Kurosaki's Back Story: OPERATION BIOCYTE

Post by Kurosaki, Ichigo » Tue Oct 09, 2012 12:51 pm

*Continued from Kurosaki's mission*

Upon Jones' warning about incoming synthetics, Chan snapped his SMG up to his shoulder.
"Damn Synthetics" Chan growled under his breath, his voice somehow not echoing in the tunnels. The man flipped the safety off, his hands shaking slightly.
Jones adjusted his cheek so that he had a better grip on the rifle. "About fifty meters and closing"
Kurosaki nodded. "Chan, get that door open." He said calmly, his SMG up to his shoulder as well. The last thing they needed was to forget about what their mission objective was and the fact that they could not forget about what Smith had died for.
Chan glared at Kurosaki for a few seconds, debating whether to tell the Sergeant to shove it or actually do his duty. Duty won out; Chan stowed his SMG behind his back and took out his comtech kit.
"I'll need at least 60 seconds Sergeant" Chan whispered, crouching near the lock and beginning to do his magic.
Jones hissed "Forty meters. I'll have a clear shot at twenty meters." Kurosaki understood the flip side; at twenty meters, the synthetics would have full view of the three marines.
Kurosaki thought quickly. "The synthetics are only going to check out what set off the landmine and the sentry gun. By the time they find out what happened, we'll be out of here with the intel we need. "
"Three zero seconds" Chan whispered, his hands almost a blur as he punched in code after code into mainframe. Sweat began to pool at Chan's armpits and back.
"Three five meters and closing Kuro." Jones said, his voice slightly shaky.

Suddenly, a beeping tone came from the door, shattering the eerie silence of the tunnels of the mine. All the marines froze instinctively. Kurosaki took one step back from the door, along with Jones. Chan pressed his ear to the door, as if he was trying to hear if it was breathing.

The door hissed open, revealing a dimly lit mining operations room. The room was fairly large, perhaps the half the size of a gymnasium with a lower ceiling; Jones, the tallest man had only a few inches to spare before he cut his head on the rough rock ceiling. The room was filled with lockers alongside the walls and it was apparent that the lockers had not been used in sometime. The middle of the room had several islands of desks, complete with old computers that had accumulated dust over years of negligence.

Chan snapped his SMG up to his shoulder and peered at the room before entering it. After a few seconds, Kurosaki moved in after Chan, his SMG up to his shoulder. His eyes darted around the room; looking for cameras or any signs that the room had been disturbed.

"Jones, get your ass in here!" Kurosaki whispered. Jones entered the room, his eye still glued to the scope and pointing towards the approaching synthetics. His footfalls made little clouds of dust float up before disappearing in the room air. Chan quickly moved back to the door and grabbed his comtech kit, punching in commands. After a few seconds, the door slowly slid shut giving Chan enough time to disconnect his comtech wires from the door panel.

"Where the hell are we?" Jones asked, removing his eye from the scope and looking around the room. His eyes narrowed at the amount of dust that was present around the workstations.

"Mining Operations Center" Chan replied, walking around the room. "I'm guessing that back when this mine still had something of value in it, this was where the workers put their stuff before heading out to go mining. The computers were operated by the managers to keep in touch with their miners and also probably track how much of the ore they were able to mine out of the caves." He suddenly stopped in front of one of the workstations that was about thirty feet away from the doors.

"Sergeant, there's no dust on this workstation." Chan said carefully, crouching down to closely examine the keyboard. "Or on the keyboard"

"Use the workstation to patch in to BioCyte and take the intel we need. That ways, we can just go home after you're done here. " Kurosaki ordered before walking over to cover the door they had just entered.

Jones had still been looking around and couldn't shake this feeling that something was very wrong. He couldn't put his finger on it though, which was worrying. He had always had a knack for spotting things that were out of the ordinary, but Chan had beaten him to it. A workstation with no dust on it was a dead give away. It was easy for a marine of their caliber...

Chan tapped a few keys experimentally before being rewarded with a lit screen. Using his left glove, he cleared the screen of dust that had somehow gotten onto the monitor. "Weird, you would think they would have cleaned the screen last time they used this." Chan said.

