Date: 22nd October, 2080AD, 0710UT
Location: Lambda Serpentis, 3 kilometers out from Pirate base
Operation: Thunderclaw
Mission timer: 00:55:45

The APC ground to a halt - It's turbine engines soft whine faded away. The sliding door to the crew compartment opened with a rumble and the Marines fanned out of the craft. The large steel monster ticked sharply as the engine and exhaust parts began to cool in the chilled night.

The easy eights found themselves in a small gorge - The ground was was soft and densely covered with a short silvery green grass. The sky was dark grey and no stars could be seen through the clouds above. The darkness that surrounded them was compact. Lt Vincent brought up and glanced at her pocket computer; the light of the panel her gave her face an eerie pale blue hue. The pocket computer was linked to the costaguana and could be used to navigate. The Pirate base was 3150 meters to the north west of their current position.

Chappel crawled up to the lip of the gorge and peeked over it. A rolling landscape of grass and with scattered groups of large bushes disappeared in the distance in a milky white mist.

The Marines waited for Vincent plotting their current position. It was cold, not freezing temperatures, but still the marines shivered. Especially after spending the last 50 minutes in a warm and cosy APC. The air tasted metallic and the throats of the marines felt like they had consumed a tube of toothpaste. It was utterly silent all around them. The soft grass dampened everything - It was serene. The only thing that moved was the large, blimp like, banks of mist. They slid across the landscape majestically in the very faint wind.

I'm going to pull down my helmet's IR eye piece and scan the horizon for anything unusual.

"Bojan, Steel what are your orders?"

I'll crouch down with my Flame Unit in a firing stance while waiting for their reply.

Huey stuck his tongue and quickly drew it back in. The air was funny here, almost like iron, making it heavy in his lungs. "Can't wait till I get off this piece of shit" He thought to himself.

"Where's the scantily clad babes?" He asked his squad jokingly, his voice was a hushed whisper, not just because they were on a mission but the unnatural mist floating made him want to keep his voice down. Like if he spoke up something would come out and attack him.

Huey pulled down the IR sight from his helmet to get a better view. He got a better view even though there wasn't much to see. Controlling his breifing to stop from shivering he kept his rifle ready for trouble.

Eileen finally lowered her computer to look up at the surreal effect of the mist on the landscape. Normally the effect would be eerie, right now though it was welcome cover in the sparse terrain. Looking in the direction indicated by the map she couldn't make out so much as a sign of the base through the mists.

Eileen switched her comm to the squad leaders and Steel, "The base is just over three kilometers to the north west. Looks like the mist should give us some cover at first. We'll advance until we're in visual range, then take cover and observe."

"Bojan, Chappell, if you see any movement stop and take cover. Don't fire until we have an ID. Remember there's probably livestock moving in the area. I don't want us given away shooting at sheep."

Eileen switched her comms to the APC, "Priest, I'll want the APC moved up when we assault the base, for now wait here. And get hold of the Costaguana, see if they can get a weather reading. I want to know if this mist is going to burn off."

"Looks like your lucky day, marines. We're to scout forward of squad one , you see somethin' let me know, and no random firing!"

He looked over his unit to see if they registered.

"You heard it Breaks Shots, now lets move!"

The icy air was playing hell with Red's throat, and the order sounded more gruff than usual. He spat, and began leading the unit towards the base...

Dugan moved up, sweeping his eyes over the left flank, even through his IR eye piece the mist was causing visibility problems. He motioned to Pfc McKenzie to watch the right flank.

"Roger that LT," responded Nick over the commnet.

He adjusted his positioning so that his rifle was held comfortably as he watched second squad lead the way towards the pirate base.

"Chappell, Bojan keep your squads closely spaced, but not close enough that you all get taken out by a grenade. You heard what the LT said any movement you pick up, we stop and identify it before we blast it. And remember to make sure nobody has an itchy trigger finger."

"Bojan, get your squad following Chappell's we got us some pirates to kill! Hoorah!"

Nick let some of the tension he was feeling drain out of him. It was go time and that meant that things were going to get very explosive or at least it would if things went badly. He mentally shrugged at that thought and started moving, following second squad into the mist making sure he kept the last man in the squad in view at all times.
