"Can try." Morse mentioned back to Dirk quietly. "History says that's a waste a time." There were only a few constants inside of their platoon, and new NCOs and COs were not one of them. Having watched what happened to the man earlier, Morse was not going to be surprised if this one got taken down either. Often it seemed that they did not have the edge to withstand the hurtles. Too much time spent thinking they could save those that didn't need saving, and less on the missions real objective, which was always to get out alive.

But if the opportunity arose, Morse would be more then willing to lay down covering fire to see to it that their current head didn't get torn to pieces.

The opportunity seemed to approach very rapidly as Colson, struggling to juggle the large amount of equipment he was left with, called out civilians just ahead. But Morse's mind did not hear "Civilians". His brain rearranged the words immediately to spell out a new word. "Targets."

Morse eased into a position at the left nearing a wall while adjusting his eyepiece to read targets on a very sensitive stream. The M56 Smartgun did most of the work, Morse just had to tell his big long dog when to attack and when to heel.

"What say we chase em' down then?" Morse quickly, but with a touch of eagerness. He was ready for a fight, and more then willing to jump into one assuming any of them so much as discharged a weapon at himself or the squad.

"Yes, Ma'am" Giosso replied before starting to move out of line. Realizing that he was breaking formation, he gave a quick glance to Sam to make sure there weren't any supplemental instructions, and that she realized he was moving, before finishing the distance to the door. As he moved, his motiontracker and pistol both returned to their respective positions, replaced by the tech's everpresent multitool. He quickly popped off the casing and went to work bypassing the insides.

The door light turns green as Giosso hacks through it. It is ready to open. "McKenna, hit 'em with a flashbang," Maria said quietly over his shoulder. She stood behind him on the left side of the door. Giosso stood on the right. Maria nodded at Giosso, telling him to open the door.

Clint McKenna waited for the door to begin shifting open and took a quick peek around the edge of the door before tossing one of the flashbangs through the hatch calling "Bang out!" Approximately 1-2 seconds later he observed the bang's bright flash of light and thunderous boom. He brought the scoped rifle up to his shoulder and proceeded to enter and clear the space they had just accessed and was ready to acquire targets or give commands as necessary.

The flashbang explodes and leaves behind a ringing noise in the ears. As McKenna goes around the corner, they hear screaming and ragged machine gun fire. One or two bullets come whizzing out of the door.

As the hatch opens and Clint sees a hallway filled with smoke. There are multiple alcoves leading off of the hallway. He sees two men taking cover in the nearest alcoves. They are screaming and covering their ears, assault rifles hang from their necks by straps. He hears ragged machine gun fire from ahead of him, but it doesn't appear to be from either of the men he sees. The one on the left is hit by a bullet in the arm, and blood sprays forth. The smoke obscures his view beyond them. Quickly adjusting the scope to alternate between infrared and electromagnetic vision cycles, Clint drops prone with most of his body behind the cover of the hatchway. Quickly scanning the two men closest, it doesn't appear that they are wearing military uniforms or equipment.

The electromagnetic scan helps to keep the layout ahead of him relatively visible. Infrared seems to show blood continuing to spurt away from the injured man and pool on the ground. "Looks like two armed civvies about 20 meters ahead on the right corporal. Looks like they're taking fire from somebody farther up the corridor but I can't make out the shooter's position." Clint calls out. "I've got two stinger grenades in my left thigh pocket if you want to pop 'em with it.......Second squad we've got some stray rounds popping up at your six."

Samantha instinctively reaches down and hauls Clint out of the doorway entirely after the bullets flash through the opening. Hearing his report, she nods and says; "Good job Clint; but I don't wanna lose you on the first day you're assigned to my squad, mon. Now, stand ready to cover me when the boss lady makes the call."

Stepping into the point position, still behind and crouched down by the door; she turns to Gruber and says; "What's the call El-tee? Try and pull these two out and engage the ones shooting or what?" Hall stands on the balls of her feet, ready to burst into action. If the order is given to try and pull them out; she'll duck low and sprint and dive and roll to their position and disarm them before waiting for cover fire and then pulling them out.

If the call is something else, she'll take it from there....

