Lights in the Sky and Rumbles in the Night

Date: 10th November, 2080AD, 16:45UT
Location: Vier, Near Karlstadtneu
Operation: Zenus Mishap
Mission timer: 15:30

The Colonial Marines quickly established their camp for the night within the perimeter of the farmstead fence. Each of the marines was assigned guard duty; they were to walk the fence line in pairs. The first five hours of the thirteen hour night were uneventful, but this would change rather quickly, Lance Corporal Alexander and Sergeant Honeysett were the pair assigned the current detail. As they worked their way around the south side of the farmstead the sky to the east lit up, the sounds of the explosions following closely behind the light show.

Weapons fire can be heard carrying on the wind, evidence of someone firing off a great deal of ammunition to the southeast. The three dogs come tearing from out of the farmhouse, barking at the noise, there tails tucked between their tails. The Kreutzes family comes out the door shortly after the dogs, and stares off to the southeast, the skyline flashing faintly in the distance. “Gott in Himmel! It sounds like there is a war at Kalkstadtneu!â€

Looking around him, Jacob span in a now trademark circle, aiming up and down so on every turn or 2 Jacob had covered every 360 angle around him. He had seen the blood-prints, and now was thinking about it while covering himself...

"Morrisson? Reckon we should split squads and one crew go the farm and snoop...the other crew follow the tracks? Who knows, maybe we'll meet up!

(edit: OOC: Good point Con, Chuck, roll on all the relevant skills I have!)

Con's head was still throbbing from the blow he had taken at the farm and coupled with the fear of seeing those creatures again, he felt as if he might throw up.
Pulling out his small flask Con took a gulp of the alcohol inside shook his head and began searching. He flicked down his infra red sight on his helmet and began scanning the area for anything that could give an indication of what had happened.

While he was searching Con called out to Abbot, “Is anything showing up on the motion tracker?â€

Morrison had his rifle up at shoulder level, aiming down the deserted street.
To him, it was clear that they where dealing with some type of scavengers, since everything edible was gone.

"Alright people, IR on, we'll follow the bloodtrail. Double column by squads, Jones, Abott- get mounted. Abott, keep your APC to the rear. Now hustle!" Morrison barked over the comnet.

As they started moving, Morrison tuned his radio to the dropship: "Harvard, Diaz- get your asses up! Dustoff and hover at grid X44.97 Y23.48- copy. Prepare for CAS. Unknown hostiles may be in the area. Tell me what's going on over there. If everything is fine, then just provide overwatch. clear?"

Walking next to the front APC, Morrison kept a sharp outlook for any kind of movement, his rifle held high, ready to fire in a split-second. Looking down at the footprints, one thought flashed through Morrison's head: Where's James when you need him...

Altair had spent the first part of the night patrolling the perimeter of the farmhouse along with Tarik. The boy expected something to happen but hour after hour silently passed and still there was nothing out of ordinary apart from few noises made by the local night creatures. Deciding to take a nap Altair spent another half an hour to try and get some sleep but none came. It was at the point when the boy was about to give up the whole notion, the fireworks have started. Taking his pulse rifle, the boy quickly collected few belongs he had and joined others on the south side of the farm.

Upoun arriving in walled town and finding the action was over, James was not sure if he was feeling regret or relief. He was absorbed in his on thoughts about what could have done this when the order was made to check the motion finder. It took a few seconds for the request to register.

Fumbling for the device he should have already had out and on, "Ahmm..checking now." James flips on the motion finder halfway hoping to find nothing out of the ordinary. "The finder is showing...

Joe was shaking from a mixture of excitement and fear from the sight of such carnage around him. Joe flipped down his IR on and fell in step next to the APCs. His eyes were wide open and his full attention was on his surroundings as he waited to hear if the motion trackers had picked up anything...

"Daddys Home" Julie Khan cried out Tarik beamed with pride to see his father home early. As he ran to the door to jump up and hug him the expression of his fathers face changed after the loud burst that shot through his chest. Tariks face covered with the inards and blood of his father. Everything fell silent as his father colapsed to his knees. The silence was soon replaced by shreiking of his mother. " Run Riki...get out of here.." his fathers last words. As a boot apeared on his fathers shoulder and shoved the man down on his face Tarik could see the dark figure again. His mothers shreiking was soon silenced with another loud burst. Tarik ran as fast as he could out the back door and away from this evil man behind him a silohette of fire and death.

The APC hit a large pothole and shook Tarik back into reality. He looked around everyone seemed rather tense. The APC came to a hault a few moments later, and the Marines piled out the door. Tarik switched his eyepiece down as ordered and took position in case support fire was needed. His actions almost mechanical in nature, he had run so many drills similar to this in boot camp. He was lucky enough he had this muscle memory to fall back on. For at this moment Khan wasn't able to tell if he was still dreaming or not everything looked exactly the same.

