CHAPTER 3 - A Brave New World

Post by JuanPerez » Sat Jan 05, 2019 11:25 pm

June 7, 2189
Location: Outer Veil, Neroid Sector, USS Heimlich, Fiorina 161 Standard Orbit
Mission Time: 06:08:21
End-Of-Turn: 19.01.2019

While approaching, three attempts to contact the USS Jester (USCM Starslip-class vessel, that brought in the USCM recon team and sent out a distress call) were made, three times futile. Passive scans didn't show a blip. For fear of detection, Lt. Harper did not authorize active radar pings yet. Although the Dawgs were experienced and battle-hardened soldiers, the typical growth of tension could be sensed all over the ship, growing every minute, that they came closer to Fury 161. Finally, the USS Heimlich enters standard orbit eight minutes later, than calculated. As soon as orbit is established, several stealth recon drones are launched, en route to the former prison colony. Lt. Harper awaites the results eagerly.

<GM-Note: Please post, what your character does for preparation. Your char knows about everything above, e.g. the three futile attemps to contact the Jester and in the following section all available data about fury 161 is listed. I will update about the intel results in round about 3 to 4 days>

available INTEL about Fiorina 161
Fiorina 161, nicknamed "Fury", is a barren, windswept world in the Neroid Sector, orbiting around a binary star system. The planet's location is 19.8 light years from Earth, just outside the border of the Galactic Nucleus.

Terrain and Climate
Fiorina 161's surface is barren, rocky and brownish-gray, much like the similarly bleak LV-426. The planet experiences extreme temperatures which range between 40°C in daylight to -20°C at night. The planet's atmosphere is breathable to humans, and it possesses ample liquid surface water in the form of large oceans. However, these water bodies were dark, oily and acidic in nature. Fiorina 161, due to its flat terrain, has severe howling winds, which worsen the temperatures felt on the planet and often carried stinging rain. The sky of Fiorina 161 is not clear, but rather cloudy and hazy gray.

Flora and Fauna
The soil on the planet's crust is rocky and thin, and as a result of this, combined with the planet's extreme seasons, very few plants grew on Fiorina 161. The few that grow in between the black rocks are small, twisted, frail and brittle in nature. It wad entirely plausible that no crops could be grown on Fiorina 161.

Fiorina is home to several indigenous species, although none of these lifeforms are particularly advanced. Several species of fish-like organisms live in the planet's oceans, while the land masses supported a genus of slow, primitive ground-dwelling animal.By far the most widespread organisms on the planet are its swarms of insects, some of which are carnivorous and can even threaten humans under certain circumstances. There is a particular problem with tiny, parasitic, lice-like arthropods that fed voraciously on the keratin in hair, but curiously not fingernails, and, as a result, all human inhabitants were forced to continually shave their heads and bodies. The planet is also home to several species of algae, moss and primitive salt grass.

Establishments
Due to the planet's intense climate, large oceanic coverage and arid, desert-covered landscape, Fiorina 161 was perfect for industrial facilities. Fiorina 161 was only known for its two establishments, an industrial lead-smelting works and a double-Y syndrome work correctional facility, both owned by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. After these were closed down, they were kept operational by a small inmate skeleton crew who chose to stay behind. As a result of its prior industrialization, the planet is littered with abandoned and derelict industrial structures.

The Fiorina 161 Class C Work Correctional Unit (reg. 12037154) at one point maintained thousands of double-Y syndrome maximum risk prisoners, but in 2179 supported twenty-two inmates and three custodians. Because of the extreme weather conditions and drastically fluctuating surface temperatures, the inmates and custodians would stay in the foundry facility which was partly underground. The Correctional Unit on Fiorina 161 maintained an active lead works prior to the dissolution of its prisoner population. A morgue, mess and infirmary were amongst the few facilities available in the compound. The compound is almost ten square miles in diameter, with a total of approximately 600 active and inactive ventilation ducts.

Danny Sykes looked at his flamethrower, and decided it was probably not the best choice for this mission. He wanted the range and accuracy of the pulse rifle. He packed 8 grenades and 8 buckshot rounds that could be fired from the grenade-launcher attachment. He tucked his combat knife snugly into his boot.

"Okay, people, listen up!" barked Sykes to get the others' attention. "As for loadouts, you get the final say. But if you haven't read the report, I suggest you do. It can get real cold down there, so I want everyone to pack your cold-weather gear. I know it's heavy, but we can always ditch it if we don't need it. Also, make sure to pack your respirators. If its cold, your breath can give your position away unless you're breathing into a respirator." He patted the nearest guy on the back, "Oh, and if anyone has room for extra gear, could you pack a few cannisters of CN-20 nerve gas? Might get a chance to finally try it out!
<Tag EVERYONE>

Danny stepped toward Screaming Eagle. "I know it doesn't need to be said, but I'm guessing we will need that M42 sniper rifle before this one's over." He winked at him.

