Turn 2

Post by Pale Rider » Sun Oct 16, 2016 2:58 pm

Date: September 23, 2189
Location: Tartarus Sector Space
Operation: Operation Tartarus
Mission Time: 1900

After flipping on the holo-table, Lt. Gruber filled them in on the details of the mission. If it played out as it was expected to they would simply land in the dark side and work their way through the facility to check for the colonists. There were three main buildings at the sight to search as well as several smaller individual residents. 39 hours later found the Eights making a landing at the colony. The image through the window of the cockpit was a well lit community with no outward signs of distress. The pilot settled the Cheyenne Drop ship down with a solid bump and the rear hatch dropped down as the APC rumbled to life and out the door. Grinding to a halt the APC sat facing the Main Facility a four story building nestled in between two other buildings. The one on the left was the housing facility, the one on the right was the power plant and industrial building.

"Alright you jar heads, we are gonna do this by the book. I want 1st Squad to set a perimeter just outside the of the APC. 2nd Squad will leap frog them by 20 yards and set a point. Finally 3rd squad you will leap frog them both and setup just out side the main doorway to the Community Center in front of us. Once we have all collapsed into 3rd Squad we will let Giosso do his magic. Is that clear?" As soon as he had finished speaking he nodded his head and Pope flipped the switch, the side hatch swung open and the Marines began their task of search and rescue!

This had to be Colson's 4th or 5th drop now. While his stomach was no longer trying to make a bid to escape the descent still rattled his brains. Keeping his head back against the head rest in an attempt to the shaking to a minimum he took the chance to look around at the rest of the marines, some he knew well now, others were fresh, and not so fresh but still new to him.

They landed with a thud and while the APC made its way to the compound Colson checked his gear. His K52 slung back so it didn't get in the way, his compact SMG and light armor made his already small frame look diminutive compared to the marines beside him. He'd always gone for speed and presenting a small a target as possible, it helped when you had squadmates like Morse who either drew all the fire or caused the enemy to duck when ever he opened up.

"Maybe he could hold our hands for us too ?"
Colson muttered to his squad, hopefully quietly enough not to be heard by the LT.

The explanation for what was going to happen was very basic. They were going to hit the ground and move as usual. The continuous briefing that noted as such had become a routine that had gotten very old. For Morse who had been doing the worst sorts of deployments for years, he was tired of hearing them. On the other hand it did leave a nice sense of the pattern that they all followed.

Colson's muttering was audible to Morse, who immediately grinned at the notion. "Gee, thinkin' he will?" Morse asked, his gruff harsh tone indicative of his years. "I never done a dispersal before." Morse was actually louder then Colson, but he was trying his best to keep his voice down. Whether or not they heard him, they'd probably have no choice but to deal with it later.

When they approached the target area, Morse snapped and primed the M56 Smartgun. He did not get clearance for carrying the CN-20, but he did not ask permission to utilize his M5 Rocket Launcher.

Some might conclude that carrying both the giant M56 Smartgun and the M5 Rocket Launcher tube might have been extreme, especially for a search and rescue mission. But Morse had been on too many small recon missions that turned into full scale battles to be caught off guard by what a search and rescue may be. Perhaps an ambush. Perhaps a major incident of civil unrest. Perhaps it was even a large animal attack, since they did know there was some indigenous creatures. In either case, Morse was good at one thing, and that was ensuring that any hostile was left dead. So he never entertained the notion that what he did may have been overkill.

Morse hopped out of the APC and charged forward, his eyepiece already scanning for any target that needed its life ended.

He moved out from the APC. The change of surface shuddered through his legs. He scanned the area slowly, thoroughly. Inhaling deeply through his nose, he bounced from one foot to the other, and ran the tip of his tongue over his top row of teeth. His face split into a wide smile, and his eyes were alight with joy. "it's been a while since I got to step out with the eights again, I've been looking forward to this." he said, to nobody in particular.

