Turn 4

Post by Pale Rider » Sun Feb 14, 2016 11:08 am

The two squads collapsed into each other and began to back track to the landing bay. A scream suddenly shatters the silence of the tunnel. It is eerie in nature, filled with anguish, anger, and something else! As the sound echoes through the cool air, the marines cannot be to uncertain that the sound isn't coming from within their headsets as well.

Breaking into a run, they turn the last corner and find the remaining members of the platoon scattered around the bay. Soft groans can be heard now as the scream diminishes into the distance. Pvt. An Chu is missing. There is no blood!

Roberts looked around confused. "What the hell happened here?" he asked to third and fourth squads. He scanned the room with his infrared scanner. What could have scattered them about like that? Roberts stayed very close to the nearest wall, on the alert.

After having heard that plague was written up on the wall, Clint pulled his breathing mask up over his face and made sure the seal was good and tight. He looked around to the rest of 4th squad and saw that they were doing the same. He raised the rifle up to his eye and scanned the landing bay as he cycled through the various image inputs visual, thermal, electromagnetic, etc. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

Both the APC and the Cheyenne were within sight from their position inside the landing bay still. Clint took a look down the hallway where 1st and 2nd squads had ventured to the communications room. Cycling through visual inputs, he didn’t see anything that looked out of place in the hallway. The Lt called out to Hall to fall back to the landing bay. Clint glanced back and didn’t see anything wrong inside the bay. He refocused his attention to the hallway and the area where a threat was likely to come from. He could make out the heat signatures of the squads as they came back down the hallway. He counted the members of the squad and found that they all seemed to be in tow.

Then Clint hears a loud scream that almost sounds like it is coming from his comms. He finds himself knocked against the wall as if a sudden gust of wind or overpressure from an explosion rocked through the bay. He turns to see that private An Chu is gone. Clint looks around for any sign of a hull breach or explosion, before Roberts comes into the bay asking “What the hell happened here?

I don’t know, everything seemed fine then there was a lot of air pressure and screaming”, Clint shot back quickly as he took a kneeling position behind a crate near the hallway door that Giosso had initially opened. Clint scanned the room for any air vents, service tunnels, or other access points. He pulled up the platoon’s motion trackers in his rifle’s computer to see if there was any indication of what was going on.

Falling back with Sam's squad Dirk froze for a moment as the scream echoed in the tunnel. Coming around the corner he looked around, confused. The platoon was scattered, a Marine missing and no shots were fires that he could tell.

"Trackers, I want all motion trackers up and scanning the area. Second, take a defensive position until I figure out what the hell is going on here."

This was new and familiar at the same time. A platoon member disappearing in the dark amidst a scream and no one having the slightest idea of what was going on, that was familiar. A rush of air blowing a squad all over the room, without an explosion being attached to it, that was a new one. But such things tended to happen when you walk into a mission with next to no intelligence on what was going on. For all they knew it could just be a factory defect in the mine itself, and a rogue piece of machinery. But without any fire it was not likely insurrectionists or separatists.

At the call for trackers, Morse moved his eyepiece back down over his eye. Though he did not have a motion tracker, his M56 Smartgun would pick up the slightest hint of a signature that could be believed to be an enemy before the naked eye had a chance.

When Dirk gave orders for second to form a defensive line, Morse oversaw organization. ”Coleslaw, Right. Doorfucker, left.” Morse ordered, moving to take a center position himself. ”Call targets and hold till that shit proves itself as hostile.” Under normal circumstance, Morse would just call for them to shred through whatever came. But with a missing Marine, he didn’t want to run the risk of shooting a friendly and answering for it.

He looked back to Dirk for a moment, still holding his weapon down range, seeing Dirk through with his left eye, and seeing what was in front of the barrel of his weapon with the other. ”Aughta sweep’n clear this shit, Dirk.” Morse called out. ”Get the bird runnin’ circles, have the APC take a few laps a patrol, while we cleanse this fucker from inside.” Morse looked back ahead as he concluded. ”Watcha say?”

Morse rarely operated on the idea of moving slow and by the numbers. He was quick to assault, and believed in almost exclusively offensive tactics.