Jacob drew the torch that he had and began cutting the lock mechanism. When he neared the completion of his task he called over his shoulder, "Alright men, when I kick this door, I will hit the dirt so y'all have a clear shot, if it is clear let's leap frog in and regroup."

"What's the call El-tee? Try and pull these two out and engage the ones shooting or what?"
"Negative," came Maria's response. She wasn't about to risk her men (or women) to save someone who might be trying to kill them. "Engage the enemy from here." She thought nervously that they were spending too much time talking and wasting the advantage of the flashbang. She motioned for Third Squad to back off, four was more than enough to take a hallway.

Meanwhile, Sergeant Abdulov was having a difficult time cutting through the door. He was out of practice with a welder. Eventually he managed it, and kicked it down. He went prone, but the hallway was empty and silent.

Pale Rider wrote:"Private Terrence, relax this will be a cakewalk. You have Morse and Dirk to protect you."

"That's not settling my nerves much Sarge. Who's protecting them?" replied Terence as he settled in at the back of the squad, eyes constantly searching for any immediate threats.
Morse wrote:Believing that they were prepared, Morse checked his ammunition and moved his eyepiece back in front of his right eye. "We're dealin' with ass end Sol'ers here, Dirk." Morse smirked, referencing the idea that they were fighting humans. "Bullet works on em' fine."
Terence took some heart from Morse's ruthless professionalism. "I hear that Morse!"
Whisky wrote:Colson grunted at the instruction. He wasn't rated to use one but he wasn't about to argue with his Sargent. Turning round to Terrence he slung his and snapped his fingers in the marine's direction. "Here, let's have that tracker then."
After handing over the tracker Terence watched Colson fiddle around with it before he got it working.

"First the burner and now the tracker? Looks like they've got you pegged for officer training Colson! I'd be jealous if I didn't have such a huge penis," commented Terence some of the humor coming back into his voice. He was still nervous but he had a job to do and he would be damned if he was going to let his squad down.

"Ma'am and corporal, I've still got two stinger grenades, a stunner and handcuff ties. Depending on how big that alcove is we can probably secure those two closest and then I can probably get a good bead on whoever's shooting at them." Clint suggested to his commanders. He could still make out the two and they seemed to be cowering away from the shooter. Can we fire up the dropship engines to suck some of this smoke out of the hallway?

(OOC: if I get no response, I'll be moving forward across from the two after hitting them with a stinger grenade, then stunning the bigger one and whipping up on the smaller one.)

The two men seemed to have recovered from the flashbang. The injured one shrank back out of sight, but the other began to fire at them with his assault rifle. Clint McKenna threw his stinger grenade. The man picked it up to throw it back and it burst in his hand. He fell back hard and there was a loud metalic thump. The other man began screaming again, hit now by a flashbang, a bullet, and a stinger grenade. The fire from further down the corridor continued.

PFC Giosso came out of cover to fire his VP-70 when he was struck by several assault rifle rounds in the chest. He was thrown onto his back and flailed madly. "MEDIC!!!" screamed the Lieutenant, her voice breaking. Boothe dragged Giosso out of the line of fire by his combat webbing. "Kill those sons-of-bitches!" Maria shouted angrily. "You! Doorback, get your ass up here!" she called to Third Squad's smart-gunner.
<Tag First Squad/Doorback>

Private Boothe looked over Giosso. There were three holes in his chest plate. "Mark, you're fine man. The armor stopped it. Just try to breathe." Boothe looked up and did a thumbs up sign, Giosso was uninjured.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Second Squad advanced down their hallway. Morse and Dirk went first. They made it to the first alcoves and covered the advance of the other three. Sergeant Abdulov led the others as they leap-frogged past Dirk and Morse. As they advanced, they saw a four-way intersection. To the front and on the left were sealed doors, on the right appeared to be an open hallway.

Aun came to life, his large frame was holding the smartgun with ease.

Still, as he moved towards the corridor the muscles in his arm were tensed, and the tattooed snakes on it seemed to wriggle and writhe. He directed the aiming reticule at the corridor, letting the crosshair find the targets.

"I'd, ah, move." He said, his voice deep, resonant and perfectly calm.

Licking his lips, worrying the tip of his tongue against the point of his canine tooth, he smiled and his finger gently pressed down on the trigger. The slight action was at odds with the sound, judder and thud of the gun.