He began to move forward, dropping into formation with 3rd squad. He kept his body low, crouched. Being as small a target as he could be, his gun was up, the barrel resting near his chin, ready to be called into action. As he moved with the squad, his eyes were constantly roving over the scenery.

It was as if there was a wheel in his sternum, slowly winding tighter and tighter. He lit a cigarette, and the wheel unwound by a tiny fraction. He couldn't help but laugh a little.

The thoughts and fears, the nerves, the terror he still felt at night, that was for on the ship. That's where you were allowed to let those creep in. He was trying to adhere to that philosophy. So far...success.

Clint listened in to the briefing and orders of his superiors. He was both looking forward to an opportunity for redemption and anxious about what lay ahead in this mission. The flight down was mostly quiet and Clint took a moment to enjoy a little more reading on the smartguns. He checked his load out again to make sure everything was in place and cinched down to prevent noise or getting caught on something. He was carrying a frame pack on this mission to allow for additional ammunition for Morse's smartgun. "Hopefully you get to use that big gun of yours soon, this extra ammo gets a little weighty on the back" he called over to Morse as they exited the APC to begin moving into their order. Clint raised his rifle to a low ready and scanned as best he could using his night vision goggles.

As Morse looked about he got the strangest feeling. Something was very wrong. He had not the slightest idea what. Normally he was prepared for someone to be shooting at him. Normally he was ready for a monster to appear. Normally he was prepared and perceiving anything that was in front of him and ready to kill it.

But something was wrong about where they were. Morse had a feeling, something that he only got when he was relatively sober. A stern understanding that something was wrong. Something was entirely out of place, but he did not have any idea what. He felt threatened, and he felt like everyone was in danger.

The trouble was he could not figure out why.

His eyepiece was not picking up anything, nor could he see exactly what was so odd. But something was not right about their situation, and he was not going to stay silent.

"Hold the fuck up!" Morse spat, stopping where he was.

Almost like a trained attack dog that knew something was wrong, Morse held precisely in place, eyes keenly scanning the distance, his M56 ready to tear into anything he saw.

"Somethin' aint right." Morse noted, his demeanor reflecting his alertness. "Somethin's out there."

Morse did not know if it was a robo sentry or a something else entirely, but when he got a feeling like he had, he knew enough to listen to it.

Samantha had endured the drop as well as she could, she was ALMOST used to the violent maneuvers the Dropship engaged in to deliver them to the LZ....

Upon receiving her orders to secure the perimeter around the APC, she replied with a crisp; "Aye-aye" and moved quickly out of the vehicle in a crouch, with her Pulse Rifle's butt tucked in her shoulder and ready to snap up and into action at a moment's notice. Flipping over to her squad's channel, she called out; "Giosso, front left corner....Roberts, right rear corner....Burnside, left rear corner"; and she moved to the front Right corner, keeping alert and her head on a swivel....

When she had confirmation from her teammates that they were in position, she switched over to the platoon wide channel and called out; "First Squad in position"; while maintaining her position and stretching out with all her senses for any signs of approaching danger....

Dirk quickly moved second squad into position past first squad, scanning the distance as he went. Hitting the distance ordered he took a knee, aiming his M41A down range ready for any sign of trouble. Hearing Morse speak about having a bad feeling all Dirk's senses went into overdrive. He didn't trust too many people in the universe. The ones that he did were here.

"Second squad in position." He said, never stopping his scanning of the area.

OOC: Please note, this is entirely Player Knowledge to help set the mood. Player Characters are unaware of the following.

On the Ridge
She sat silently hunkered against the ground. Her hide blending in to the surrounding dull, tan growth. She had been on the surface only once before, she was only two seasons old, but a lifetime of instincts had driven her to the ground when she heard the loud boom in the air above her and to her rear. She had been returning to the place of the soft meats looking for more food to take back to the nest. She watched as the large bird like creature landed near the nests of the soft meats; suddenly, the beak opened and a loud creature rolled out of it and approached the nests. It stopped and her senses detected strange odors and the familiar tang of the soft meats.