The computer flashed a welcome screen before demanding a password. Chan used his comtech kit for the third time in about five minutes to pry open the motherboard and get his metaphysical hands on the intel they needed.

Shrugging, Jones peered through his scope, hitting the buttons for infra-red and thermal as he pulled the rifle around. Near the door, Kurosaki flipped his SMG to the side, pulling out a small rock that had somehow gotten into his slide.

"Sir, Synthetics are closing in. One-Five meters and closing" Jones said suddenly, crouching so that if they come through the door, they would get a bullet for their troubles.

Kurosaki turned to Chan, who was furiously typing away. "How much time do you need Chan?" Kurosaki asked, his rifle pointing at the door they had just gotten into.

"I'll need about two minutes to get into the files, but I'm not one hundred percent sure when I'll get the intel. Anywhere between five and ten" Chan replied, pausing only to wipe his forehead with his right hand.

It was far too long. They were lucky if they could get five minutes total, Kurosaki thought. "Chan, double time it. Get the data we need don't be too fancy about it. The faster we get the data the quicker we can get the hell out of here! Jones, cover the door. If it opens, you have my permission to fire. "

As soon as Kurosaki stopped speaking, the door began to beep again.

((Thanks!))

"What happened next, Sergeant?"

The voice shook Kurosaki out of his daze. He shook his head twice, as if he was a dog shaking off water before stretching his back. For some reason, the USCM did not give chairs to the marines they were debriefing. Perhaps it was to put them literally off-balance; Kurosaki had nearly fallen over at certain points in the story. Or maybe it was to breed a warrior spirit that no matter what, you must show strength.

It had been two weeks since OPERATION BIOCYTE was completed with mixed results; although Kurosaki had been able to get the intel they had needed (thus completing the mission), his entire squad was killed in the raid. He was here at the debriefing getting reviewed whether to see that the loss of his men were either in fault of his own negligence or just bad luck. The fact that the Corps never believed in luck was not so reassuring.

He was standing in a room, facing three men that were seated behind a desk. The room itself was not that impressive; it was just like any other missions operation room on Gateway. It was well-lit and had maps of the solar systems that the USCM had interest in, as well as a map of Earth. The room also had a large desk, where three chairs could fit with ample room to take notes. This was where they sat.

The lighting was adjust so that Kurosaki could not see their faces; this was done so that the subject was put off balance by not being able to see who they were talking to. Although Kurosaki had no definite proof, he was fairly sure that the man on the far left was none other than Oscar Black, the Company representative that had put him on this mission in the first place.

"Sergeant Kurosaki?" The voice inquired again.

Kurosaki opened his mouth, but Black interjected.

"My op was perfectly planned out. The reason that the operation was a success was due to my planning, not Sergeant Kurosaki's ineptness. I feel that this hearing should be concluded and Sergeant Kurosaki be demoted at least two pay grades."

Yup Kurosaki thought. He's Oscar Black

The figure was on the right turned his head towards Black. Although Kurosaki couldn't see their faces, it was able to discern the movements of the committee.

"Mr. Black, please. You are allowed only to sit on this committee due to Weyland-Yutani's involvement in OPERATION BIOCYTE. However, due to regulations, you are not allowed to talk to the hearee; you are only allowed listen and vote at the end"

The figure in the middle raised his hand.

"Gentlemen please. Mr. Black, Colonel Sato is correct. If you say anything more until the time of the vote, you will be removed from the hearing room. I'm sure that this will have repercussions with your career at Weyland-Yutani"

The figure in the middle lowered his hand.

"Sergeant Kurosaki, what happened after the door was opened?"

Kurosaki closed his eyes briefly and after clearing his throat, began again.

The doors opened, revealing three synthetics that were unarmed. The synthetic on the left opened its mouth in surprise before its whole face disappeared in a mass explosion of white goo. The central one turned to run, before taking a sniper bullet from Jones right in the back.
The right synthetic dove out of the way and by the time Kurosaki closed the distance to the door, all he could hear was the receding sound of the synthetic’s footfalls down the caves. Cursing, Kurosaki examined the synthetics and calmly put one bullet in their neuro-processors to ensure that they were in fact terminated.

