Turn 6: A Dark Secret Uncovered

Post by Corporal Hicks » Sat Apr 23, 2016 3:06 am

The marines stood around waiting for Giosso to hack into the system. Lieutenant Maria Gruber barked orders. “Colson, seal that door and lock it! Morse, seal the other one! I don’t want some monster getting in here while you sit on your asses!” Having said that she stood behind Giosso and watched as he tore through the defenses of the computer system.

Giosso typed madly on the keyboard of the console. He dug in the areas that had the most difficult encryption on them. At first it seemed he had found nothing, then a document popped up on screen. “Hold it,” said the LT sharply. “Sergeant,” she spoke to Sergeant Abdulov, the one she really trusted. “It looks like this outbreak was intentional… the residents of this outpost were just guinea pigs. Whoever did it is watching us right now.” Her voice was cold and emotionless but her face revealed a controlled rage.

Before Sgt. Abdulov could respond, the steel door was struck from the outside by a force that rattled it within its door frame. It was lucky that they had sealed it just moments before. Everyone turned to look at it, and they were again jolted by a sound from behind them. The same thing had happened at the other door. Something wanted inside.

"Those doors are designed for vacuum, not impacts." Mark stated in a somewhat alarmed voice. Already looking at the security's camera system, he quickly tried to pull up the feeds for the areas right outside the two doors to the room. It wasn't much, but even a slight warning of what was about to come though might help the rest of the platoon.

"Corporal Pitt, what are your orders?" asks Terrence as he starts looking around for the nearest cover.

Whatever was hitting the door really wanted to get inside and Terrence really didn't think they were trying to sell cookies.

Security cameras snapped on revealing in the dull lighting two of the things that they had downed in the main tunnel. Where the other had been large these seemed larger still.

The impacts began to show on the interior side of the door. Giosso scanned the files and was able to determine, "Ma'am, best guess we have 28 seconds until breech!"

Maria looked at his marines, her men and the only other female in the room. A smile crossed her lips as she took it all in. Alright, we have come to a crossroads of sorts. Something wants to chew some fat off of our buttocks. We can feed it flesh or lead. I for one like my behind like it is! Anybody else agree?"

“Colson, seal that door and lock it! Morse, seal the other one! I don’t want some monster getting in here while you sit on your asses!”
Colson jumped at the barked order. He hadn't expected their CO to say much and do even less. Even so he worked quickly, snatching a welder from Terrence's webbing he set to work on the door nearest to him. Squinting against the sparks he tried to work quickly. Finishing he stood back up and went back over to Terrence and shoved the welder back into his webbing. "Ta mate." he said just as something slammed into the door.
"Corporal Pitt, what are your orders?"
Colson didn't wait, he pushed Terrence behind one of the consoles and took aim over the top of the same console himself. "Gun up, relax that trigger finger, deep slow breaths. Remember your training. And don't forget, short controlled bursts." Morse was over by the other door, meaning that was covered.

Making it to operations had not been difficult. A quick pace, easy steps, and they were there without incident. This was good, since it meant that they were not having to gun on the run, something which Morse was not overly fond of. He was essentially a walking defense cannon, but as much control as he had with his weapon, it was always harder when trying to move quickly.

When inside of operations, he was simply waiting for new orders. A new lieutenant that any suggestions he had would be disregarded without a second thought, since his file labeled him as a drunk with aggressive tendencies. But he’d also come to accept that most of the time they were sent to their deaths anyway. Not that it was anyone’s fault other then higher ups that they would never meet, but they were recognized as rough necks who could get the job done, and who were easy to replace by others who would do the same for less pay.

So when the new Lieutenant called out to have Morse guard the door. He didn’t say a word. He didn’t know what the first thing was, but he hoped it was the only one.

He watched the door alone after having sealed it, leaning up against a small support column, with his weapon down range. Some part of him wondered if this one was going to count as a job well done, or another ambush reconnaissance mission.

His answer quickly came, as the slamming against his door startled everyone in the room. Morse had not heard the motion tracker sound off, but anything hitting that hard and repeatedly wasn’t exactly a gust of air.

”…..Ok….” Morse muttered to himself, standing up from the post, and positioning himself just beside it. He didn’t know what it was, but if it broke through the door and lunged or shot, he didn’t want to get hit.

As the door pounding came in harder and harder, Morse was put on edge as to what it could be. Whatever it was it was large, and if it was as hard to put down as the last one, he wasn’t going to take any chances.

He placed a finger on his belt and popped the top off of a grenade, exposing the red ignition button on top. If his M56 was going to prove ineffective, perhaps a grenade would make whatever was there think twice.

”Aint a fuckin’ thing trains ya fer this shit.” Morse called back in a small refute of Colsons statement, all the while keeping his eyes on his door. ”Just kill it, and don’ die. Whatever the fuck it takes.”

< Tag Everyone

That was the guiding light that had gotten Morse through to where he was, and to him that was all that really mattered. The training didn’t talk about fighting aliens, or killing creatures that stayed up after you put fifty rounds in them. They taught about conventional warfare, in a very unconventional time. So the best thing anyone could do was whatever they could, and hoped they made it through to the next day.

