Mission 3 Turn 3: Showdown

Post by Corporal Hicks » Thu Nov 21, 2019 9:36 pm

The humans were totally overawed by the terrible size of the reptile that had just appeared in their camp. There was no time for hesitation, and the marines and sailors leapt into action. Several rifles and side-arms peppered the lizard as it seemingly readied itself for another spring. It began to move forward at a terrifying pace through the wreckage of tents and bodies. Mark Giosso had wisely grabbed the transmitter out of its path, and he tried escape in the slow yellow power loader. Fortunately for him, the lizard was not targeting him. A swipe of its arm struck the power suit and tossed it down face first. The transmitter rolled away and the forklift arms sank into the swampy ground. Mark found himself lying on the protective cage, staring into the muck a meter below him. (A few unsuccessful rolls)

The driver of the buggy tried to swerve out of the way, but his right wheel struck a metal crate and the vehicle sort of jumped. The driver slammed on the accelerator as soon as it struck the ground and the vehicle skidded right in front of the advancing monster. Allen Morse opened fire with the machine gun turret straight into its face, and its sleek scaly features were marred by red bullet holes. It snapped angrily at the buggy, but the vehicle was already moving out of its range. Morse had come within three meters of being dinner. (Roll successful)

The hideous and now one-eyed beast continued toward its original target: the APCs that were picking up the wounded. Corporal Hall had cried out that the APC guns should be activated, and they were, but it was too late. As the plasma turrets opened fire, the great lizard crunched one of the APCs in its jaws. Lifting the massive vehicle, it shook it left and right, hindered by the great weight of the metal. Two or three humans fell from the open door as it jerked its terrible head back and forth, its massive neck muscles working overtime. Fortunately for them, Perez, Hall, Barayev, and Sokolova were in the other APC and were not the ones being shaken to death.

The tank opened fire. The heavy rounds punched holes in the side of the creature, one every second. As they pierced the flesh, they exploded in its vitals. The APC fell out of its mouth and its whole body shook as the explosions rippled across its flesh. Its brown scales fell or flew off from the shock waves, and its mouth uttered a sound unlike anything they had ever heard. Shell after shell penetrated the giant lizard’s body until it fell, the last few shells rolling it over onto its back. (Roll critical success)

As the tank ran dry, all sound died away, leaving them with a surreal experience. The massive carcass lay still, its abdomen was a gaping hole of gore and splintered ribs. It looked like a gutted whale on a beach. Its legs still twitched for a few minutes before stopping completely. The lizard was dead. They did not know what it had felt, or whether it knew it was dying. It had very likely never known fear, but it had met its match with the Colonial Marine Corps.

Her heart pounding, Sokolova continued to pour in the rounds while the oversized Komodo dragon was headed toward them. Adrenaline kicking in, she only breathed a sigh of relief once the monster was not coming directly onto their APC, but only heightened once again after she saw it going after the other APC. It was soon after watching the thing destroy the other APC to shreds that she heard the whistling of the shells firing into the beast and the awful wail coming that she stopped firing for a moment, watching the thing plummet to its demise. Humans would have to fight for being the Apex predator in this land it would seem.

Keeping her gun's sights at eye level just in case the beast tried to move again, she finally let out a long sigh. "It is about time that bastard fell," She murmured in her Ukrainian accent to break the dead silence before looking back toward the rest of the passengers in the APC.

Paulson's unfamiliarity with the pintle mounted weapon had shown, first he had not loaded it correctly then his aim had been terrible. slightly hindered from being on a moving vehicle he had only just managed to score a few hits when the great beast tumbled to the ground.
now he lept from the top of the vehicle and ran towards those spewn from the stricken APC to see if he could render any assistance.
the first person he found was beyond help, a naval rating his head a bloody mush, whether from previous injury worsened or fresh now Paulson could not tell, he no vital signs and others might be in more pressing need he quickly moved on after taking note of the mans name.

