there are things like roll20 that have map makers built in. You just have the campaign closed, and just make maps, screen cap, even have tokens to rep marines.

Sketchup might be a good way to have a more detailed type of map, they have a viewer program kind of like an adobe reader for folks that don't want to create, but just want to view so they have a better idea about their surroundings.
If that seems a little too time consuming, then maybe something similar to the character upload link, where pictures, jpgs, etc could be posted to paint a good picture of the scene and what's going on.