Preparation for Morse had become mundane. A trip like this could either be very simple or excruciating, and he opted to be entirely prepared for both. He could not begin to guess what they would see down below, but he had a feeling that it was going to involve acid burns and plasma shock. He ensured that his kit was as stocked and organized as could be. His lethal load out had been somewhat decreasing, but the Smartgun that he carried would be someone elses trouble in that moment. He had pain killers, stimulants, instabandages, and all manner of quick fixes which the Delta Dawgs required to keep operational. His surgical capacities were limited, and they needed more to fight through the pain rather then deal with its source in the combat zone, and he was able to keep them moving twice as long as the average idiot with a rifle.

"Them bugs don't ever give a shit 'bout the sight of the breath. Them's wanna kill whatever's infront of em, and they'll bleed fire to get it." Morse commented on the point about the breath. "But cold gear just means more pockets, so fuck it." Morse would have them entirely lined with supplies and ammunition. It could get tedious to carry, especially without the harness of the M56, but he'd manage.

His loadout would be completed, and he'd be ready for action on the moment of the word go.

Oliver slowly and meticulously examined his weapon his brow furrowed. He paid special attention to his combat knife which he sharpened with great care. He occasionally would use it for whittling which was one of his few pleasures. He then began packing his cold weather gear. He turned to Sykes "I reckon I can carry them cannisters if you like. I don't need much in the way of gear. I'm no stranger to numb fingers. That's for true. Did warehouse work when I was a little'un. Even with the heaters it was bloody freezing in winter. Used to call it the Chilly Billy cus the building was called the Old Bill. Course we didn't have much in the way of coats neither."

Danny listened attentively to his new smartgunner, PFC. Grisham. He struggled to follow the train of speech as the accent and lingo were unfamiliar to his ears. He found it hard to come up with a response to the comment, but after a few seconds he said, "Well, thanks for carrying the cannisters. Uhh, better take the cold weather gear just to be safe. You never know what we'll run into."
<Tag Grisham>

Danny Sykes looked at the map of the complex on his viewscreen. The stealth recon drones fed the image directly into the viewscreen as they made their way around the planet. "The map should be showing on everyone's viewscreens. It's pretty basic, and we're going to need some eyes on the ground to recon the area before the rest of us go in. You will be going in a dead-drop reentry capsule to avoid pinging their sensors."

"Eagle, you lead the ground recon team. Sergeant Cano, Corporal Greer, I want you two on the ground with the sniper rifle." Cano and Greer were the other sniper/spotter team. "Also you better take someone who can communicate with the ship. Corporal Pushkin, you are going in too. Questions, comments?" Sykes asked, looking mostly at Eagle.

Nikolai makes sure to attach a bandolier to himself all while making sure he gets the comtech gear ready and secure to his person. Once in his armor, he gets suited up with the cold weather gear, making sure everything fits as tightly as possible. He catches Grisham's comment, barely able to make out what he is saying, but making a comment at what he does understand. "It is colder in home country than here. Some days there, it gets to fifty or sixty below celsius and that is on good days."

<Tag Oliver>

He glances over toward Sykes as he speaks, though his eyes linger on the pulse rifle for a good while. "This one works well... I think they may like incendiary grenades. A good dose of fire."

He stocks his bandolier full of the incendiary grenades before lifting up the pulse rifle, inspecting it closely to make sure the attachments are in order before nodding his head, deeming it satisfactory. Once done, he looks up from the gun and mentions to Sykes, "I do have question actually. Everyone check with me before we go out. I make sure equipment is working properly."

<Tag Sykes>

He makes sure to inspect everyone's communication devices, making sure they are all in functioning order before looking at his own, then adjusts them as needed to the correct channels of communication, testing them to make sure they work. Once done with that, he goes over to the APC to make sure it is in working order, viewing the electronics in detail along with the computer systems in it before coming back. He turns again to Sykes, "It all looks good to go."

Karl liked these specialist platoons, up until now the heavily monitored and regulated units he'd been assigned to had tightly controlled the supplies, however here, skimming a little extra would be a cake walk. Not that he needed the extra box of flares, or the couple of magazines of specialist ammo he quitely pocketed, but any good marine know the importance of trade, a couple of extra bits and pieces now might mean the difference on the next mission when supplies weren't so abundant and the Dawgs had to rely on other platoons or civilians for a meal, shelter or intel.

