Space is no place for a person with a fear of wide open places. And yet space was the final location for humanity’s last hope. One such location was known as the Zenus Cluster. It was composed of 6 planets that circled around the local red star known as a Zenae. The Zenus Cluster was discovered in 2065 by explorers for the Winn Crest Agricultural Corporation in their quest for new planets to help provide food and medicinal sources for the Sol system and their colonists. The explorers were composed largely by a German extension of the company and led by Johannes Zenu. Thus they named the system in honor of their commander. Unfortunately their imagination was not very broad as they ended up naming the planets numerically from that point on. The fourth planet in the system is on the records as Zenus Vier. Off the records most everyone simply calls the planet Vier. It is this system that finds the Marines of the Delta Dogs arriving. Abbot was fresh from the Weyland-Yutani assembly lines having been commissioned as soon as the USCM had realized they were in need of a new synthetic man to serve on the USS Fidanza as its chief Medical Officer and Science Officer. Abbot had spent the flight out to the Zenus cluster studying the files of the newly minted Delta Dogs. He preferred that personal touch as opposed to being programmed with the information.
Three hours out from making orbit around Vier, Abbot had awakened the ship from is dormant state, he had turned on the scrubbers to clear the foul air out of the ship since there had been no atmosphere to maintain during the past two months of interstellar travel. Also a necessity for mammalian life forms was a comfortable temperature. The process would take almost two hours before the ship would be heated from its freezing temperature of -25 degrees Celsius. When Abbot recognized the ship was nearing 21.6 degrees Celsius he started the process of reviving his charges. He noticed that one charge in particular was showing signs of an accelerated heartbeat and brainwave patterns; he lightly tapped the screen and pulled up the readout of the marine whose rhythms were changing. The built in monitor showed his face to be contorting in strange ways. Abbot attempted to access his memory chips, but was unable to find anything to relate to him the process the marine known as Tarik Khan. He would make certain to question the male further concerning this occurrence. He set the timer to revive all of the marines except for LT Morrison within the hour. The LT would be awakened first so that he could be briefed on the previously unrevealed mission briefing.

Morrison was not in the best of moods. Getting nudged awake by an "artificial person" a good hour before the rest of the platoon did not make him happy.

Just because the brass didn't have the brains to brief us a gateway! he thought, sourly.

Since he was in charge, and since he did not beleive in certain points of marine corps regulations, Morrison was out of uniform- not only was his boots not shined- they were untied, his shirt was not tucked in, and the coffee cup in his hand was a gift from his fiancee; The caption on it read: "I'm surrounded by fuckin' idiots!".
His newly found rank had impressed her more then it had him.

After five minutes of drinking what passed for coffee here and smoking a cigar, whilst staring into the bulkhead, he made his way to the command central.

Green, blue and amber lights danced over his face as he sipped at the crap that the auto-chef had brewed, and puffing on his cigar- the latter to help him get that nasty taste out of his mouth.

Incursions... security.... southern hemisphere... weird wildflife... Grow- funny... agricultural... he wrinkled his brow ...seems like pretty standard FP... meeting with the chief of security... maybe some patrolwork...

"Hey Abbot!" he called over the intercom "I'll be down in the freezer shortly. Begin the revival process when I get there." Morrison said in his flat radiovoice.

Morrison sighed, and thought about the mission ahead as he walked back to the cryo-chamber.

I hate it when they make things seem simple.

Sitting upright and letting his feet touch the floor, Jacob winced slightly - he hated the initial cold. Still, it was better than the floor being too hot...

Getting up, Jacob - slowly at first - as his limbs became used to the movement again, got into his battle dress - his armour, everything but his helmet which he carried loosly by the strap at his side.

It felt odd, Nick wasn't shouting at him...the LT wasn't female...Jim wasn't there, neither was Bojan with his book.

Still - now he had the 3 chevrons on his arm - he was a sergeant...who'd have thought? One, for want of a better word, training mission as a squad leader and now suddenly he was a sarge.

