Prologue

The small satellite that orbited it's mother suddenly flashed a brilliant blue as several thousand megaton of explosives nicknamed Planetbusters struck repeatedly the surface of the moon. LT. Colonel McGahee rained down some good old fashioned Marine Corp Retribution on the Secessionists. The mission that had led the Easy Eights and another platoon to the surface of the moon had resulted in abject failure as far as those higher up the chain of command were conceconcerned. Lives were lost and for one Marine in particular his life would be changed for ever.
Lance Corporal Allen Morse found himself standing on a device that he hadn't had to worry with since bootcamp. A landmine had sheared his left leg off at the knee. The stress of the situation and the inability to perform efficient field medical aid because of enemy fire resulted in the surgeons electing to remove the entire leg up to the hip.
This procedure is successfully performed and Morse is rewarded for his landmine diffusing with a military grade bionic limb. This procedure required 12 months of recovery, rehab to learn how to effectively utilize the leg, and mandatory psychological therapy to help him to come to grips with his new life.
During this time the Easy Eights were relegated to escort duty for frigates flying from the military base to Pluto's Small military installation, a scientific research facility, and a small mining operation.
The surface of Pluto is not friendly to human lifeforms or their equipment. The temperature ranges from a balmy -140 degrees Celsius in the upper atmosphere to a frigid -244 degrees Celsius upon the surface during winter. What terraforming has been done is limited to devising equipment that doesn't shatter in the daily tornadoes that cover the surface. The scientific community consists of 10 men and women who study the Kuiper belt and the space debris that floats within it. The military presence that is there is no more than a platoon, often less. They provided security and scanned the space lanes to warn of any unauthorized ships entering the Milky Way Galaxy. Five men made up the mining and smelting operations. They provided the necessary materials for the expansion of the facility as well as maintenance for the base. Due to the extreme cold the base is situated below the frozen rocky surface. The base is under the leadership of Iseol Wong, Ph.d of Astronomy.
The members of the team work on two year stints.
