Turn 7: At Death's Door

Post by Pale Rider » Thu Dec 14, 2017 3:23 am

Date: Tuesday August 29, 2179, 2150 UTC
Location: Bordino Sector, Ilium Range
Conspiracy Level: 1
Tech Level: 1
Mission Time: 08:00:00

Following the Orders of Brevet Lieutenant Sykes the Easy Eights boarded the Cheyenne Dropship and headed toward the coordinates discovered by Wang. According to the records of Al Simpson, Colony Administrator and employee of Weyland-Yutani, a family of Wildcatters were sent to investigate coordinates in the Ilium Range. Russell, Anne, Timmy, and Rebecca Jordan discovered something out there. The report also mentioned that the orders had come from someone named Burke to investigate in Sector 15. After this entry in the computer log the next one mentions something about several members of the colony and the marines stationed in the colony returned to the location and were brought back with facehuggers attached. Chestbursters had come out of them and were rounded up by Scientists to study. The entries ended three days prior to the last contact with Colony.
The Cheyenne Dropship passed over the rough terrain towards the Ilium Range. Looking out the windows the scope of the damage created by the meltdown of the Atmosphere Processing Plant can be beheld. The total distance of the devastation starts from the outskirt of the Colony and extends forty meters into all points of the compass. The Ilium range begins Sixty meters further South from Hadley's Hope. The dark mists swirl around the tall peaks as they enter Sector 15 a strange asymmetrical shape comes into view. Sykes orders the pilot to circle the object, as they drew closer the object takes on a wishbone shape.
Pope watched the monitor and reads out the measurements, "The Port Prong measures 161.6 meters and the Starboard Prong is 174.3 meters in length. The vessel measures 116.6 meters in diameter and the width between the prongs is 61.0 meters."

The Cheyenne came back around and settled down on the Starboard side; three large openings had shown on the monitor.

During the flight, Lieutenant Sykes watched the monitors in the APC. He saw the crashed ship, looking like a big horse-shoe. Those fucking things can't possibly fly a ship, can they? No, must have killed whatever was on that ship. When the dropship landed, the APC rolled off. "Private Wang, scan that ship for anything we can use. I want to know if you can pinpoint Lieutenant Knutson's PDT."
<Tag Wang>

"Okay, ladies and gentlemen, I want a nice clean dispersal. Smartgunners leading and moving by squads. If we can't locate Knutson's position we might have to split up into squads. We don't know how much time we have, so we have to move quick."

As the APC rolled forward a rockslide rolled down the side of one of the odd rockspires and covered the front of the vehicle effectively pinning it in place and causing the marines to walk the final 6 kilometers to the downed ship.

<Location: Ilium Range, APC, near derelict ship>

Sitting in the APC, Perez took a brief stock of the situation, as they flew towards Knutson's PDC trace signal.

Colony administration logs provided intelligence about what happened at Hadley's Hope prior to the Easy Eight's arrival. Of course, a WY exec named Burke caused this mess, presumabely.
This scumbag ordered to "investigate" a certain grid reference. Investigate? He did not even added a warning of what the discovery price might even be. In addition, the comtech was able to trace Knutson's PDC back to exactly the same grid reference. So the rescue operation startet in a hurry. They would have to be quick or Knutson would be dead, serving as a host for one of those creatures. Suddenly he rememberd, what happened to Jonson's body, as one of those fuckers hatched. No, that must not happen to Knutson at all costs. They would fetch him and cut this thing out of him.

The Ceyenne touched down, and the the APC rolled forward, but not for too long, as something hit the APC front-up. Sounded like a rockslide. Perez safety restaints did their job.
The APC driver tried to manouver the vehice backwards but to no avail, it was stuck. Great, exactly what they needed the most at this moment. But there was no time for complaining,
as Sykes barked out orders to move out.

Perez opened the safety restraints, grabbed the stowed M56 smartgun and readied the cumbersom weapon. The smartgun system came online and he put the eyepiece in place. Meanwhile the guys of second squad were ready to disperse. The sliding door opened and, being pointman, he was the first to jump out of the vehicle. He was greeted by a harsh environment. An ugly cold wind blew into his face accompanied by a slight but steady rainfall. But their target destination, the alien spacecraft, was a "no miss", even under this weather conditions.

He took a few seconds to let the smartgun tracking system do its work, but nothing was picked up for target.

"Looks clear. Second Squad, disperse and follow"
<Tag Second Squad>

He ran about fifty meters forward, reaching an area with some rocks. He ordered to take cover. They had to wait for the rest of the section.
He took his time to check the area in front, while waiting for the completion of dispersal.

"Lock and load, lets get it boys!!" Farmer yelled as he slapped the magazine onto his smartgun. "I hope you all are ready for a nice stroll through the park!" Farmers squad didn't seem too happy with his sarcasm..

Dirk relieved the safety restraints and stepped cautiously out of the APC. A light mist was falling as he looked at the alien craft in the distance. It looked old, broken and smashed, but old and out of place. He couldn’t make sense of it. On the ships he knew, earth ships they followed a certain logic. A front, back, bridge and view ports. This ship however looked more like it was grown rather than built.

“I don’t think anyone’s home.” He said softly.

Lighting a cigarette he collected his thoughts and shook off the feeling of dread that came over him as soon as he saw the craft. Turning to the Marines he blew out a thin stream of smoke.

“Ok people, we have a walk ahead of us. I want two columns, left and right. Tactical diamonds with smart gunners at point. We move out on the LTs order. Move it.”