It felt good, really good!

He walked along - seeing the marines murmering to life...

Grinning he decided to give his first command as a sarge

"All of you dressed and ready in 5...then you can eat, the waking better remind the sleeping when they wake up." He called - hoping they'd hear him.

He wandered off and got a coffee...he put an inch or 2 of sugar in and a fair bit of milk and drained it off.

Next he lit a cigarette and inhaled deeply, after 2 or 3 drags he felt the nicotine rush through his body. He became giddy for a few moments and sat down to finish the fag off. Getting up he smiled at anyone else who'd woken up.

Lighting another cigarette he leant against a wall and slid to the floor. Sitting in a corner of the cold room. he looked at his armour, a lot of the smily faces had been washed away in the rain of that last 'training' mission. Still, there were a few there - daubed in blood, almost black now with age. Jacob refused to wash his armour, he had done at boot camp - in his first outfit...luckily they never asked him to here. His armour was his talisman of good luck. He ran his finger across the dent and crack where he'd been hit in his first mission with the easy eights. and then looked at the other crack on his helmet.

Looking up he heard footsteps, and he made a guess at who it might be

"What up LT?...you heard what this mission's about yet?" he called, raising his voice slightly

Slowly rising from the Cryo tube Con looked around, wincing at the harsh light blazing above him. Quickly getting his barings Con surveyed his surroundings, the ship looked exactly the same as the one assign to the easy eights that he was so used to but this one had a slight feeling of not quite home.

Looking around Con noticed his old squadleader, Jacob Honeysett, sitting in a corner staring at his armour. Walking over Con sat next to him patting him on his arm.

"So Sarge how does it feel to have kissed enough ass to get your self to this level?" Con said with a smile. "Although i'm not that much better" he continued fingering his single chevron that indicated himself as a Lance Corporal and a squad leader

"and lets just hope this batch is up to marine standards"

Con stood back up, pulled out his uniform and quickly dressed, he also pulled out his combat knife which he put in his boot sheath and his new pistol, which he had recieved for becoming a squad leader. Searching through his foot locker he also pulled out a bottle of some nameless alcahol he had spent an age perfecting to be potent and not burn holes in the back of your throat. Taking a sip out of the bottle Con pushed this also into his webbing as well as some home made chocolate bars and some jerky.

Standing up Con spat on his boots shined them quickly on the back of his pants leg, pulled out a pair of aviator sunglasses, slipped them on to his face and walked off to go get some breakfast and a brief before he met his new squad.

Joseph Harmon sat up, rubbed the blurriness from his eyes, and shook off a small headache. "Cryosleep is the worst sleep I've ever had," he muttered to himself.
"All of you dressed and ready in 5...then you can eat, the waking better remind the sleeping when they wake up."
Joe hurriedly got dressed in his gear. Not sure of what was expected, he put everything on... boots, armor, and even helmet. His boots were still shiny, his uniform still had creases, and his armor could almost be used as a mirror. It was easy to see that his equipment was new, and Joe was as green as they got. Joe looked over to some of the now waking soldiers and said, "Sarge said we got five minutes to get dressed, then we can eat," and then left to find the food.

Joe followed the smell of cigarettes, which led him to Sgt Jacob and the coffee.
Getting up he smiled at anyone else who'd woken up.
Joe smiled back, "Morning, sir," and then realized that particular greeting had little meaning out here in space. Joe smiled again nervously and nodded his head in a small bow of respect then turned to get a cup of coffee. As Joe made his coffee, he heard footsteps enter the room accompanied by the heavy aroma of a cigar. It was Lieutenant Morrison.

Joe didn't smoke, but he loved the smell of cigars. His father smoked them all the time, and the smell reminded him of a little bit of home. Joe poured some cream in his coffee. Then while the Lieutenant and Sarge talked, he stood there stirring his coffee and eavesdropping hoping he might find something out about what he could expect from his first mission.