Dirk thought about it for a few moments before answering. "Ya, sounds like a plan Morse, but I ain't top anymore. I was demoted back to squad leader, that's why you have the pleasure of my company at the moment." He said with a wry smile as he lit a cigarette. "But I'll run it up to command and see what they say."

That should get their attention he thought as he scanned the area for any movement or signs of what had happened there.

Roberts spoke into his headset. "This is Roberts. If we get the APC up, I'll take the gun." He was trained on the APC guns.

It had been a bit of a scramble on the way back to the landing bay. He had kept his head on a swivel and his compact weapon covering where needed. Most Marines found the SMG under powered. Colson liked it for the control in tight spaces.

When they got back to the bay and saw how things were, including the missing marine he cursed inwards, "The hell have we walked into now." he thought to himself.

"Aye" Colson acknowledged Morse's orders. Surprised yet understanding of the hold fire order.

He moved over to the right hand side, kneeling and bringing his weapon up yet keeping his finger off the trigger for the moment.

"What? No quip from the greeny all of a sudden?" he grinned at Terence.

Great Mark thought to himself as the team entered the landing bay and starting to look around. Back on the creepy express.

The technician looked instinctively to his motion tracker, cranking up the sensitivity, figuring a few ghost images would now be worth the value of detecting things the machine might originally have missed. As he looked up again, another idea came to him.

"Ma'am" he asked, turning to Sam. "Permission to retrieve the APC's sensor logs."

A low moan is heard as Pvt. Corderio slowly moves to a sitting position. She stands to her feet, head bowed and slowly sways side to side hands clamped to her head.

About ready to head for the APC, Mark's eyes dropped quickly back to the motion tracker as he picked up the faint tone that indicated the acquisition of a signal. "We've got movement!" he called out. "Faint and retreating – that way!" Mark pointed in the direction of the withdrawing blip on his screen.

Eric liked Mark's idea to check the APC sensor logs. Clever bastard.

He saw one of the newbies, the cute one, stand vicariously. She didn't look so good. Eric wanted desperately to be in the APC where whatever had struck the others couldn't get him too.

Dirk was taking his squad out alone to bring back the lost marine. It made Roberts uneasy, but 'no man left behind' trumped his fear. It had to be done, he knew it. Second Squad could handle themselves, or at least three of them could.

This whole situation reminded Eric uncomfortably of the disaster on the False Cross Campaign. The disaster that knocked him out of the Corps for five years. Five long years that left all his friends dead or seriously damaged. If Eric had stayed with them he might be dead too... but maybe there was a part of him that wanted that... At least he was here now, trying to make it up to them.

One of the marines stood up behind Morse, and he did not take note of it. He saw it happen, and saw Dirk acknowledge one of them, but he was still concerned with what could be out there. If this was in fact some sort of half brained insurrection he didn’t put it passed the Colonists to try some new tactic that would ultimately fail, but would still result in a few extra dead soldiers.

In that moment he really wanted to reach down and grab his canteen, but he was momentarily unsure of where their commanding sergeant was. He wasn’t quite like the previous ‘Dog Walkers’ they’d had, where he respectfully looked the other way. He was a “Veteran” that was more by the book. And Morse had been in the Corps long enough to know that the book was just something that got buried with those same naïve marines.

What Morse did take note of was the call out of movement, feint and retreating by the notation. This call perked up every member of the ever destructive “Dead Shots” that were Second Squad. Even if Doorfucker hadn’t been there for the sheer amount of time that Dirk and Morse were, he had no doubt picked up the game the same way Coleslaw had for his time.

Morse formed up to the right of Dirk, the Squad taking their positions as a firing line following on his lead.

”Get yer “Red-Eyes” up.” Morse suggested. ”Could be some insurgent turret trap ready fer springin’, n’ we wanna shred it ‘fore it shreds us.”

The infrared eye pieces were never perfect, but they could still pick up electronic heat discharges, and if some colonist crazy had rigged up an autocannon, or light infantry mine, they may have a better shot of spotting it. Morse having his eyepiece for the M56 Smartgun already in place had a much more sensitive computing unit, but four eyes were always better then one.

He advanced at Dirk’s pace, his fingers ready to spring the triggers of his devastating weapon on a moments notice.