All the Marines of the 9th Platoon searched the area high and low, nothing was found, no sign of ambush, life, or for that matter food materials. The only thing left laying around were rifles, handguns, and spent casings. The bloody trail was the only evidence of life having existed at this time and place.
The Motion detectors showed a faint signal at the outer edge of its range. This pointed the marines in the northwest direction.

"All clear, Wrench standying by." Tarik reported in to Jones. He kept his head on a swivel trying to locate an angle of possible attack as well as defensive postions that could come in handy. He didn't see anyone or anything at this point it was a ghost town with a hell of a story to tell.

Khan noticed his grip on his weapon and loosened up a little. Ease up there killer.. He twisted his head to the sides and popped his neck.

"Hey kid what the hell you doing?" Tarik barked at Altair. Khan knew exactly what Altair was doing but he was trying to hint to him. If you have a motion sensor in your good hand you sure as hell better keep that Pulse rifle in your offhand.
Khan's look said it all.

Walking next to the front APC, Morrison kept a sharp outlook for any kind of movement, his rifle held high, ready to fire in a split-second. Looking down at the footprints, one thought flashed through Morrison's head: Where's James when you need him...

The footprints continued on into the deepening night, the absence of artificial light makes trailing the footprints harder as they begin to blend in with the shadows. The only task making it so easily to follow is the sheer fact that whatever is making the prints is making no attempt to hide them. Grass is trampled down, the numbers almost staggering. A fresh trail leads in from the west, merging into and with the mass exodus that is heading almost perfectly due northwest.

The head lights of the APCs show trees pushed over and rocks displaced as if moved by a rushing river, in this case the river is living flesh and bone. Morrison bent down and examined a clearing before him. A quick count points to some fifty animals passed through the clearing. Hoof prints intermixed with the prints of whatever turned Kalkstadtneu into a Ghost Town.

Sergeant Honeysett looked over at the indicator and realized they had traveled close to two kilometers. Crossing over a small rise in the ground, and into a depression; Morrison quickly motions for the men to halt. Scrambling out of the APCs, ever alert the Marines take in a sight of sheer madness. Everything that had been heading this way and the trail that they had left behind ended abruptly. Freshly torn soil, lay piled around a hole in the bedrock before them. The opening measured fifteen meters by fifteen meters.

...peering into the hole, Jacob wished he still had the Night Vision goggles that he'd taken off that person in the last mission...still, he'd sold them for a tidy sum on the market...You win some you lose some...

lighting a cigarette in a cupped hand, Jacob walked forward to peer into the hole. The pitch black of the hole in the ground seemed never ending...and for a brief moment Jacob envisioned thousands of clawed chitinous aliens rushing to the entrance of the hole to drag him in and kill him in thousands of ways each more painful than the last...

Dropping his cigarette he audibly gasped and took several steps backwards, and sunk to his knees, putting his head in his hands, trying to remove the image from his mind...though before he turned away, had he noticed that the hole seemed to narrow slightly, was this the entrance to a network of tunnels?

After a moment or 2 he arose and stumbled back to the APC and to Morrisson and Con

"I...don't think...we should go in there...not tonight...what we faced before...I'm not facing a black foe in a blacker place...I don't want to die just yet...look at the back of the cave thing - it narrows down, I'm not walking into a bottleneck..." He tried to laugh, but his mouth was too dry.

leaning against the APC he lit another cigarette and turned to aim his pulse rifle down the hole...just in case, though if you looked closely you could see his hands were tremoring slightly...

Con nodded, his mind racing, why was it that every time he went on a mission there was always something around that was trying to kill him? He knew this was the army but even on the training mission some group tried to blow him up.
"I don’t know guys" he said to Honeysett and Morrison "all I know is this place doesn't feel right and if we camp here today, I am defiantly sleeping in one of the APCs, if we have to camp out here I doubt any of us will wake up tomorrow.â€

Fucking idiots said Ronald loudly, clearly meaning his drinking and smoking teammates, he wiped his forehead with a piece of cloth and sighed loudly, he hated the amataurs and how everyone ran around like ants, the whole missiong seemed more like a suicide mission where they had taken all the madmen around and threw them here.

He took up his pistol, taking out all bullets but one, he looked over at Jacob and Constantine and while no one looked he put the gun to his head, closing his eyes, thinking for a bit before he fired, though the gun said click and Ronald looked suprised at the gun. Saying loudly "holy shit... It was a dud..." The gun still aimed against his temple.