Sitting up with a pain in his jaw Jones wakes himself up. Unlike a lot of the marines he still had his BDU bottoms on and his shin guards. Pulling out his boots he left in the bottom of his tube he puts them on the floor. Slipping into the cold leather rather onto the cold floor made him feel more awake. Standing up he pulled his shirt from underneath the small pseudopillow and slipped it on. Opening his cargopocket hepulled out one of his cigars and from a chest pocket a lighter.

His old basic drill sergent wouldn't of approved. Cigars were to be smoked in victory not at the start of the day. But after his first mission Gavin learned the important lesson no time like the present. Standing up and running in place for a second he got his body warmed up a bit.

Tucking his shirt in he began walking down the aisle in front of the tubes. The nasty scar of where a bullet had almost taken his jaw off still a bit puffy not fully healed yet. "Up and attem men it time to do our job! So get up and get wired boys and girls! It another glorious day in the corp and I want you bunch of badasses moving!"

Putting action to words he turned with a fine bit of military presision and headed to the lockers. Opening his locker he pulled out his gear on the door was a few pictures of his family and his time in boot. Going through the motions of getting dressed he put his belt and pack on last. Unlike the rest of the squad Jones was commtech. His belt almost seemed overloaded with cables and oversized pouches holding different instruments. His pack alittle larger than standard had the comm gear in it. Strapping down all the articles on his belt, an impressive act upon itself, he walked back to the cryotubes.

The men were still trying to get their bearings and the heads on straight. But for Jones they just hadn't done it fast enough. Imitating the tone of voice of his old drill sergeant. "Goddammit you little miscreants get your asses up and get in gear! And when I say Gear I mean GEAR clothes armor and packs! And by all that holy in this corp if you aren't ready in five I will make you WALK HOME! NOW MOVE IT MAGGOTS!" With that he stood off to the side glowering at any who thought about protesting. He knew he was a scary man now with that nasty scar. In his armor he was scarier for his armor had been patched up not replaced. The discoloration of where five bullet impacts were quite apparent in the harsh lighting of the ship.

Turn 1 The Awakening

Post by Altair » Fri Mar 16, 2007 3:56 pm

The boot camp was finished, it took Altair a couple of days to get in shape after an argument he had with a log, thanks to the mortar shell, which landed not too far from him. The graduation day at the boot camp, turned out to be a memorable day, the first part of it anyway. Despite their misgivings about the marines Altair’s parents had arrived to congratulate their only son. His fiancé wasn’t there and Altair was more than sure that the weeding they had planned was not going to happen. At the end of the day, his parents continued to fight the never ending battle of trying to persuade the boy to come back home, but despite the onslaught Altair stood his ground, eventually the argument escalated, and both of his parents left angry at their son.

After a few days most of the recruits were transferred to the appropriate battalions, all of them ending up all over the know space. Altair, Tarik and Huey ended up in the same battalion, as well as regiment, from there Huey went to 8th platoon and himself and Tarik joined the 9th. “The Delta Dogs” or the “Hell Hounds” as it was called by some of the marines, was a new platoon and thus the transition went smoothly. Some of the men had served together before that and mostly two groups – the new guys and the old guys, tried to stay apart. Altar was glad that Tarik ended up with him, new surroundings and faces made the boy a bit nervous.

The other thing that made him nervous was the cryo tubes. Just one look at them stirred up memories of the medical reports he read, reports of people, who had died due to the malfunction of tubes. Shuddering, the boy had no choice but to undress and climb inside the free pod, next to his friend Tarik. It was his first time in the cryo tube and the boy didn’t know what to expect, would he have dreams, or would he just close his eyes to open them a second later, already at their final destination.

Apart from being a medic the boy loved to learn, he didn’t care what sort of information he would read next but as the time passed he found himself leaning towards the mechanics, or anything to do with the machines. Of course he was not as good at it as he was at mending people but from time to time it was useful. History and philosophy were the other subjects he liked to read about, but alas there were not many people who knew history, or those who were interested in philosophy, especially in the Marine Corps. Taking a mental note to talk with the newly commissioned android on the subjects at hand, the boy closed his eyes.