"Everyone okay?" Dmitri asked, eyeballing everyone on the APC with him. Damn, but Morse was one badassed motherfucker on the gun. Dmitri coughed a laugh, shaking his head.

As long as someone's shooting, it's all good ...

While anyone might have manned the gun and managed to kill the monster, Dmitri had to admit that Morse would have been his first choice. That man just LOVED lighting shit up.

This is how it is going to end. Mark thought as he felt the thudding feet of the massive creature and heard the resonating boom of the high explosive tank shells. Godzilla is either going to step on me. Another tank round exploded behind him. Or they'll finally kill it, and I'm going to be crushed under its weight. The earth shook and raddled him around the harness as the dead weight of the creature collapsed to the ground. or I could survive. Mark blinked a few times, then laughed quietly to himself. He'd survived.

The powerlifter was still running, but a few quick attempts with the controls quickly confirmed that Mark's attempt to catch his fall with his hands had buried the load arms so deep into the mud there was no way for the machine to pull itself out under its own power. Still, to believe to be particularly frustrated by the development, Mark shut the machine down and locked everything back into the off position. Unless they could manage to get a tow cable around this thing's torso and pull it back upright, this machine was destined to become yet another sinking piece of scrap.

Of course, Mark still had to get himself out. The tech unclipped his harness on the count of three and, exactly as he'd expected, slammed down onto the metal safety cage. After expressing the momentary instance of pain, Mark squirmed and slid his hands through the sides of the cage, reaching around for some kind of anchorage he could use to pull on. His hand finally found purchase on the edge of the machine and he strugglingly hauled himself out.

Looking around exhausted, his eyes settled again on the monstrous creature. It somehow, impossibly, seemed even larger now. It had died mid-settlement, and its humungous body was sprawled across the camp including, Mark saw, right where he and the transmitter had been moments earlier. The thought startled him out of his rest. The transmitter! He rushed as best as he could across the mud and to where the transmitter had rolled after it had flown out of the load lifter's hands. The Armed Forces made everything rugged - there was a chance it might still be operational - or at least repairable.

Samantha Hall allowed herself a moment to close her eyes, take a deep breath of relief and relax from the massive adrenaline surge being chased by a lizard only SLIGHTLY smaller than a city causes in a person....

Then she snapped her eyes back open and called out to the driver; "Okay, mon, get us back to where dat udder APC was dropped....we need to see if anybody is still alive and in a bad way. Move, move, move!"

For the first time noticing some of the others in the APC besides Perez, she spotted Dmitri...."Dmitri! It's been ages mon! It's good to see a familiar face!"

The beast was dead. That was a welcome surprise. In a way Morse had thought it may rip them to pieces before they could rally their defense. Had it gotten jaws or claws on the APC it could very well have flipped it over. Fortunately it had only done its initial obvious damage. There was now the scent of blood and masses sitting in the center of what was their camp. They were hauled over hot coals once again and the marines had prevailed, with superior firepower and ingenuity. This was what millions of years of human evolution had led to, pure dominance over the stars, and it would continue on forever.

The buggy came back around towards the camp, Morse unable to tell what damage, if any he had done. There was blood and holes where he'd fired on it, but he couldn't call the kill his with the gaping mass of a torso ripped apart.

Morse just knew it was time for directives.

"Find the fallen' n' get em wrapped up." Morse ordered over the com and to any around. "Start salvaging the equipment n' get ready for rollin'. Gotta put this shit back together n' get back to business. Maybe see what dead chunkasaur tastes like... ROBOT!" Morse called out derogatorily to the synthetic in his adrenal state. "Do a scan n' figure out if we got a new food source right there."

Morse twisted back around "Hall n' Giosso... check around to see if any of our tech shit survived outside a the damn APCs" Morse said. He hopped off of the buggy turret, which was his post.

He assumed it was appropriate to say something for their victory.

"That was good killin' marines! Keep it up n' we may get outa this shit hole yet."

