The site, the game, the future (Don't worry)

Post by Nick » Tue Mar 11, 2014 8:30 am

Hello players, lurkers and GM!

No I am not going anywhere and no this site will not be closed for the forseeable future!

The reason for the title was to catch your interest, admittedly, but I felt this was important. I want to get your inputs on how to improve this site. Things are looking a little brighter on the work front for me, at least for the time being - So I might (yeah might) have some time to put into the site - I am looking for an open discussion here, no promises but just a gauge, to see what you feel about the site, the game and the future.

For example:
What can be improved to make the site a boost to the game experience?

What can be improved to make Pale Riders life as GM easier?

What can we do to make sure the game survives for another 10 years?

But these questions are just examples - Anything goes here!

I like the overall format, I just wish we had a GM's guide for rolling, etc. And there may still be one. I know back in '06-'08 we worked on a lot of stuff. And I am not in anyway advocating a change of the current system (YET >:D).

What I would like to do is develop a system for awarding Experience Points that can be used for two things:
1. Leveling Up Abilities and Skills
2. Determining Ranks

Overall though this group has been very easy to work with, RL can occasionally sideline me but I am always checking in and when able I can post on my cellphone. The latest delay was simply me doing research for the question Dirk asked of the Weyland-Yutani technician.

Do we still have the capacity for a chatting feature? Or is this group not active enough to warrant one?

haven't been back long enough to warrant much advice. But chat features tend to be more work than they're worth. With a group like this, with different schedules, PM's are actually much better.
Salazar 'Salamander' Boothe: 'Private', 'Medic', 'Marine'.
Load out: As Turn Two of Watch Dog
Pulse Rifle: Clip loaded +4 on person.
1 Field Surgery Kit
3 First aid Kits
4 smoke grenades
Breather Mask.

We have had a chat function, not hugely populated I might add. If enough people want it we can have it again - But I rather you use MSN or some other program as they are more secure - I am not sure I want to link user database with a third party program unless I have to...

Pale Rider - You have the rulebook, right? Can't remember but I think I sent it to you. (For those new here we use the Aliens Adventure Game rule book, looooooong out of print and quite pricey these days. But I do have a e-version of both that and the Colonial Marines Technical manual. The latter is also hard to find and pricey. PM me for access.)

I guess I could write a GM guide together with you Pale. There are rules on how to handle experience in the rule book if I am not misstaken (have not opened it for a while).

One suggestion is a read only logfile in a separate thread where you publish rolls and results and then use that for experience. The thread can be invisible or visible and read only, your choice.

jd2035 (I think is his name) needs his account added to the approved character - Which will feed into my first point.

1. Give the Moderators the ability to change membership permissions (At least Pale Rider). At times Nick can become very busy. And every once in a while that comes in alignment with a new member who cannot get activated and play.

2. As always I advise mass advertising campaign - yes revamping the old video may be a good idea. - I may work on it myself as soon as I get the time (Which may be in a couple of weeks) - A policy should just be to send out an email every time the mission turns over.

3. To help maintain a strong gameplay interest, I recommend keeping familiar themes that fall within the boundary of Alien-Aliens-Alien 3. Environment also falls in this category. But keeping to the feel of these films is paramount to our world, as well as the equipment. While I have access to a large amount of Aliens expanded material, many of our people do not and don't have a reference of some of what they're looking at. Especially the newer people, example the Snakefighter vs. use of a Conastoga- (This will likely be a debate for the site as a whole, which I may present separately - but I just wanted to note it).

Really good suggestions Morse!

I have edited Pale Riders permissions as I write. Hw can now add new players to the players groups.

Yes I remember the video. That's what brought me to the site originally. Got chills watching it again.

I am on vacation for a little over a week so the game will have to wait unless pale rider can take over for a bit. I wait the whole year to get up here and I can't waste a second of it. Sorry for the delay!