There were no dreams but cold slumber. Altair opened his eyes. His first experience in a cryo pod was uneventful, Altair still didn’t know if the lack of dreams was a normal reaction, or was it just him. Curiosity getting the better of him, Altair decided to take another nap, when he had a chance. Sitting up and feeling a bit dizzy, as the hot blood pumped through his veins Altair looked around. Everybody were up and about, the boy it seemed was among the last to wake up. Waiting for his brain and body to get used to the surroundings, Altair slowly climbed down from the pod.

Making sure that his friend had woken up, Altair in total silence made his way towards his locker. Oblivious to the clamor around him, Altair went through the process of dressing up. Even though the process of being dressed in uniform was relevantly new to the boy, Altair made sure that everything he wore was in order: his boots clean and shining, his clothes ironed, his armor spotless and covered with grease. Spiting at the pieces of cloth the boy rubbed at several places of his armor. Taking a look at the mirror the boy nodded to himself, everything was perfect, just as he was taught at the boot camp not long ago.

Fastening his belt and attaching his helmet, the boy took the extra pack, he was supposed to carry, which contained the medical supplies and made his way towards the mess hall, along with the rest of the marines. Taking a cup of tea and a tuna sandwich, Altair grinned to himself. The food he was eating was called “trash food” by his parents back at home and under no circumances he was allowed to eat it. With that though in mind the boy took a big peace out of his sandwich and proceeded through the process of eating, just as he examined the contents of the med pack.

Con looked up at his fellow squad leader and shook his head smiling. I geuss he's just excited to be asquad leader, Con thought to himself.

Slowly surveying the marines around him Con caught sight of a marine, who either kept really good care of his gear or was a total newbie, and since he seemed really jittery Con geussed he was a green. Walking over to him Con stuck out his hand in a traditional greeting on earth.
"Hey buddy, I'm Con Alexander, leader of the Hell Hounds, whats going on?"

A slight rock in the ship caused Con to stumble forward but he caught himself on the new marine quickly and stood back up.

As he got closer to the "freezer" Morrison heard the murmur, stirring, and occasional bark of his platoon.

His heart almost skipped a beat when the reality of that dawned on him- those men where his undivided responsibility.

Why isn't that as fun as it sounds? he thought.
Apachetear wrote:"What up LT?...you heard what this mission's about yet?" he called, raising his voice slightly

"Nothing much, smiles. How about yourself?" Morrison paused to take a puff from the cigar "seems to be a security run- but it doesn't mention who we are supposed to be keeping an eye out for... we're gonna get a more extended briefing dirtside, though."

Smiling, Jacob looked up from the corner he was in...it was odd - but being in a corner centered him, made him feel comfortable.

"Hey, I've got a lot of kissing left in me Con, reckon I'll make General one day" Chuckling, Jacob looked at Con's promotion "Reckon you'll be able to do the marines justice as a squad leader?" The question was rhetorical, of course Con'd do well - but still, asking the question might reveal some dark worries...

Standing up, Jacob looked down

"Fancy getting some food?"

Returning the nod Jacob stated the obvious

"So, you'd be some of the fresh meat we've been sent..." Smiling warmly, quite at odds with the sinister remark, he continued "You'll forget the shit they taught you at boot camp - apart from the really important stuff soon enough...then you can learn the nitty gritty stuff...take care now" he slapped the marine on the top of the arm in good humour.

Soon enough he'll be a veteran, the shit always seemed to hit the fan for our old platoon - why would it be any different for this platoon...

Whipping his head round in surprise at the scream, Jacob was startled out of his post-sleep fuzz of happiness...