<roll shooting at figures in hallway>

As he let go of the trigger, he was lifting his gun up and moving toward the wall to take cover from any response

<move to wall beside doorway>

He breathed out, he wasn't sure he remembered when he started to hold his breath.

Joanna heard one of the marines asking for the dropship to bring its engines online to get the smoke blown or pulled out of the hallway. She started up the TF900 turbine and began bringing it up to speed. "ATLIS, TIAS, get us a good layout of what's going on out there. Mark friendlies and check the others for tracking software on all frequencies." She told the ships tactical computer system using the integrated voice command controls. "Love see what you can get us set up with sensorwise, keep an eye for any homemade anti air systems," she commented to her co-pilot over her left shoulder.

<Tag Morse>

As the engine got up to optimal speed Joanna gently brought the ship up into a hover and began rotating the ship. Her HUD was full of information, almost to the point of an overwhelming number of indicators and markers. The 25mm gatling gun angling towards the hallway where one of the marines was laid out on the ground and a second marine with a smartgun was laying down fire through the hallway. "ATLIS get this gun set up to alternate between armor piercing sabot and armor piercing incendiary in a 3:1 ratio," she instructed the tactical system. Moments later a green indicator light came on letting her know that her request was set up. "Marines, I've got this gun set to lay down suppression fire in that hallway if you need it" she directed on the marines' frequency. She could see that the smoky hallway was starting to thin out with visibility increasing. "Do you need that downed marine evacuated?" she requested and then left the comms available for a response. She let the gatling gun spin up to be ready to fire at the direction of the marines. That Roberts asking if I could actually fly these lads around and such. Hopefully he'll be all right she thought to herself remembering that Roberts and some of the others had been injured at the other base.

Lance Corporal Allen Morse

The squad came to an intersection, moving by the numbers as they always did. Two doors were sealed, and to the right they could carry on down a hall. Morse did not know where that hallway may lead, but he held for a moment.

He listened to the radio chatter for a moment, and could hear the percussion and pressure against the wall of small arms fire. He held just a moment, his left eye cocking as he picked out exactly what was happening.

”Sounds like ems havin’ more fun then we is.” Morse commented, sounding somewhat concerned. Morse liked jumping right into the fight, but in some way it was because he knew he could take it. He did not have such confidence in everyone else.

But Morse looked to the two sealed doors, and down the hall to their right. ”I don’t like this.” Morse mentioned. ”Nah, I don’t like this shit one bit.” He still kept his weapon at the ready but explained. ”Two lock ups n’ a one way road?” Morse cocked his head down the hall. ”At’s a trap.” Morse looked over at the others, mostly to Dirk though who he hoped would agree with him. ”I say we back up them, since they’re on the fucked wagon.”

Morse assumed he’d be overruled, but he wanted to present a separate option and at least clue the others into his thoughts regarding what he suspected was a Colonist trap.

Pvt. Dale Reed

Pvt. Dale Reed mostly handled ordinance loading. As far as he was concerned that was his job. Nearly thirty years old himself, he had a generally different outlook then his pilot. The numerous combat deployments and battles had taught him to love the motto of “He who fights and runs away.”

He was not a coward per se, but he was always the happiest whenever they got out.

Reed was checking on Roberts in the back, before Pope had taken over. Then he made sure that some loose equipment was properly stowed when he heard the engines firing up.

”Uh oh.” Reed said looking to the ceiling. He then looked at the others. ”Up time. Strap in.” Reed told them, charging back to the front.

The skinny Co-Pilot came through cockpit door, and slammed down in his seat, snapping his headset back on. He heard his black haired pilot speaking to the ordinance command, and started to analyze the situation in front of him. Her order was simple enough.

”Roger that, sky cap.” Reed answered, still looking over the data. ”Haven’t seen anything since we tore open their command deck.” He continued. ”I’ll widen the range, see if the rust suckers have something stashed.”

Reed looked forward and his eyebrows leaped. ”Rough ground. What’s going down?” He asked his dark haired pilot. ”What’s our play?” He really was curious if they were about to get back to shooting, at which point he’d want to put his helmet back on.