Jones ejected the two spent cartridges and reached into his pack for spare bullets. While he reloaded his rifle, his eye was still on the scope, tracking the synthetic’s movements. His right hand toggled between infra-red and thermal in order to get a bigger picture.

Sir, the synthetic is running towards BioCyte’s HQ. I recommend aborting this mission. By now it has raised the alarm and we are going to have BioCyte commandos all over us!

Reloading, Kurosaki shook his head. “In the caves, its impossible to get a clear radio transmission across. That’s why we are unable to communicate with Black and USCM from here.” He moved away from the synthetics’ bodies and walked back toward Chan, his SMG slung across his back.

Sir, the synthetic has gone down to the second sub level. We don’t have much time!” Jones said, his eye firmly pressed to the scope. Beads of sweat rolled down his forehead and dribbled down his gun. It didn’t take much to realize that he was in fact quite nervous about the whole thing.

Chan furiously typed away on the computer, bypassing firewalls and sub-routing codes as with ease. After a few seconds, Chan stopped typing and reached down to his pack to get his cloner, which would allow him to get the data from BioCyte and permanently wipe any trace of the files in the system.

Kurosaki put his hands on the desk and watched Chan’s progress.
Chan, what is your ETA on that data?

Chan pulled out the cloner and wired it up in less than two seconds. He paused before replying, “Six-Zero Seconds sir.

Kurosaki nodded towards the young marine before turning to face Jones. “Jones, ETA on that synthetic?

Jones didn’t respond for a few seconds, allowing Kurosaki to track a single bead of sweat to roll down Jones’ forehead to drip on the ground. Chan continued to type away, getting the data files they needed to complete their mission.

Sir, the Synthetic has reached the HQ and I count at least two squads of commandos heading our way. We have about two minutes to get out of the caves before the whole place is onto us.

Kurosaki bit his lip in frustration. It would take them at least double that in order to get out in time, and that did not factor in the time that Chan needed to get the data.

Chan, get the data and let’s go!” Jones shouted, standing up and removing the rifle from his eye.

Chan nodded and pulled the cloner out of the computer. “All done,” he said with a tired smile.

Kurosaki grinned quickly and snapped up his rifle, pointing it towards the door. Chan handed the cloner over to Kurosaki, who put it in his pocket. Jones moved back towards the door, taking point with his rifle. Kurosaki followed behind him, pausing only to glance at the slain synthetics. Chan brought up the rear, his SMG pointed back towards the mining operations centre.

The tunnels were tough to navigate and without Jones, the team would have been lost almost instantly. The team picked up their pace to a quick trot and headed towards the safety of the open space. Kurosaki began to think it was going to be all right when it went horribly wrong.

Ahead was the place where Smith had been brutally killed by the turret and waiting for them was a synthetic, which cradled an AK-131. Jones fired quickly from the hip, missing the synthetic by a mile.

Take cover!” Jones shouted, firing once more from the hip and catching the synthetic in the stomach. The synthetic noticeably winced before returning fire.

Kurosaki and Chan dove towards the powered down machine gun, taking cover behind it. Kurosaki got up and fired back at the Synthetic, catching it with a burst of bullets to the head. The Synthetic slumped, dropping its rifle with a clatter.

Jones!” Chan said, moving towards the sniper’s inert form. The AK-131 bullets had nearly shredded the poor man’s figure in half, causing Kurosaki to almost chunder. Chan crouched by the fallen soldier and moved his body towards cover, hiding it from sight. Kurosaki nodded at Chan’s initiative.

After a few seconds to get their breath back and have their adrenaline levels go down to the point where their hands weren’t shaking too much, the team moved out again. Kurosaki led Chan through the tunnels. Although Kurosaki did not have the same navigating prowess as Jones did, they were still making good progress.

A shout from Chan alerted Kurosaki that they were being followed by a small group of commandos, who opened fire. Chan quickly went prone and returned fire, hitting several of the commandos. Kurosaki crouched and fired twice, catching the leader in the face. The remaining commandos, which numbered less than the fingers on Kurosaki’s hand remained in cover. Kurosaki turned and ran down the tunnel that would take them to freedom while Chan fired at the cowering commandos.