"Jesus Gavin, that was a shock to the system...this isn't boot camp any more - they know the drill! Still, you're squad..." Jacob's voice trailed off. He looked at the scar tissue around his jaw and thought back, now it was something he could smile about - but on extraction from the mission he had been more than a little worried about his chances of living. "Just remember not to catch any more bullets with your teeth, you're luck only holds out so long in this place"

Laughing he lit another cigarette, and leant against a wall "Anywho, marines - I think Jones here said it better than I did...get your gear and get moving"

Looking round and catchin Gavin's eye he simply said "Make sure they're all ready in 5...don't scare the fresh meat too much though - I want 'em in one piece for the mission"

"Just trying to scare the shit out of 'em now sir. Don't want to have an accident on the field right boss." Taking a puff off his cigar he turns back to the marines still milling about. "Ok you heard the man and you apparently know the drill! Now move it people I am going to get a coffee you better be in gear by the time I am done!" Putting the cigar back between his teeth he moves off to the table with the coffee.

Saluting the two men as he approaches he puts on the newly minted cap that the pilots gave him on his way in. "So Sarge I only plan to catch cigars with my teeth." Pouring himself a cup he nods over to Con and gets the sugar pouring while he talks. "So Lt. any word yet what the op is yet or is it still unclear at this juncture."

Picking up the cup he stirs his coffee into his sugar and looks at the other gentleman at the table. "So Private.... Harmon all geared up and ready to go are you? Well why don't you go grab some grub looks like one of the others has found his way that far."

Looking into the galley seeing Altair decked out and pratically glowing in his shiny new armor. "Sarge see I can be nice when I want to be. I hope this won't be a night op that boy gets hit by a flashlight he going to go off like a lighthouse. Well back to the cold cuts eh, Corporal?" Turning he still stirringhis coffee into the sugar.

"Oh what a hopeless sight this is you know this ship doen't have a poop deck or a bilge bay? If you boys don't hurry I will make you build both then clean them. Come on where the fire the drive the desire to go forth and be the ultimate badass of the marine corp!?" Perhaps the Sarge was right perhaps the nice guy was the way with the .... proper motivation.

Morrison couldn't help but to smile.

Typical Jones, always have to be occupied... Morrison thought.

"I'll let all of you know as soon as Smiles, I mean, Sergeant Honeysett has made sure that you lot have eaten, and are awake- I won't brief the platoon before then. Besides, I'll be needing some time to digest the whole briefing. Ok, Jones?" Morrison playfully slapped the fresh squadleader on the shoulder before he walked into the messhall.

Note to self: Steer clear of cornbread.

Morrison put his cigar out in the coffee, and then poured the whole concoction down the garbage dispenser, as he got into the feeding line behind his Sergeant.

"Smiles- I've been thinking- if mission permits, perhaps we ougtha use both APC's on this mission. It seems like our AO is sort of... backwards. Very, very rural. It could help us cover more ground quicker, but I'm worried about the boots, do you think they're up to it?"

Softly Ronald sat up, grumbling he just went and putted on his things, he only answered people with a mutter, he felt so friggin bad. He started to really wonder why he went around. He wiped his nose a bit stood away from the others, putting his equipment on. Black rings arond his eyes and he rubbed his slick hair, sighing.

"Hell, if my first mission was sitting in the back of a car I'd be chuffed to bits..." Jacob absent mindedly got out his zippo lighter and flicked the lid open and closed, making the soft metallic clicking noise "I think the APC'd be useful to cover ground, and it's a lot more scary to rurals to see a giant hunk 'o' metal rather than 4 or 5 people..."

Eyeing up the new recruits, Jacob saw the fresh fatigues and the shiny armour

Looking over to Gavin Jacob smiled and agreed with the fact that everything was too shiny...

Calling out to the new recruits

"Alright Fresh meat when everything's eaten and, maybe, enjoyed. Get your armour dulled - boots too - I don't want light to shine off you giving away our position potentially"

Looking back to Morrisson he lowered his voice "How many you reckon'll survive this campaign - old and new guys?" He took care to make sure nobody else heard him, that sort've talk was demoralising...but Jacob liked to speculate...

The man had never looked worse, black rings under his eyes, his eyeballs almost totaly red but he seemed otherwise perfectly fine.
