Turn 14 - Master

Post by Nick » Sat Jul 09, 2011 8:55 am

Unidentified Asteroid, near space trade lane, In vicinity of communications relay
Mission timer: 01.59.22

The burst from Duncans pulse rifle went wide, sending a burst of sparks and pieces of wall showering over the alien critters.

Lt Ericson urged her marines to move faster. Duncan was last in line, moving backwards, sending a burst towards the entrace to the sphere room each few seconds. "Duncan! Move it!" Lt Ericson pulled him by the shoulder.

She glanced back and moved into the corridor "Don't strech the line, keep togehter people...keep it tight!" she shouted over the noise from Duncans roaring pulse rifle. The monstrous roaring bounced between the walls, reverbing and echoing like they were inside a drum. The flickering from the muzzle flash cast erratic shadows on the walls in front as they rushed down the corridor.

Suddenly Duncan stopped firing. The silence poured in on them from all directions, leaving only an eerie ringing in their ears. The critters had not followed them in the corridor. Only the bright light from the orb could be seen far behind them, but no spindly shapes.

"Why are they not following us in here..." she said to no one in special.

They moved further down the hall, and the light behind them were now so weak they had to resort to their shoulder mounted lights to see anything. Lt Ericson also noticed a thin mist forming around their feet. The mist got thicker and thicker until it was impossible to see more than a few meters in any direction. "Ok careful people, we don't want to fall into some kind of chasm here..."

Lt Ericson felt exhausted. The last hours battles had completely sucked the wind out of her. She froze from the perspiration drying on her back and she felt thirsty and hungry.

Suddenly the corridor widened into a large crescent shaped room. The room was enormous, cavernous even. The roof shot up high above them and pillars thick as old oaktrees held the roof up. In the middle of the room an enormous throne sat, and on it a creature like they had never seen before. It was huge. It wore some kind of mask. It had humanoid features, but they were hidden as it seemed joined to the throne on which it sat. Pipes and tubing ran down its back and face, plugged into the chair below it. From the bottom of the throne the mist that covered everything around them flowed out softly.

A blueish screen shone in front of the creature, seated on some kind of console.

Obi charged forward as Duncan's Pulse Rifle came alive behind him as the marine provided a rearguard and proved a lethal hazard to those things if they tried to follow. The marines spread out into the cavern, Obi sticking close to his other squad mates as the Pulse Rifle fire abruptly ceased behind him.

Obi breathed deeply, wishing he could only wipe the sweat that was dripping from his brow, only to curse as he realised that his EVA suit would not allow. As his breathing slowed Obi only then realised the sheer enormity of the area that the platoon had run into. What the hell... If the size of the place was not enough, the very large deceased looking humanoid figure sitting in an equally large chair facing a console made Obis jaw drop.

"Well aside from those fucking ant looking things, does anyone have any idea what the hell that thing is?"

Samantha Hall kept her neck on a swivel; her Pulse Rifle jammed into her shoulder and her senses on high alert. After a little while though; she was exhausted and her heart hammering in her chest sounded thunderous in her own ears.

Coming into the huge chamber; she let out a sigh of relief when she saw that the wretched aliens weren't folloiwng them; but she quickly shook her head in anger over her relief when her fellow marines made comments over the strange, new alien form in the room. A brief moment of study though made her wodner about something and in a hesitant voice, she spoke up...

"Do you think....that blue screen or console thing is some kind of computer with controls to this place?"

Quinn backed up with Duncan, firing his pulse rifle as he went. He leapfrogged with the other Marine, allowing the two to keep up a constant stream of fire. Then the xenos stopped coming. Quinn knew there were more back there, but they didn't advance. That alone was damn strange.

He walked back, keeping the weapon leveled in the direction the xenos were. He tapped Duncan's shoulder as he went, signalling the other Marine that he was moving back.

He moved into the big room, turned around and stopped in his tracks, looking at the large alien.

"Sacred feth..." he muttered, quite awe struck at the sight.

Obi stood and stared. He realised he was probably gaping like a fish out of water, but he was pretty certain that he was not the only one in the platoon when they realised what was confronting them. Holding his pulse rifle by its pistol grip Obi let it hang down by his side as he moved to stand beside Sam.
"Do you think....that blue screen or console thing is some kind of computer with controls to this place?"
Letting out a slow breathe Obi's eyes never left the remains of the alien. "I really don't know Sam...Who knows what it could be?"

"Duncan you got the que..." Lt Ericson snarled.

She moved closer towards the towering form, that seemed partially melted into the throne upon which it say. The mist whisked around her boots as she neared the creature. "What the fuck are you..." she whispered as she moved closer. Her heart racing, the blood hissing in her ears, her tongue sticky to the gum and her hands clammy inside her thick fingered gloves.

One step at a time she moved closer.

Dirk stayed close to the LT as she moved closer to the thing sitting on the thrown, keeping his M-41A ready to fire at all times. They hadn't followed them, he thought. Why?.

"Stay alert Marines, God knows what we're up against."

"Careful Ma'am. I don't know what that thing is, but the Xenos don't seem to want to mess with it, so we know it must have some kind of control over them, or at least fear." Dirk said.

Joe really didn't know what to make of it. Fighting alien bugs in the middle of an asteroid that was apparently some sort of ship or what was left of a ship was not in the job description. He voiced his thought aloud after staring slack jawed at the large "statue",

"Whatever that is, thats not what the recruiter told me I'd be doing."
Dirk Pitt wrote:"Stay alert Marines, God knows what we're up against."
Dirk thankfully reminded Joe that he had a job to do.

"Gotcha." He turned around and kept an eye on the entrance where the other things were kept at bay for some reason. The optimist in him said they recognized the Marines' fighting prowess but he highly doubted that. Probably something to do with this room.

Then it hit him. He'd heard rumors in Boot but it took him this long to realize. Black. Sleek. Bugs.

Acid for blood.

Obi moved slowly towards the remains of the creature that was seemingly fused to the seat. Moving carefully, watching his footing and being mindful off booby traps Obi realised how small he was the closer he got.
"Stay alert Marines, God knows what we're up against."
A small grin broke out. "Yeah, well its not like it can get any worse can it?" Obi said with a small degree of sarcasm.

Duncan fell back with the platoon into the room. He kept his weapon pointed towards the hallway, in case the aliens were just regrouping. He quickly checked his six, where the other marines staring at ... an astronaut?

"Ma'am, is there anything here that can help us get the hell out of here?"