Kurosaki turned and was about to shout for Chan to follow him when a commando poked his rifle from around the bend and blindly fired. Bullets ricocheted everywhere and Chan screamed in pain for a few seconds before going silent. Kurosaki ducked instinctively and walked backwards, firing as he did so.

His entire team was down, Kurosaki thought to himself as he finally made it out of the tunnels. The men under his command had lost their lives for packets of intelligence data that a rival corporation had.

Eagle Seven, this is Kilo One. Requesting extraction.” Kurosaki said into his radio as he ran to the pre-arraigned extraction point.

Roger Kilo One. Eagle Seven is inbound.” The laconic voice of the drop ship pilot filtered through Kurosaki’s ear piece.

Kurosaki, did you get the data files?” Black’s annoying voice cut through as Kurosaki ran towards the extraction point, which was behind the large cedar tree.

Kurosaki didn't answer immediately, concentrating on the fact that it was Black’s stupid mission plan that got his men killed in the first place.

The drop ship beat the sprinting marine to the point by about three seconds; as soon as Kurosaki strapped himself in, the drop ship lifted off.

The door to the cockpit opened and Black walked to the troop bay and was not surprised to see Kurosaki alone. He sat directly across Kurosaki with his hand outstretched.

Pausing for a few seconds, Kurosaki reached in his pocket and pulled out the cloner. Kurosaki looked at it for a few seconds. Was it worth the lives of his men? Was the feud between BioCyte and Weyland-Yutani really that important? The cloner was so small and seemed insignificant but yet the data on the cloner held important data.

The cloner was placed into Black’s hands before Kurosaki closed his eyes.

While this wasn't exactly where I was going with the solo-missions for Kurosaki way back when I was running the short-lived 'Invictus' campaign; I must say; these are a lot of fun to read! I echo Nick's comment: Keep 'em coming! :)

Gateway Station
His career was over .
It was the only thing that was crossing Kurosaki’s mind as he sat outside of the hearing room on the bench. The room he was ordered to wait in was small and could have been a jail cell; it had a bench, a small window that overlooked Earth and a toilet that looked battered and unusable. He had been more or less shoved into the room by two guards who looked like they hated their posting. After he was inside the room, one of the guards activated the door, which slid shut and was transparent, which only added to Kurosaki’s discomfort that he was being viewed as some sort of animal.

Kurosaki put his head into his hands and bit back the urge to shout in frustration. The op was a complete mess; any marine could tell you that. They were given civilian-grade weapons and armor, which was woefully inadequate; if they had been given the standard load out, Chan would most likely still be alive and hacking away on his cloner. The fact that they were given a near-impossible and suicidal mission to complete and managed to complete the mission parameters was nothing more of a miracle.

Not for the first time, Kurosaki wondered what his former squad mates were up to; he had been pulled from an active mission and he hoped that all of them had made it. Him and the squad had gone through a lot together and Kurosaki considered them as equal family on par with his younger brother James. They had fought together against everything the galaxy had thrown at them; from irate colonists to full-blown corporate commandos to…

Even thinking about them caused Kurosaki to shiver. The mission to the science labs on St. John was seen as something completely normal; the science team had not responded to contact and the men of the USCM were called in to re-establish contact. It turned out to be a massive Xenomorph operation that Weyland-Yutani had been running for the sake of a few credits.

Kurosaki stood and cracked his back. He had been waiting for his fate for nearly an hour; he could imagine Black arguing that since the op was ‘foolproof’, Kurosaki’s perceived incompetence was at fault. Therefore, Kurosaki should be dishonorably discharged or moved to some backwater base to help train new recruits. The fact that it took this long gave Kurosaki some hope that Colonel Sato and the General were on his side.

The two guards suddenly straightened from the chairs and snapped to attention. Kurosaki looked and was surprised to see Colonel Sato just outside of his glass door. The glass muffled some of the sound, but Kurosaki could still somewhat hear what was going on outside.

Sir, it is against protocol to go in there! ” one of the guards said, standing to block Sato’s entrance. The other guard reached for his side arm with a shaky right hand. His left hand was on his radio, with his left index finger just centimeters away from the panic button.