For himself, Karl collected a standard pulse rifle and ammunition, carefully checking the grenade launcher sights on the rifle. Following this he took an allotment of grenades, red tipped m40 high explosive HEDPs, green tipped m38 armor piercing HEAPs, and a few white tipped M60 phosphorous incendiary. Into his pack, he stowed a few bricks of plastic explosive, some breaching charges, a pair of mines and a box of signal flairs. Finally he grabbed a compact EOD tool kit, and a handheld welder. The rest of his kit followed the standard USCM format, with the addition of cold weather gear as suggested by Sykes.

"Alright lads, don't accidentally shoot me in the back, or they'll spot the explosion from space!" He joked.

Nestling into the cold weather outfit, he enjoyed the temporary warmth it brought. The respirator he was not so much a fan of, orders were orders though.

The pulse rifle had been with him since day one. It was battered, but it was loved and cared for meticulously! He slotted ten magazines into his webbing and pockets, as well as the one in the rifle.

The pistol was equally battered, equally loved. Wouldn't be alive today if not for this thing. He packed a couple of AP magazines for it, as well as 4 regular magazines. Another AP magazine loaded into it.

Jacob um'd and ah'd over the next item, would the shotgun be too much? He decided that, against xenos it wouldn't be, you always ended up up close and personal sooner or later. It was slung across his back, with it came a bandolier of shotgun shells.

Finally, the close combat weapons. An 8" dagger, it would have looked at home in a kitchen. One edge, honed to be frighteningly sharp. He'd had the handle with a knuckle duster attachment, from the base of it a wicked curved triangle of metal protruded. That went in on one scabbard on his hip. The other, a 12" short sword. Double edged, well cared but recklessly used, sported the same knuckle duster handle. This went on the other side of his hip.

He felt excessively tooled up, but he just loved having options...

Dirk went over his gear checking each item and then checking them again. A ritual that he had preformed hundreds of times before. Pulling a cigarette out of the pack, he lit it and then reached for his weapon. His M41A had been stripped lubricated and reassembled making sure every part not only functioned, but had no wear and tear. Stocking his grenades and canister shells he once again made sure they all checked out. Next was his M1911 and Ithaca shotgun. They were older weapons, maybe passed their prime, but they hit hard and had never let him down. Lastly the cold black steel of his KBAR. Running his thumb across the blade and was satisfied that the blade was as sharp as ever he slid it back into his sheath. Tossing the welder and a couple smoke grenades in his pack he put ten magazines in his pack and one in the pulse rifle. Pulling on his cold weather gear grabbed an O2 setup and put in its case, ready to be used.

Hearing Morse’s voice made Dirk grin. “Come on Morse, if you get cold you always have your flask. Or you could always take one of my smokes” he said holding up the pack.

Lieutenant Harper sat in front of the USS Heimlichs operation's center console, studying the readouts and incoming data feeds of the stealth recon drones. Her fingers flew over a keybord, entering commands to the various artifical intelligence assistants, which analysed the huge data packages in real-time.

Suddenly a monitor in front of her came to life ...

DRONE RADIO DATA FEED TRANSMISSIONS FROM TARGET ZONE ... COMPLETE

FEED DATA ANALYSIS ... START
. JAMMING SIGNAL DETECTED, START RESAMPLING
.. RESAMPLE FEED DATA .... COMPLETE
... RADIO SIGNAL ANALYSIS .... COMPLETE
FEED DATA ANALYSIS ... COMPLETE

....
POTENTIAL USCM BEACON SIGNAL DETECTED ... PROBALITY 69 PERCENT
COORDINATES 47°34.4′N 009°02.3′O

... again commands were entered and a map appeared, a single dot highlighted the discovered coordinates. She activated the ships intercom.

"Sergeant Major Sykes to operation's centre"

After Sykes showed up, she pointed to the map on the screen in front of her ...

"drones data feed analysis discovered a potential active USCM beacon signal. Signal is not confirmed yet, something is jamming it. Source of the signal is inside the former penal colony. Visual data confirmes the presence of a starship nearby the colony."

... she paused a moment ...

"send a scout squad down for a recon sweep. We need confirmation of the signal and eyes on the ground."

Karl sat against the wall of the ship, his pack and webbing next to him ready to go. He'd already performed a once over of his gear, and was now passing the time by scraping his initials into the casing of his grenades.

The efficiency of action the USCM bred into a jar head had a downside, lots of free time waiting. For Karl, the waiting was worse than being shot at, at least you had something to do while being shot at. To pass the time he tried to spark up conversation with the rest of the squad.

"You guys ever come up against the Bugs? Intel is pretty controlled in the rest of the corp but I heard they breath fire and have acid for blood. My buddy in basic said his cousin once emptied an entire mag into one, all hits, and it still managed to take his leg and three fingers."

Sykes grinned as he heard the voice of the ComTech. "Thank God, they are all alive," he said to the room at large. Whenever he grinned, his energetic, fun-loving personality was visible to anyone. The years he had spent in the special forces only covered it up, his fire wasn't gone.