Dirk snapped out of his frozen state with the impact of the thing on the door. Seeing his men already in movement Dirk grinned to himself slightly. He really did love this job sometimes.

"Ok second, looks like we're having some guests. I want them to have a warm reception. Morse, get that smartgun ready to kill whatever comes through the door. No grenades people, I don't want to bring the roof down." Dirk said as he spat out his cigarette and leveled his M41A at the door.

Samantha just nodded her head to the LT when she gave her little speech and then turned to her squad. Right about now she was REALLY missing Eric with his smart gun. "Okay boys; Mark you stay behind and a little to the side of Boothe and me. If you can, keep an eye on the videos to make sure nothing sneaks up on us while we deal with this…..whatever the hell it is. Salazar; controlled bursts…center mass and head; got it? Stay frosty and keep it together."

She took her own advice, taking a deep breath and putting the butt of her Pulse Rife into her shoulder, aiming down the barrel and waited for a good opportunity to present itself before opening fire….

"Ma'am." Mark replied as acknowledgment, maintaining his complete disregard for appropriate use of honorifics. He stood up and pushed the chair he had been using away, sending it rolling across the room to the far side. Drawing his sidearm from its holster on his leg, he lined it up on the doorway, taking careful aim despite the feeling of inadequacy it provided. If the rifles didn't stop it, his pistol wouldn’t be much help. If only there was something else…

Clint was not a fan of the banging coming from two different doors and tried to watch to see which one was giving in more. He took up a position with a console in between him and one of the doors with his back to a wall. He slung the sniper rifle to his back and pulled the shotgun out double checking that a round was chambered and ready. He aimed towards the door that looked like it was buckling more and clicked the safety off. Here goes, he thought to himself.

Aim and fire as needed.

The south door which they had entered through busted out of its frame. It landed on the floor with a thump that shook the whole room and the ear-splitting screech of tearing metal. A similar monster to the first came charging through the door. If anything it was larger than the first one. The marines behind the console desk opened fire, tearing pieces of flesh from the beast and slowing it. The fire from the gun-barrels lit the dark room like a strobe light and the echoing sound deafened everyone.

The north door snapped loudly, adding to the din. It crumpled inwards and another monster tried to push through, but the hole was too small and its flesh caught on a shard of torn metal. It bleated in rage as Morse’s smart-gun ripped into it. Then it came rolling into the room as another one of the creatures slammed into it and climbed over its back.

The first creature lay in the center of the room, writhing in its death throes. The combined fire of almost a dozen marines had laid it low. As the second struggled to its feet, the third charged towards the nearest guns. It clobbered Maighread Forney, the Sergeant for Second Platoon. He fell on his back and the beast tripped on a smashed terminal, landing squarely on him.

"SEMPER FI! DO OR DIE MOTHER FUCKER!" yelled Terence as he watched the first creature go down in a hail of gunfire.

Focusing on the second creature that was struggling to it's feet Terence fired as fast and as accurately as he could. Hopefully they would be able to take it out and then they could focus on the third creature that was on top of Sergeant Forney before it mauled him to death.

Samantha did her best to stay calm despite her heart-rate and adrenalin level spiking through the roof. Seeing one of the monsters go down, while a second seemed to be on the ropes and a third had landed on-top of SGT Forney; she came to a quick decision....

"Boothe, Giosso; keep firing on the one trying to get to its feet. SGT Forney, STAY DOWN!"; she yelled out as she took a deep breath and aimed at the monster that had landed on Forney. Putting the head of the creature in her sights; she let the breath go and fired off a six round burst from her Pulse Rifle...

Clint switched the shotgun back out for his slung rifle and took a bead on the head of the gruesome looking creature that had landed atop Sgt Forney. He lined up the crosshairs of the scope directly in the middle of the lethal triangle and squeezed the trigger once he was steadied. He was prepared to fire as many shots as necessary to keep the creature down.

He hoped the Sgt would stay down as Cpl Hall had shouted assuming Forney was still conscious or even alive.

The first creature was torn to piece. The hellish barrage which Morse unleashed was enough to stop all by an armored vehicle dead in its tracks, and these things were not so large or so strong. They were just that, things. Some sort of mindless experiment gone wrong, a genetic mutation of infected researchers, or a new type of alien that needed to die.

Whatever the case, Morse did not care. He was the slayer of all things. And like so many enemies that had come before it, the creature lay dead in the doorway. A nice addition to Morse’s rising kill count.

But then came the second, which Morse had not known was there. It climbed into the room and tore apart a Marine who Morse did not know. The sight was gruesome, and Morse felt the typical solemn fear that any Marine got watching one of their number fall.

The sad truth however, was that Morse had seen it so often and had become so desensitized to the roar of cannons and the sight of death that it didn’t even phase him in the slightest.

Instead he backed up, away from the door, moving closer to a Marine named Mercy, so as to not be trounced like the soon to be pronounced deceased Forney.

He still continued to rail into the creature that was atop him however, but kept an eye focused on the door to be ready if something else were to enter.
