want me to climb down the elevator shaft and see if they are okay?" She looked down the access panel trying to judge the distance and see if she could spot any access hatches or ventilation ducts that might harbor the creatures. She searched around to see if she could locate any rope or material to rig up a harness.

Henniger nodded at his squad mate. That simple gesture meant the world to him at that moment. He felt the cold sweat beading on his face and knew he was pale beneath the rim his issue helmet at his brow line.

"Thanks Orozco." He meant it.

He felt simultaneously heartened and shamed. Heartened that he was part of this platoon, that he seemed to be accepted during this operation. Shamed that he was the weak link. His last platoon had taken much more time to prove himself. His last outfit hadn't seen this kind of action however. They had fought pirates and Corporate mercs, even some deranged colonists once. He silently steeled his resolve to not let his comrades down.

Sergeant Major Sykes gritted his teeth with frustration as the elevator jammed. He wanted to get off of this fucking space station. The whole mission was FUBAR but he tried to remember that they had succeeded in covering for thousands of civilians.

Watching Quinn waver and hesitate, Sykes immediately stepped into command. “Paulson, Orozco, get down there and see if you can help them. Don’t be heroes and get yourselves killed.” He knew this last order was probably useless. After all, what would he do with squad mates trapped and a chance to get them out? In fact, Sykes had to force down his desire to jump on the ladder and wade into the situation. But he had to remind himself that it wasn’t his role anymore.
<Tag Paulson, Orozco>

“Quinn, Henniger, we’re covering their tails. Eyes open and be ready to move. Civilians, stay there against the wall. Don’t get in the way.” He knew that Quinn had led a platoon in the past but had been demoted for some redacted choices he had made. Sykes knew exactly what had happened and had agreed with those choices. But it was clear that Quinn was not ready for a return to command. Sykes would have to take vicarious command of First Squad until they could get Morse back in the picture.

Henniger nodded and brought his pulse rifle to his shoulder.

"Check Sarge."

<tag Sykes>

He scanned his sector as diligently as possible, varying the pattern his eyes used to cover the area. He swapped his IR lens out and re-deployed it every minute to keep a sharp focus.

Paulson heard the order on jumped to obey, "going through hatch Aye sir." he responded before doing just that. Paulson checked the motion detector again before going through then let i hang to his side he would be able to hear it if not see it should anything decide to move in these smaller spaces. the room in the lift shaft was enough to move easily but still felt restricted holding onto the ladder.
paulson lit a flare and dropped it and although it stopped with a bang five floors down he could still not see what was blocking the lifts. shouldering his weapon he quietly descended the ladder towards the stricken squad two.
"access way currently clear descending." he reported back.

"No problem Heninger, we're all in this together after all." Isabel responded as she returned to the access hatch. "On it Sykes" She pulled a length of rope out of her pack and two large carabiners. She hooked one of the carabiners on to her belt. "I appreciate having a second lifeline given that this station seems to be falling apart all around us." She tied the rope off onto a large metal pipe inside the shaft, splaying the rest of the rope down the elevator shaft. She pulled the rope close to her and ran it through her carabiner spinning the lock down into place. She took the second carabiner and wound it through the rope sliding it down to Paulson. "Hook this onto your belt and spin the lock down so the carabiner doesn't come open."

Isabel pulled her rifle in close to her body and began the descent after looking below and around her for any creature hiding places. Here goes she thought to herself.

Morse groaned along with everyone else when the elevator was stuck. This was what happened when you fought in space. Machinery broke, air gave out, gravity fluctuated, and people got sucked out into emptiness. Only a few of those things had happened so far, but of course there was always time for the rest of it. Every second they were still on the ship, was just another moment of misery in a setting that tended to just get people killed.

"Elevator stuck." Morse called down to Sykes and the remaining personnel that were not on the elevator. They probably heard the groaning metal, and Morse was in the lull from his adrenaline fading after the fire fight. They just needed out, and from where he was standing there did not appear to be a good way to do that.

<Tag Sykes

Fortunately there was Sam who seemed to notice something right away that Morse did not see. Morse was not so skilled on the technical expertise side, so he had not even noticed the outline of the hatch to get out of the elevator. But they needed someone to get eyes up there and see either if they could get the thing fixed or find a ladder. The ladder would not be ideal, but if they were left with no other choice it would be what they'd go with.

"Sam. You got the eyes, n' maybe you'll see what we need up." Morse mentioned to her. "We'll give ya a boost up there, n' I need you to look for a ladder or a way to fix this thing. If repairs'r gonna take anythin' lookin' like way too long, we may gotta climb out, but we can't stay stuck, so your up."

<Tag Sam

Morse looked at the others in the elevator. "Ya'll help us git her up, n' any a you civies what may know anything technical are goin' up to."

Paulson attached himself to the rope and then continued cautiously down scanning around everywhere he could see as he descended, this looked liked a hell of a place to get ambushed.
<roll awareness>
as nothing yet leapt out at him, slowly but surely paulson headed down to the stuck elevator below trying to see what it had become wedged on and to find another hatch out of this elevator shaft just in case they needed it.

"Dizzy" fired several shots from his forward thrusters, careful to conserve propellant for when it'll really be needed to slow 'Crazyhorse' as he brought the Marine dropship over the Engineering section of Gaia station. He refocused his scan where he detected the Marine's comm transponders and did a heavy active ping to give him penetrating sensor sweep of the station interior to get as much information on the platoon's status.

<Roll for sensor scan>

"Dizzy" rubbed his thumb over the flight stick as he listened on the Marine squad frequency for the Devil Dawg's and clicked his tongue in frustration. He switched his radio back to the 'Higgins' Flight Command to give the Navy big shots a sit rep,

['Crazyhorse' reporting Marines trapped with civilians in an elevator shaft in Engineering. Preforming deep scan to ascertain situation and head count of survivors. Will remain on station as long as fuel holds and extract Marines and civies when it is viable. 'Crazyhorse' out]

"Dizzy" switched back to the Marine's command frequency and decided to make his presence felt,

[Devil Dawgs ,this is 'Crazyhorse' actual. Holding station at Engineering and putting my Marine dropship's sensors and resources at your disposal. Advise sectors for deep scans to get your people safely to any airlock or docking bay for extraction. 'Higgins' command has been appraised of your situation and you won't be stranded. 'Crazyhorse' now begins Overwatch, my eyes and teeth are at your beck and call.]

Henniger heard the Cheyenne pilot's voice crackle over his earpiece. Well their ride was on station, now if they could free the squad in the elevator they could dust off this hulk.
