Re: Turn 1 Down to Gehenna

Morse shot a small jet of air from his nose as he gave a tiny laugh at the notion that things ‘could get real’. Things were always in an odd standing when you were stationed in a single place for that long. If you were actually there, especially at the day of age they lived in. When you could respond to a call within months that was whole systems away, you did not need people to stay very close. More then that, with the limited manpower that the USCM had, if you were devoted an entire platoon to a single area for months at a time, there must have been a serious problem.

Eyeball was probably too new to realize that, or may be he did and it was part of the reason he pointed out the assumption. Either way there was not a chance in the universe that he knew what he was in for. But that was how they all started. Morse had grown fairly familiar with their particular enemy, but not comfortable with them. No one ever could be truly comfortable with the foe they faced.

”Restless natives…” Morse echoed with a slight airy laugh, that almost caught a bit of nerves. ”Ya Ol’ Ekyl,” Morse said abbreviating Ekylprillion. ”has a lotta weird shit goin’ on on her.” Morse started.

He lowered the dolly again and loaded some boxes. ”Buncha monkey fuck tribals what use nothin’ but rocks… they go down real good’n easy.” Morse showed then a bracelet that he’d taken off of one of them to Eyeball. ”Picked this up off a one a em that was real big n’ bad.” He then moved the dolly again. ”Then there’s a Wey-Yu lab not too far down. Aint no one knows why thems here but it aint nothin’ good given the other trouble.” Morse ended. ”Big ass bug cave er some shit… that’s the big trouble.” Morse finished, taking the dolly down.

"well i heard about the first two" Eyeball replied, "but bugs? you mean the insect kind or the............ xenomorph kind??" Eyeball asked tentively, there had been rumours during basic and even some very currupted shoulder cam footage in his comms course but never anything official.
even with his personal skills in coms and security systems eyeball had not been able to clear the footage much, they had looked like large ants with a huge tail, exoskeleton and an elonggated head, although the footage had shown they were quick, how much hassle could they be, they were just bugs, against pulse rifles smart guns and auto turrents this camp had they would never get within 200 meters.

In respect to the circumstance this was not classified information. Their specific job was no doubt going to be an investigation of the Wayland-Yutani facility, or at the very least a plugging of the bug hole. As far as Morse was concerned they should just drop a very large nuclear weapon on the whole site, but that would be destruction of Wayland-Yutani property and the marines were of course an expeditionary force, so investigations were right up their ally.

Still Morse found it ironic that he had be the one telling the new guy about what they were doing, since he was absolutely adamant of all of them keeping their mouths shut so as to not have a memory wipe done. But for where they were it was important for him to at least have an idea of what they were doing.

”I was always figurin’ it was a bit a both…” Morse said. ”Though more’n the aint no one walkin’ into a bug’fested colony walks out alive sorta way.” Morse said. He wasn’t going to get into much detail about previous dealings with them. But he remembered Dirk’s explanation to Colson, and so he thought he’d try for that.

He stopped the handtruck and looked at Eyeball. ”Tough ass exoskeleton, moves fast’s’fuck, good six feet tall some of em – others ‘bout a foot, strong’s hell…nuff to tear metal apart, razor sharp claws’n’teeth.” Morse moved back to the hand truck a moment and stopped as remembered his own wound. ”Oh right, n’ acid fer blood. So if ya pop one too close, yer gonna get a nice burn bath.” Morse stopped and went back to pulling the dolly.

He grabbed another box. ”Thing is… ems don’t attack ya one at a time. They swarm.” Morse spoke with a sort of cynical optimism, as he worked with a smile. They had not dealt with them in quite a while, but he had the feeling as well as the others for quite some time that such a trend would not last long.

”Any questions?” Morse asked, knowing there might be one or two.

Duncan heard nothing. Frustrated, he tuned his comm to the NCOs.

