Colonial Marines film

Post by Dugan » Tue Sep 30, 2008 4:27 am

I came across this while checking out news on the upcoming Colonial Marines game. It seems that someone is trying to make a new film based on the Colonial Marines fighting Aliens in a mine:

Theres a teaser trailor which TBH looks a little dissapointing, why people insist on filming against a crappy blue screen instead of on location is beyound me? CGI just doesn't cut it for me.

I've got to wait for a couple of days before my internet connection gets fast enough again for me to watch the trailer.  Currently I think this could be a cool idea, but it depends on their execution I guess.

Because it costs peanuts these days. CGI is so stupidly cheap that traveling to and fro- with all the equipment and people needed to film, is an expense that many producers find unnecessary.

Computer-technology has developed a tad fast in this respect. The FX from the first Jurassic park, or the Second (and first!) Terminator movie can be reproduced on your average home PC these days, at very little cost- I'd say 50-500$. When those movies were made, that stuff cost millions.

It's sad, really.

My favorite movie and book are made from cheaply, middle ground CGI effects? ??? I think not >:(. I will not accept hat even though Jurrasic pack was  special affect phenomina for its time, i dont think it has goten to the point where it's that cheap. Terrminator maybe, it's an older movie than Jurrasic park.  But i will not accept The first Jurasic parks CGI and special affects cheap even today.  The other two movies had crappier "Special Effects" if you ask me.  And they were supposed to be using top notch stuff ;). I don't mean this to be biased, but its my favorite movie ever, and my more favorite book.  I really love it that much.  :-[
cant wait for the new game :)

I didn't just pull those numbers out of my ass: I did take some film and cinematography classes in college.

So feel free to not accept that all you want, but ask yourself why there are games released for computer and console today that looks better then the dinos in the first Jurassic Park movie?

;D

Yeah once I start making films I'm going to be all about the CGI!  Out of interest anybody know any good video editing software that's available free?

Well the best editing packages are Avid and Final Cut Pro. But Final Cut Pro is Mac only. As luck would have it there is a cut down free version of Avid DV Xpress available:

http://download.chip.eu/en/Avid-Free-DV ... 01934.html

Not sure what bits are missing from the retail version but i'm downloading it now too.  :P

Update:
Just installed it and you need to add in these when prompted:

Serial Number: AvidFreeDV-31E3

Authorization Code: AF7R-XJ5C-UC7K-552H-KE7Q