Holding in place, his eyebrows in a ramp of caution, Morse realized that the others were keying off of him at the moment. If he was wrong then he was holding them but unnecessarily. If he was right about seeing something then he was giving them a few extra moments to assess it. He unfortunately could not tell, but Morse rarely admitted he was wrong, so he stayed in place still looking about, trying to coerce the situation.

"Saw somethin' movin'." Morse tapped on his eyepiece that ran through the M56 Smartgun advanced targeting. "N' the shredder twitched." He mentioned that the automated motion feature had shifted the weapon.

It was a lie, but he could rapidly convince himself that it wasn't, and to the others it was subtle enough that it might get the job done. He still was not interested in moving because something about the entire situation did not sit right with him. Every drop was getting worse and worse with the Eights, and while they had not come under fire right off the ramp in a long time, he would not have been surprised if this investigation was that moment. Colonists were using increasingly devious tactics to claim their own their own right a Communist rule, and Morse was certainly not going to die just so they could make it so.

"Don't know what. I say hold n' assess." Morse suggested hoping to move to cover while they figured it out.

Lt. Gruber listened to the chatter on the radio. When Morris mentioned movement she clicked into the feed.
"Morse, where did you see the movement. We need to certify this before we advance any further!"

Now the Lieutenant was getting involved, which was making Morse's situation a little bit worse. Still him calling out a hunch wasn't exactly going to get him court martialed. Worst case scenario it was a bad call, but making a bad call happened once in a while, and staying cautious at all times was what made him different from many of the dead marines he'd known throughout his life.

"Somewher' ahead." Morse called back, neglecting specifics. "Right about at the main hub." He thickened his already thick accent a bit to help hide the specifics. Still even staring down at the main complex he got the impression it was the perfect spot for an ambush.

Morse adjusted his robotic leg with his stance, still refraining from moving forward. The long that he held up the confusion the longer he could stay, but the more likely they were to advance without caution if they determined it was nothing. He dragged his M56 Smartgun side to side, wondering what may have been there to shoot, or shoot at him, hoping the latter was less of the case.

Maria frowned, her systems had shown no such movement and the aerial view from the Satellite as it passed overhead showed no evidence of anything being where he described it. However, Morse was one of the long timers, and they were worth listening to, "Okay, change of plans Eights. Sergeant Jacobson, take Third and swing to the left and come up from the southern side. Keep your eyes open and make certain that you are ready for anything. I don't need to see anymore marines die today."

Looking at Third Squad, Jacobson, motioned for them to fall into to line. "Stay low and follow me, " spoke into the channel reserved for Third Squad. Click the piece with his chin he switched to 1st Squad's Channel, "Giosso, get out the motion detector and give me a reading every 5 secs. I want anything that is not wearing an Eighth Identifier singled out and dealt with. If it doesn't respond as a friendly we drop it. God can sort them out afterwards!"

Jacob fell into line, tense, he breathed in long deep breaths. He scanned the immediate area, then further away.

He closed his eyes and concentrated his listening.

Opening them again, he slowly started drumming his fingers against the barrel of his gun. His empty ring finger, his index finger then his middle finger. Light and rapid, speeding up until he made a mistake before starting again.

He turned his head to catch the eyes of his squadmates, and smiled and nodded to each of them in turn. He guessed he was about to know them a bit better from this point on

Dirk scanned the distance for any sign of movement, straining his eyes for anything that could be a threat to himself or his squad. See nothing he turned back to Morse.

" I don't see anything but something doesn't feel right where is everybody? The dropship wasn't exactly subtle when it landed. Do you think we have a welcoming committee, or combat action by now." Dirk said, still looking for any threat.

Hw listened as the lieutenant gave the orders to first and third squad but not second. To him that many old position. Turning to his men he signaled silently for them to stay down and hold position. Nothing to do now he thought but wait. Sooner or later whatever happened here would make an appearance. And they would have to deal with it.

"LT, this is pitt, second squad. We are holding position and awaiting orders."