"Quinn, Pitt, Hall, Morse, bogeys on the outer perimeter." Duncan aimed and readied himself to kill it alone if need be. One bullet will stop the threat, he thought.

Dirk put down the crate he had been caring at Duncan's word letting it fall to the ground with a crash.. Running through the rain and puddles he made it to the perimeter. As he scanned the area outside the base for any movement he pulled the comm close to his mouth.

"Outstanding job Duncan. Get to high ground and scan the area. Fire on any movement you perceive as hostile."
<Tag Duncan>

"Morse, Hall. Get your squads ready for enemy contact. This is not a drill. I say again this is not a drill."
<Tag Morse and Hall>

Looking at his PAD he checked the auto turrets that ringed the fire base they had put together. He was confidant that anything that came too close to the base would die. After all, Quinn and he had put the overlapping fields of fire out together. There was no rout that would be safe.

"LT this is Pitt. Contact over the wall. Get to the APC sir. We'll wait for orders."

Morse smiled and nodded. ”Ya, shit sucks. But I wouldn’t worry none, cus…” Morse stopped in the middle of a bitter joke as his earpiece suddenly began to go off. It came on with a click and the words he heard were ones that he not want to hear.

The words meant incoming from outside. Who it was, what it was, that was not specified. But for the moment that did not matter. It was the alarm that meant everything. And with it Morse immediately released the hand truck.

”Dunc says incommin’!” Morse yelled immediately. ”Drop that shit’n get to the sticks! Move!” Morse said ‘sticks’ but was obviously referring to the perimeter wall. He did not know where, but he knew that it was important to be ready as soon as was possible.

Morse did not wait for them, he started running towards the center which was not far from their location. ”Dunc!” Morse called out into his com as he ran. ”We’re gonna need a location here.” He requested. Technically there was a great deal of exterior that they could run towards. But if gunfire happened they’d figure it out.

He got to the center of the firebase where he was looking to get and came to a box. It was a large black case, and when it was opened there sat Morse’s M56 Smartgun. Written on and decorated with various charms and personalized items. Morse was always wearing his harness, he needed only to pick up his headset and attach the weapon, which was simple enough.

A click and a snap and the weapon was back online and ready to operate. Morse then looked over to the direction Duncan would be at and started moving that way.

Morses' orders came through in stereo, over his helmet comes and because he was standing right nest to him,
as Morse took off Eyeball followed he was in Morses squad, were the CPL went Eyeball went until told other wise. he checked the load in his pulse rifle, full mag, plenty of spares with him so all was good.
Morse grabbed his smart gun and Eyeball was right next to him awaiting a location on the perimeter to head for.
Eyeball had already spotted the position of the sentry guns and noted that someone had a PAD up making sure they were fully operational, eyeball had specialised and excelled in security systems in basic and completed courses afterwards, although rated expert he hoped that whomever had control currently was more familiar with their current fields of fire and set up because he had not had the chance yet.

"Nothing dampens your mood does it Morse? You couldn't get any more sour." Grinned Colson at Morse's implication that he'd been slacking as he moved up to get to the cargo.

"Fuck off, as if you'd be so lucky." Replied Colson to eyeball's jab although there was no real venom to the response, he knew banter when he heard it. "And it's Colson." He said pointedly. Wasn't to much different to the first time he met Morse. Morse just must have that effect on people.

He was moving the cargo listening to the conversation between Morse and Eyeball, when suddenly Morse called out
”Dunc says incommin’!” Morse yelled immediately. ”Drop that shit’n get to the sticks! Move!” Morse said ‘sticks’ but was obviously referring to the perimeter wall. He did not know where, but he knew that it was important to be ready as soon as was possible.
Colson's hands were already empty, so he swung his rifle round and fell in with the rest of his squad.

Samantha had been on her 'off duty time'; which at a forward post like this pretty much meant get some shut-eye if possible. Hearing Duncan's call come in over the comm; she hopped out of her rack; snatched up her armored vest and strapped it on; grabbed the pack carrying the rest and her Pulse Rifle and raced to the wall where Duncan was while calling out over the comm on 1st Squad's channel.