Sato stared at the guard who had just spoken. Although Sato was pushing five foot six inches, he seemed to somehow get taller and dwarf the guard. To the guard’s credit, he did not back down from his post in front of the door; his shift buddy on the other hand, swallowed noticeably and his hands shook to a point where it was almost a blur.

The man that you are holding has a decorated service record that both of you combined will never achieve. I suggest that if you would like to continue to have a career in the military, you let me pass and talk to Sergeant Ichigo Kurosaki alone. If you do not let me through, I can get you transferred to postings that are far worse than Gateway.

Sato did not have to shout the words; he merely spoke them and they carried power. The guard in front of the door nodded once and walked past Sato without a second look. The other guard paused for a few seconds, long enough for Sato to give him a withering look. The guard snapped at attention and meekly mumbled something that was muffled by the door and left the room, nearly tripping over his chair in the process.

The doors slid open and Sato stepped inside the room. Kurosaki snapped at attention, which Sato waved off quite quickly. Kurosaki relaxed and sat down on the bench. Sato grabbed one of the chairs that the guards were using and sat directly opposite of Kurosaki in the cell.

Sato was not tall nor physically imposing nor even exude the air of a war hero, but he had many ribbons of conflicts that Kurosaki had never seen before. Sato’s age was difficult to place, but the earliest ribbon on his chest was the Tokushima Campaign, which was aimed at driving out the remaining rebels from the ag-world of Tokushima; the campaign had been nearly twenty years ago, so Sato was at least in his forties.

You’ll have to excuse me Ichigo, but my Japanese skills are not up to par as you might think; I grew up in Sol speaking English and didn’t learn Japanese until I was twenty-five. ” Sato said, calmly folding his fingers into a pyramid. His accent was similarly hard to place, but then again, Kurosaki always had a hard time placing accents from Sol.

Kurosaki nodded graciously. “ That is not a problem sir. I grew up on the ag-world of Toyama in the Japan Systems and learned English at Pioneer school as a young army cadet.

Sato smiled quickly, showing no teeth whatsoever. “ Good. You must be wondering why I am here?

Kurosaki nodded. Like the guards had said, it was against protocol and several USCM laws for one of hearing judges to talk to the hearee without the other two judges present. It would be highly unlikely that Sato was just here to chitchat.

Sato stood and peered out the window towards Earth, saying nothing for what seemed an eternity. Kurosaki kept himself amused by twiddling his thumbs.

The hearing is not going well for you Sergeant; Black seems to have a personal vendetta against you and General Robertson is quite indifferent to your plight. I may be your only hope to salvage your career.

“The fact that you lost 75% of your squad is inexcusable and alone merits your discharge. Corporals Jones, Chan and Smith were considered the brightest to come out of the Academy on Crysalis and yet you threw their lives away without thinking of their true worth.

Kurosaki’s hands clenched into fists; if Sato noticed he did not say or do anything that indicated he did.

Sergeant Kurosaki, I come here offering you a lifeline; a chance to salvage your career if you will ” Sato turned away from the window to look at Kurosaki.

I don’t have much of a choice, do I? ” Kurosaki said, in a smaller voice than he wanted to.

Sato shrugged. “ You could just say no and be discharged. In all honesty, your skill set is far too valuable for the USCM to lose.

Kurosaki shrugged. “ Why don’t you tell that to Black and Robertson then? That would make my life much easier.

Sato smiled sagely, as if Kurosaki was particularly slow and finally got the point. “ I will; Black does not know about half the missions you have been on. Seriously, more than half of your file is covered in black ink; there’s barely a coherent sentence in the report.

“For security purposes, I cannot tell you what your mission is so if you have to accept it before I tell you the complete details. Sounds backward I understand, but this is the only way.

Kurosaki hated to think it, but Sato had a point. He would have to take the proposal, or be discharged and go back home to Toyama and farm with his family on the plot. The whole reason he took the recruiter’s offer of Army life was to be able to leave Toyama and never look back.

Kurosaki looked in Sato’s eyes and nodded.
