Easy Eights - Reassignment

The U.S.S. Nostromo emerged from hyperspace into the Sol system, a burst of Croneau radiation heralding the arrival. The ship's drives igniting to carry it on a ballistic trajectory towards the shipyard ring around Mars.

Inside, the sleeper tubes, so called "coffins" started their wake-up cycles. The Easy Eights woke up, dressed and got to their duty stations. Within several hours, the Nostromo docked at it's assigned berth in the Delta quadrant, Beta section of the ring. A tube locked itself against the ship, and a handful of officers "swam" over to the ship itself.

The Captain that had been leading the Eights met with them, a young Lieutenant saluting and handing over a piece of paperwork. The Captain looked it over, nodded and gestured away. The Lieutenant nodded and followed the Captain into a small conference room, leaving the Eights to finish cleaning their weapons.

Glancing up every now and then from the cacophony of mechanical clicks that weapons preparation provided, Chappell tried to take in as much as possible about his new unit.
He tried to link attitudes with names and voices until finally he opened up, saying jocularly "So which one of you should I be most afraid of?"

Morse had already begun drinking from his canteen the moment he got up. The extra jolt from the 'homebrew' was the best way he found to start his day. He followed the procedures as was usual after waking up. After hours, having eaten, and done relatively nothing, the ship finally docked. They went to work on checking their remaining used equipment.

Morse started to walk towards another end of the room, grabbing a rolling cart as he usually did. He started moving it over towards his "space" when he heard someone speak up. He had absolutely no idea who this was, and made the quick assumption that he was a transfer in. Either way, he didn't really care, but he was awake enough to make words with his mouth.

"The fuck nut with one eye." He mumbled just loud enough to be heard by this new guy as he moved by him with the cart.

He had his M41A-E2 on his shoulder and set it down, and began to dismantle its many pieces. He had quite a bit of difficulty with it this past mission, and was surprised he'd actually walked out with it. But he didn't think he could stomach carrying it again, especially with all his other gear. Not to mention he'd heard that Quinn might be getting reassigned, which would put him in line to be on medical duty next time around. He wasn't entirely on board with having to drop the E2, but it would be way too heavy for him to have to carry both things like he'd done before.

"the fuck nut with one eye"
That took the smile off Rednus' gaunt face as he watched the speaker pass him. There were issues here between marines, and he didn't know how deep the problem went. He made a note to approach Morse to find out more, sometime soon.
could be nothing... thought Chappell as he searched through his belongings for his 'gateway welcome bear' a small, charred black clip-on toy he'd been presented with years ago while serving with the Eight Balls and used to attach to his weapon. He knew it was stupid but liked to think it had brought him luck in previous outings. He located and pocketed it and scanned the room looking occasionally for 'one eye'. After igniting the first of many smokes that he planned to consume pre-mission, he stood and offered the pack to the other marines in a friendly gesture.

Morse continued to pick apart the M41A-E2. It was a bit more complex then the standard model, namely because it was elongated, and lacking the simplicity of just an extra barrel. But in the time he'd been working the test of it, he knew it forward and out. Starting at the end of the barrel he kept pulling it apart, and then separating it from the casing around it. He stopped a moment, pulling the canteen of his 'special' off of his shoulder. As he brought it up he looked across at the new assignment.

"The hells the point a smokin'" He started taking a sip off of the top of the thing. "When ya could be drinkin'?" Morse squeezed out after drinking from the canteen, then setting it down of the cart.

He'd actually made his current batch without any alcohol in it. It was the taste he wanted at this point, because that was the bit he liked. It still smelled terrible from the open cap, and it burned like hell when it came into the stomach of those that weren't used to it. It even stung in Morse's own insides, but he was very used to it. But it kept him awake, and it was one of the only things he liked about living each day.

by Kurosaki, Ichigo
Kurosaki woke with a start, with dreams of his house burning in Toyama still lingering in his mind. He shook his head, as if to dislodge the dream from his brain before getting dressed.
He was re-assigned from Easy Duty on a base near Sasebo, Japan back to his old platoon and he was understandably quite happy. The 'soldiers' at Sasebo were more concerned about getting booze and chicks more than upholding the law and oath of the military, which made Kurosaki's job as a squad leader hard enough as it was. All in all, he was quite happy. Until he had seen the roster.
Kurosaki did not like his squad because he had no idea who they were. His old squad, Jones and Chan were transferred out. The scuttlebutt was that Chan was on Icarus, were Kurosaki had his first mission and Jones was warming the earth.
Of the three other squad members, he only knew Morse, and that was fleeting at best. They had served together for the past few missions, but never really quite conversed past the "OH SHIT! GRENADE!" that Morse yelled at Kurosaki.
Dunn was the smartgunner of his squad and Kurosaki had never met him, but he had heard all about him. If the rumors were half true, Kurosaki truly had his work cut out for him.
Valentine... Who was Valentine? Who's the dude named Valentine? Kurosaki thought to himself. He had no idea who he was.
Kurosaki sat down on the chair next to Morse and Chappell, putting on his shirt and socks.
"Morse, good to see you again." Kurosaki said, with a small smile.

Piece by piece the M41A-E2 was set down on the cart and Morse grabbed a rag and started to wipe down the pieces of the interior. He actually thought about leaving it in pieces and not cleaning it at all because he wasn't likely to pick this one up again, or at least not for a long time. And there were without a doubt some sailor or robot that would do it for him without a moments hesitation.