"Giosso! Konterran! Obi! We've got a contact; possibly hostile; outside the walls. Grab your gear and move to Duncan's position asap!"

Running up to where Duncan and the others were forming up; she strapped on her leg pieces while keeping one eye over the wall in the direction tha Duncan's rifle was pointing. "Whada we got?"; she asks in a slightly breathless voice to Duncan.

When Duncan's voice came over the radio, Quinn put the clipboard and bolted for the APC after slapping the control panel to raise the ramps for the Snakefighter. He didn't like sitting in a metal box while his people did the fighting, but it was also the source for the unit's heavy supporting fire. As usual in the Corps, someone had to do it.

He got to the M577 Armored Personnel Carrier, hauled the door open and then shut it behind him. The motion trackers would be of limited use in this rain. He fired them up anyway to give him something to work with.

He started up the vehicle itself, coming to life with an electronic whine and the thrum of deep throated engines. He ran the check on the mortar system, spinning up the six shot cylinder as it went. The big cannon also came to life, tracking around as it tested it's own movement.

"Fire Support is ready Sergeant. Talk to me when you get a sighting." Quinn told Dirk via radio, as he went through the process of lighting up the camera settings, although several had some static on the screen. He solved that by slapping the side of the housing a few times, and they steadied out.

Mark was halfway down the ramp with his second load of cargo when the call came through. Although Morse wasn’t his squad leader, a perimeter contact would inevitably mean everyone would be called soon enough. Knowing he couldn’t simply drop the dolly on the ramp, he half-ran the last few feet and dropped the dolly as soon as it was on the flat landing pad. With that particular trio of supplies temporarily safe, Mark took off running for the comm’s building, where he spent the majority of his time, and therefore, kept his equipment. He got half way there before Sam over the radio, confirming his earlier suspicion.

“Copy that, Ma’am,” he called into his radio as he threw open the door to the comms building. Just inside the door was a small backpack. Giosso tore open the top, pulled out a datapad and pulled the thing closed again before slinging it over his shoulder and running for the wall. The device, which he’d been so eager to grab, was an auto-turret override control. In nice clear areas the autoturrets would pick up and obliterate targets with ease. The rain and hot jungle, however, made their sensors a bit less reliable, and the control would let him get them shooting where he wanted, when he wanted.

With his M56 Smartgun at the ready, Morse began moving towards the perimeter. He still did not have a location on a target which was an issue. He was not at an elevated position and did not know what was there to be seen on the other side of the various barricades that held up along the bases exterior.

The lack of a called target was a bit agitating. Morse wanted to make sure that whatever was beyond the base was completely wiped out before it had any opportunity to try and hit them. If it was human forces that would have been different since they would likely be hit first no matter what. But that was not the circumstance on the world which they were standing on and so he needed know.

”I need a target here.” Morse yelled out. As he came along one of the barricades, which had an opening to fire from. ”Any a you see one?” Morse called out over the com loudly.

Obi was still cooling down in his PT gear when Sam burst in and shouted out an alarm. Obi rushed into his sections quarters. Reaching his bunk, Obi grabbed on his chest armour and slipped it on. Forgoing his BDU's and shin armour, Obi grabbed his Pulse rifle and removed a magazine from his webbing and slammed it into his rifle, quickly picking up his helmet, Obi raced out to meet Sam.

Obi smiled as Sam looked at his appearance, helmet, chest armour, pulse rifle, PT T-shirt, shorts and training runners.

Duncan trained his scope on the target. As he focused in, he relayed the message. "Southeast. Lead subject is human. Two unidentified in pursuit," he said, focusing in on the pursuers. He knew he had the best optics in the platoon and wanted to use it to get these things before it turned into the Alamo.

"Giosso, link me up with the sentries."
