Mission 1 Turn 5: Wreckage

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sat Aug 17, 2019 2:59 pm

The marines stared in shock at the writhing in the water. They didn’t know that Grisham was within arms reach of being saved. Fortunately for him, there was a synthetic with the marines. Preacher acted immediately without consideration and without interest in self-preservation. Diving in, he struck rapidly at the creature’s head with incredible speed and force. In a matter of 1.2 seconds he discovered the knife and evaluated the state of the creature as being in its death throes. He simultaneously calculated the odds that Grisham was running out of air or more likely already breathing in water. He weighed his options in 0.2 seconds and he placed his hands on the top and bottom of the creature’s jaw. Exerting all his force, he pried open the death-grip that held poor Grisham’s leg.

The amphibian sank down to the bottom of the pool, too tired to fight on. Preacher pulled Grisham to shore where he coughed and sputtered. His tattered pant-leg was soaked red with blood but it was still attached to him. Quinn had a similar injury. There was a lot of blood, but the wounds were primarily superficial. The teeth of the amphibians were not designed to maim, just to hold the prey until it drowned. While nobody had died, the marines felt that this planet may have many other dangers for them before it was all done.

Some of the marines advanced toward the wreckage. Chunks of metal gouged the earth and the trees on one side had been torn to splinters where it had impacted. In this debris field was possibly some salvageable gear. Looking at the huge mass of metal, they saw one door hatch that was slightly warped out of shape. The rim around the door was painted red and above it was a shattered claxon. The door didn’t open when approached, but there might be a way it could be breached.

There being no shortage of scrap metal lying around, Dmitri picked up a longish piece of ... something ... to use as a crowbar on that hatch. He held it aloft to get it clear of the muck and vegetation.

"Sarge," he said to Morse. "This might do the trick."

"anyone know what this red rim means?" "just in case we should not open it" Paulson wondered out loud.

Huh.

Red.

It usually meant danger. Yeah, that gave Dmitri pause. He planted the makeshift crowbar in the dirt and leaned on it. He'd wait for orders to use it.

<TAG: Anyone who knows what that red means.>

"It just means that the door is airtight...but I'm much less concerned with that than what's above it. Even if that thing is shattered it's still possible the alarm is still operable, and loud as shit. Do we want to risk alerting every single lizard in a mile that we are here?"

with confirmation that the door was safe ish to open Paulson lent his weight to the crow bar effort, they stopped again as someone mentioned the klaxon, surely it would not function, but just in case maybe they should remove or unwire it before they open the hatch.
"can anyone re route this alarm?" Paulson questioned.
"or maybe just remove it with the crowbar? no speaker no sound?"

"Coming right up." Dmitri swung the metal bar around like he meant to hit the speaker out of the ball park.

<TAG: GM--do I need to roll for this? It's not like the speaker can dodge out of the way, right?>

The fact that everyone survived was one of those unusual miracles, that had no real reason to it. While on one world a single bite from a creature that size would rend your flesh from bone and take a leg with it, some worlds had creatures that were adapted for a different form of killing. And the invaders that humans were, were adapted for many forms of killing. Killing for survival. Killing for fun. Killing by accident. And they brought all sorts of tools to do it... even a robot... which was more then enough to suss things out some times. There was a breath that was taken following the encounter and they progressed immediately.

The marines had made it to some of the wreckage. And while not perfect, it certainly was better then sitting out in the open indefinitely.

"Crack that shit open." Morse had directed, which Dmitri followed up by grabbing a large piece of metal ready to get to work.

But there was then commentary regarding the color of the door, and the potential of the alarm above it.

"If that alarm goes off, it'll either scare off anythin' in the area... or bring it in for a firing squad."

Morse looked at the others standing there. "We're the apex predators of the goddamn galaxy, and we just found a new stomping ground!" Morse actually believed this commentary. Even as dangerous as other creatures may have been, humanity always won out in the end... even the Xenos perished in the fires of nuclear weapons... and humans didn't even have to set foot on a world to send them.

"Crack that alarm, get that door open, n' lets get inside n' figure what we got on this shit rock."

Morse's direction was clear, and he turned to look at the landscape and wreckage to see exactly what they might be dealing with.

Fernandez listened to Morse order the cracking of the alarm and continuation of the door prying, he only showed a moment of disappointment for the recklessness of his squad but corrected his resolve and raised his pistol to the alarm. Fernandez closed an eye and tried his best to locate the wiring through the cracked hull of the alarm.