Clint found himself daydreaming of days gone by as they sat in the APC during the flight over towards the Lieutenant's transmitter location. He was remembering his somewhat misspent youth and a certain attractive brunette and that thing she used to do with her hair. There was a time that they'd gone out camping and...

The landslide shook the APC and smacking his helmeted head into his harness brought him back to the here and now. Dirk and Perez were calling for dispersion of the troops and the new guy Farmer seemed pretty gung ho. He looked off to the oddly shaped ship while keeping the rain out of his eyes with his left hand. He hadn't pain any attention while they were up in the air and the thing looked like the ends of a wishbone. It also looked like it was going to be a fairly long hike back and forth. He looked at the pile of dirt and rocks that had covered the front of the APC, wondering whether they could dig it out and continue on. The APC is full of useful weaponry and equipment. He checked to make sure that all his equipment was secured and not shaking or noisy. The thought of accidentally making noise and being eaten or dragged off by one of those creatures hung at the back of his mind.

"Easy there Farmer, there's plenty of time to take a stroll...assuming you get through it." He waited til Farmer turned back around before smiling to himself and finding his spot in first squad's diamond formation.

Danny Sykes was ready to give orders, but he was proud to see his men taking action without needing him. Dirk and Perez had already done what needed to be done and were merely waiting for the go-ahead. Sykes nodded to Dirk and said, "Go," He let the men take care of the rest. He stationed himself in the middle of the left diamond and let Dirk take the right. "Wang, ask the dropship to stay near and on standby. And when we get close enough scan for Knutson's PDT."

He felt again the sinking feeling in his gut that he was leading a suicide mission to save a dead man. But he pushed the feeling away.

There was a certain disdain in Morse for what they were doing. Though the briefs were relatively thorough he still did not believe what they were going to do. Of course the colonies had all sorts of strange animals that lived on them, or were experimented on, the thing they seemed to be commenting on did not seem worth all the effort.

The only real purpose they seemed to have was locating a missing Lieutenant, which seemed to be half the job of any infantry group, though typically that Lieutenant wasn’t alone, and if he was he was in garrison and still lost.

Morse let out a groan, and stared at the ground as the dropship came down, and did not say anything as they rolled across the miserable landscape of this colony whos number and name he had easily forgotten.

There were so many now, more worlds then there were states, maybe even more then there were countries on Earth. And all his job was was to land on them, kill some of their people, and go back home to a thankless planet that seemed to treat him with more and more scorn as the years went on.

The call came to disperse.

”Get fucked.” Morse muttered a training unit motto. He grabbed his M41A Pulse rifle, ensured that his plethora of ammunition and grenades were strapped properly, and made ready to move.

He exited and the call came to form diamonds. He wordlessly moved to the right flank of third squad, forming up just behind Coleslaw… a marine that was now holding two of Morse’s previous jobs… and enviously considered what he would do if he had the M56 Smartgun and saw this thing that they all were describing.

Samantha had done her best to have a little 'down-time' chat with her squadmates; reliable McKenna; young and enthusiastic Farmer and quiet and distinctly NORDIC Ragnarson. Now the time had come to deploy and she moved out per Dirk and the El tee's orders.....

She slid into the 'diamond' formation that Pitt had ordered; positioning Farmer and his big Smartgun on point; McKenna behind and to the left; her behind and to the right and Ragnarson in the rear 'walking the drag'. Hearing Farmer call out 'Get it boys' and McKenna's good natured retort; she just shook her head and decided to tease the young Smartgunner herself; "We're not all boys here Farmer....what did they teach you on dat farm mon?"; she kidded gently.

As they approached the strange shaped alien ship; all of her good humor fled and her senses went on high-alert.....that THING looked decidedly ominous to her. "Okay 1st squad; stay frosty and keep yer heads on de swivel......I don't be liking the looks of dis one bit"....

Sam kept her Pulse Rifle ready and her head and ears looking and listening in every direction....

The Easy Eights moved across the rough terrain; a light mist flowed through the vale turning the twisted formations into moving shadows. The rain intensified as the occasional bolt of lightening slashed from the heavens to the ground. The sound of thunder filled the air with its ominous overtones, almost as if the very environment was warning the marines away. Cresting a rise the three openings came into view, from the looks of things they had approximately 2 more clicks until they would be able to enter the vessel.

Danny felt nervous. Something was bothering him. He felt light headed. He shook his head to clear his mind. No, something was definitely wrong. He felt the respirator with his hand. It felt normal... no it wasn't working right.

Clint turned to his right hearing Sykes' comment and looked over. He began to examine the respirator and connections looking for any kind of leak or improper connection. "We'll get ya sir, just hang tight."

<Location: Bordino Sector, Ilium Range, 2 klicks to Derilic ship>

Time was running out for Lieutenant Knutson and everything sworn against him. It was difficult terrain, rough weather, reduced visibility, a lot of rocks and even more shadows ... was there movement? No, just another shadow. That fuckin rain poured down constantly. At least, there was no encounter with the bugs, not yet.

Approximately 2 clicks until the Eights would reach the vessel, brevet lieutenant Sykes reported problems with his respirator. He ordered second squad to halt, until further orders came in.

"Lieutenant Sykes, should our Comtech have a look at it?"
<Tag Sykes>

If it was a mechanical problem, surely Wang was the best shot to deal with it.

Sykes let McKenna fiddle with the respirator and just closed his eyes and tried to be calm. The respirator clicked and started whirring again and Sykes felt the sweet air rush into his lungs. "Thanks. Okay, let's move. I'm good." He nodded to Perez to move out.
