Nice.

I am planning to take a trip to Normandy next or the year after that. Being a World War II fetischist I want to visit the Omaha beach, but first I have a few Eastern front places I want to visit.

I have several bookshelfes filled to the brim with world war II literature - I am also a reference person to the online game World War II online and help them with material to their in game units.

Have a good trip Erika.

I didn't know you had a fetish Nick?

I've got a fetish too but mine involves Peggy Bundy the mother from the eighties/nineties TV show 'Married with Children' and lots of whipped cream.  Probably not you were talking about though... :P

I think I hear DOOMDICE!

Erika, as a career officer, I thought you knew the golden rule of military service; "Never volunteer"?  ;D

Or did someone tell you that you were now a volunteer?  ;)

I did not volunteer, I got volunteered... I got a call from the cabinet of the Chief of staff of the Air Force saying that they needed some people speaking several languages fluently and they asked me if I was volunteer... ;D ;D ;D In such cases it is not possible to say "No, sir" since when you sign you are volunteer...

In any case, it had been very interesting and I had the chance to sleep in the same hotel as the delegation... a wonderful Palace hotel... worthwhile... ;)

That's neat. I had always wanted to go. Several of my family members where involved in WWII. One of my uncles served in Manchuria during the Second Sino-Japan war 1937-1945. He was evacuated after he was injured by the Kai-shek nationalists. Another of my uncles served as a seaman and helped Admiral Togo defeat the Russian Navy in 1905. He died in 1944 in Toyama firebombings. The last uncle was a hibakusha in Hiroshima. He died of cancer nearly 25 years ago.

That is very interesting!

What are the Japense views of World War II today?

My little country (Sweden) stayed out of World War II and did not suffer anyway near any of what Japan did during WW2.

Sweden did however participate somewhat in the Winter War in Finland 1939, un-officially of course. We sent one third of our air force over to help Finland against the Russians - Marked with the skull and crossbones (Pirate!) when they flew over to hide the fact from the Russians. They shot down a few planes and lost some themselves.

Sweden also had many volunteers fighting - Most in Finland against Russia where we had whole regiments. But with the Allies and Axis as well...

The 101st Army Screaming Eagles played a big part. In US partcipation also the 82nd all american and the big red one are just many of the infantry units in WWII. Its all great history here in the USA all vets are respected and loved here in the US even thought some of them are still unsung. I recently met a Pearl Harbor survivor on a train got to talk to him. He was stationed on the USS Arizona and managed to make it out. He didn't want to talk about it much because he strung memories. But I respect all war vets from all different countries that partcipated in the war. I also watched a reunion with some American Soldiers and Japanese soldiers meeting for the first time united and not on different sides trying to kill eachother. It was heartwarming and a good thing to watch on TV.

Japan has very different views about WW2, especially the manchuria conflict. The Japanese had several units (Unit 731, for example) that exterminated the chinese and koreans much like hitler did. the japanese people do not believe that, while the chinese did. just a couple of years ago, the small amount of koreans and chinese were agitated when the school textbooks said that it never happened. there were riots.