"Good to see you, too!" Dmitri managed to say that much and slapped his old team mate on her shoulder and gripped her hand in a strong claasp of welcome. More than that, no one had the time for. "We got orders. Let's get moving."

The unharmed marines and sailors swarmed to find the wounded and dead. The battered APC lay still, with barely a physical mark but it was smoking slightly. Around it we’re strewn a number of bodies. Paulson knelt by an injured man and gave him his canteen to drink from. The man’s leg appeared to be in bad shape and Paulson did was little he could with adequacy. His name was stenciled on his uniform, “Pickett” (Decent rolls)

Hall knelt by a broken form, one of the previously wounded who had been loaded up for protection. He appeared to have fallen on his head which oozed blood, and he was unresponsive. His torn uniform read “Emerson”

Tanya too knelt by a body, some poor soul who had been crushed by the APC when it fell. Only the legs were visible. (Couple of bad rolls)

The driver of the unlucky APC stumbled out, Sergeant Lulu Hoops. She was bruised but not badly hurt. Another five people lay strewn about in various states of health.

While only two had died at the APC, the rest of camp had suffered as well. The stampede had injured a number of people, very few had survived without a bruise. As they went about the task, they found four dead among the debris. They had been trampled or just thrown to their deaths. A quick check of the East recon position revealed that Chip Austin had apparently been devoured by the lizard before it entered the camp.

As devastating as the injuries was the complete destruction of their temporary home. Not a tent still stood, food, equipment, tables, chairs and seemingly everything else was scattered, busted, splintered or ruined. They had a lot of clean up to do and not many healthy people to do it.

Preacher the synthetic looked nervously at Morse. “I am very sorry, but I must not go against my prime directive. It is impossible for me to harm, or by omission of action allow to be harmed a human being. When I am confident that human lives are not in danger, I will carry out your orders, Staff Sergeant.”
<Tag Morse>

Mark Giosso extricated himself from the power loader and ran to the transmitter. As he investigated it, he saw that it was a little dented and muddy but still functioning. (Good roll!)

When the beast finally fell, Sixtus put several more shells into the thing for good measure, the last one a carefully aimed shot right into the thing’s head. He sat back, the adrenaline finally getting the better of him. His hands were trembling for a moment, then calmed after several deep breaths. He popped the hatch to survey his latest accomplishment, before a memory struck him.

He scrambled out of the tank, rolling off with a painful jolt onto the ground. He barely felt the pain of his leg through the adrenaline boost. He started digging through the carcass, looking for the stomach analogue. The possibility of the Lieutenant having survived the ordeal was minimal, but he had encountered stranger occurrences in his career. Upon finding what had served as the beast’s stomach, Sixtus removed his knife and began cutting through the organ. She had only been in there a few minutes, so she might be alive, if the tank shells hadn’t killed her outright.

Praise be to the robustness of military tech. Mark thought to himself as he wiped the worst of the mud off of the transmitter’s casing. He had feared the worst when the unit had slipped out of his grasp during that attack, but it seemed that their fickle fortune had spared them that particular tragedy. Struggling, he lifted the unit up and was stashing it on the back of the fallen load lifter for safe keeping when Morse began calling out orders.

“Already on it.” Mark replied, “and good news – the transmitter is still useable. I’ll let you know what else I find.”

With the transmitter safe, the marine started off in the direction of the APCs and, not coincidently, the majority of the surviving personnel. He waved when he spied Sam among the crowd, then pointed in the direction of the perimeter unit that was next on his mental ‘things to check out’ list.

As Quinn cut into the beast, he successfully found the stomach. As he cut it open he almost vomited from the stench that it emitted. With his rebreather he was able to stomach the smell long enough to find the grisly remains of two humans. The young blonde Private Austin and the pretty black haired Lieutenant Davenport. Both were killed, if not by being devoured then by the shock of the explosions. At least their bodies could now be buried, for all the good that would do on this planet.

The perimeter unit appeared to be functioning as well. The sentry gun feed was visible on the screen.