"Ya, I bet it is." Morse said in the sarcastic way he said most things. His accent was still thick and through it. He reached down on the cart and took another drink from what was in his canteen. He had never actually met this guy Ichigo. The only thing he really knew about him was that he was in the same unit. But for the most part he didn't know who he was, but that was how it was for most people in the unit. He removed the canteen from his mouth. The scent of the drink was like muddy swamp water and it moved around pretty fast.

"Ahh" He wheezed from it hitting his stomach. "Why hell'd we leave a shit pipe like the last op just to come back to Mars" He said with particular emphasis on the location. "There aint a damn thing on or around this red ball what's been set good n' gracious what what's couldn't a been found 4 extra minutes in a direction that's that one that way." He said pointing at a wall. He actually had no way of knowing what direction he was actually pointing at, but he was referring to Earth, on account of his absolute distaste for any planet that had to be colonized.

"Hey" said Chappell looking at Ichigo, "The name's Rednus, how long have you been with the unit?"
His attention turned back to weapons prep, awaiting the response and realised his boots needed polishing.

Chappell removed some boot cleaner from his pack and attempted to hide a scuff on his heel. The stuff stank , but always reminded him of his first few months in the U.S.C.M, back when he was just a bright-eyed grunt preparing for inspection. A small smile crept across his features as he realised Morse wasn't just drinking water.
"What you got there?" he inquired.

Kurosaki smiled at Morse for half a second, then realized that the man was simply being sarcastic and he frowned. He turned away as Morse continued what Kurosaki thought was a drunken tirade.
Although the man was drunk, he did have a point. Back at Toyama and Sapporo, heard alot about Mars. Or in correction, actually heard about Mars had Nothing. With the exception of a small base, there was nothing on the red planet, well except...
Aliens.
Kurosaki's breath quickened. The Aliens had wiped out many of his friends, Colwell being one of them. He prayed for it not to be so.

Kurosaki smiled at Rednus. A nice marine for once.
"I've served with this unit for about four missions, then left for about six months. Much of the things I did during those six months are classified. How long have you been in the service?"

Sam Jack Dunn sat on one of the large wooden crates, a little distance away from the rest of the marines. Disassembled on the crate next to him was perhaps the most complicated gunsight in existence, his modified M56D Smargun's Head-Mounted Sight. After the disaster of Operation Acid Reign and the month-long re-constructive surgery that had been required to keep him alive, his destroyed eye had been replaced with an advanced rail that directly connected with a smartgunner's HMS to provide him with superior sight - multiple vision modes, that kinda shit.

It'd damn well saved his life on the past operation, when the bugs had eventually broken free from their quarantine. Right now, he was performing routine maintenance on the HMS and the neural link that connected it to the socket that filled the gap in his skull that had once embraced an eye. Cleaning the leads, replacing the lens...it was a tricky, complicated task that occupied his mind and kept it from drifting back to last mission or, gods forbid, the mission before that one. He knew the HMS was fine, just as he knew that he needed to distract himself.

The voices of the others floated back to him, especially that of Morse, who's opinion of him was as obvious as it was loud. The smell of alcohol confirmed Sam's suspicion that the man was drunk, again, and whining about everything he didn't understand, which unsurprisingly seemed to be a lot. Shrugging his shoulders, Sam put an end to that train of thought and got back to working on his sight. Morse could whine all he wanted, it wouldn't make a difference in the long run. Sam had figured out that much after his second mission. It was why he wasn't going t say anything unless he had to.

So, he got back to maintaining his kit, and waiting for orders.

(Let me quote somethin' for ya team, it was in the post before my last.

"He'd actually made his current batch without any alcohol in it."

Morse is sober, there is no alcohol there, and homebrew has only minor alcohlic content generally, but there's none in this. On top, anyone who's been in the platoon more then 2 days would probably know that this is how he talks on any day of the week.)

PFC Samantha Hall went to the arms rack and carefully screened several Pulse Rifles before finding one that met her standards. Wandering over to an empty table, she set it down and began the process of disassembling it; oiling it and then putting in back together again. While she did so; she unconsciously began humming a reggae tune.

After a few moments, she glanced up and saw some of her fellow marines giving her a strange look, she thought to herself; Aw cripes mon; I went and did it again...starting humming out loud....gotta watch that.... Giving her fellow marines a sheepish grin and shrug of her shoulders, she went back to putting her weapon together.

When she was finished; she glanced around the room and saw only a few familiar faces from the seemingly ages-ago mision to New York and then under the Atlantic ocean. Sensing the tension coming from one end of the room; Sam moved towards the other and noticed a conversation going on between an Asian marine she vaguely remembered from the earlier mission and a smiling marine whose name-tag read; "Rednus". Wandering over; she smiled and said with her faint Carribbean accented voice; "Corporal Kurosaki, isn't it? It's been awhile; how've you been?" She then turne to Rednus; "And Rednus, how do you do? I'm Sam Hall; pleased to meet you"

"Hi Sam" said Rednus, setting aside his now cleaned and completed rifle and offering to shake hands. It wasn't often you saw females in the corps, but Chappell had served with a few and found them to be amazing soldiers, and some of the highest grade snipers around.
"What was that tune you were humming? it seems familiar..."

Turning to Ichigo, he responded "I did a tour with the 'Eight balls' out in Andromeda and after that I was posted back to a few earth assignments with my sarge. So its been a while since my last off-world mission, and I've never been to Mars"
"You?"

<Tag Ichigo>

"And by the way," he said to everyone present, "You can call me Red."
