Planet: Adullan
Location: Secessionist Space
Date: February 1, 2187
Mission Time: 01:32

1st and 3rd Squad

The grenade that the drone had fired burst instantly the moment it struck the ground. It’s fiery intensity was felt by everyone around. The small incendiary however served only to leave the feeling of a bonfire on the marines of the 1st and 3rd squad who immediately took cover the moment the drone came into view.

The drone was menacing and ominous in its stagnant skyward position for the first moment that it arrived, a sudden surprise for all the marines there. But after a few seconds of taking cover, the entire group had a handle on the situation and began opening fire.

The high pitched scream of pulse rifles, a Smartgun, and the low rumbling of sentry gun guns firing into the small device were the response. The drone managed to remain airborne over the unit for a mere thirty seconds before exploding. Exactly who’s bullet finished it off was impossible, but it was safe to say that at least every marine that fired a shot landed a head.

Slowly the group resumed its battle positions, prepared to advance further, while the fire from the initial grenade from the drone still burned over the now charred bodies of the rebel force. When suddenly there was a sound.

VVVVVVVVVVVWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

A low rumbling was heard over the tree line, and a light vibration was felt at the marine’s feet. For a moment it was unclear what the source was. But all suspicion was swept aside as what was clearly a barrage of surface to orbit missiles lifted off from several miles away and race off into the sky.

While they stood in shock for a moment, wondering where their enemy managed to get a hold of such advanced, deadly weapons being launched at the cruiser in orbit, they were caught completely off guard by yet another sound.

SSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

A pair of in atmosphere jet craft raced over head. They were fast, hardly noticeable if one were to have blinked. But the sound they made flying over was immense. They did not seem to notice the marines there however, instead flying much further back behind the lines.

And suddenly there was another low rumbling, but this time behind them. A series of controlled hits that seemed to drop in succession. Though some of the more recent marines may not have been familiar, anyone who had been engaged in a prolonged conflict would have immediately recognized the sound of bombs being dropped.

But just as soon as the sound faded, another sound took its place. The snapping of what was clearly far off machine gun fire, and a lot of it, no doubt where the 52nd Company had staged.
----------------------------------------------

2nd Squad

Bell fell in with the squad as ordered. There was very little time to waste as the barrage of missiles flew over up into orbit. By the time he introduced himself the pair of fighters was zooming passed, leaving them just as confused as the squads that were further up.

Colson dragged Morse to the treeline, just in time for him to finally stop slipping in and out of consciousness and to have officially passed out. The large marine lay in a slump, his M56 Smartgun still tied off onto his chest where it had been when he foolishly attempted to disarm the landmine he stepped on. The bloody stump of his leg had stained his pants a muddy brown and red, but he was stable.

As they got their bearings Quinn was receiving a very large stream of messages into his ear. They were numerous squads of the 52nd company all calling in reporting firing happening on their position, stating they were returning fire, and requesting orders and assistance.

Then their voices were cut off, as the commanders voice came through.

”This is Sergeant Danzo, to all Marines!” Came the first voice. ”52nd is to dig in and hold position, Lieutenant’s orders. Extraction’s inbound. Hold the line, Marines! We’re gettin’ the hell outa here.”

Moments later a new voice was heard, this time it was Lt. Colonel McGehee.

”McGehee to Quinn. McGehee to Quinn. The situation is far more hostile then we thought. We’re pulling out. I’m coming in to extract you. Dropship arriving in four minutes. I repeat, dropship arriving in four minutes. Get your people in position for immediate dust off. Over.”

The transmissions then immediately went back to 52nd company calls for support, and the crackle of pulse rifle fire and explosions happening many miles behind them.

Sal let his gun fall to his side as the sight unfolded in front of him. Missiles. God Damn MISSILES.

"Who the fuck gave these shits fucking MISSILES?" Sal swore. "They can't program goddamn sentry guns, but they've got fucking-" He swore, gripped his gun. He looked around, waiting for an order.

Running off on his own had been a waste of adrenaline before. From the sounds of things, he'd be getting his share of medic work, though.

Bell sighed nervously, checked his watch, forgot what time it was and checked it again, thinking about the next four minutes. Then he put in a fresh clip, counted his ammo and checked his kit.

Samantha had barely let out a sigh of relief upon seeing the drone fall to the combined firepower of 1st and 3rd squads and having confirmed that all of her people were okay; when the sights of SURFACE TO ORBIT missiles and then fast-mover-bombers dropping on THEM assaulted her senses.

"What....what....when....how?..."; she incoherently mumbled to herself, dumbfounded at the sudden change from fighting ill-equipped Rebels to being COMPLETELY over-matched in the blink of an eye. With a struggle, she shook her head and snapped back to present.

Moving along the line; she found the best cover available and directed Sal, Mark and Eric too it; taking cover after them and saying; "Alright....I don't have the first damn clue what the hell is going on; but we're gonna stay frosty, under-cover and we're gonna evac all together when the Dropship gets here; so NOBODY do anything stupid and hold this position, got it?"

She will then cautiously poke her head out to see if 1st squad is doing okay and will call over the platoon-wide comms channel; "This is Sam; 1st Squad is holding. Dirk; El-tee; you need anything?"

That went well, Dmitri thought as everything went to shit in seconds. Leaving off his original query, he scrambled for cover with the rest of his squad mates and listened in on the comms as best he could.

Eric watched the drone being ripped to pieces. When it fell from the air he celebrated with a "Woo!" Then he hit the deck instinctively when the missiles fired. This was all going to hell in a hand-basket pretty quickly.
"Alright....I don't have the first damn clue what the hell is going on; but we're gonna stay frosty, under-cover and we're gonna evac all together when the Dropship gets here; so NOBODY do anything stupid and hold this position, got it?"
Eric moved to where Sam told him to and hunkered down. "Yes, ma'am," he said.
"Who the fuck gave these shits fucking MISSILES?" Sal swore. "They can't program goddamn sentry guns, but they've got fucking-" He swore, gripped his gun. He looked around, waiting for an order.
Roberts tapped Sal with his elbow. "Fuckin' traitors."

"Aye, Ma'am. Doing nothing stupid." Mark replied as he continued to huddle behind the thick tree that had given him cover against the drone. Missiles, fighter jets, this mission had gone to all kinds of the unexpected. It was almost like, well, exactly what happened when they lost the snakefighter. As the atmosphere seemed to clear a little bit and the sound of bombs died off, Mark's mouth caught up with his thoughts, and he decide to share his theirs with the rest of the squad.

"These insurrectionists, whoever they are, had no time to verify those guys were dead before they tossed a drone-guided firebomb on them – who ever this group is, they have no compunctions of throwing recruited bodies in front of their military hardware. These were fanatics intended to be nothing more than a speedbump while they readied their missiles. Poor Bastards."

With a snort, Mark fished out his motion tracker and fiddled with the sensitivity, trying to block the ghost images coming from the aircraft noise.

Sal flinched at the contact from Roberts, but sighed as the obvious answer spun new worries into his head. "Shiiit, if they've got missiles on the ground," He looked from Roberts to Sam. "They might have rigged em on the freighters, distract our ride looking down and they throw a sucker punch in the static."

<Tag Roberts/Sam>

If the missiles were nukes, even if they went off prematurely, the electromagnetic pulse would, briefly, scramble most electronic navigation and detection systems. If timed right, enough time to cover a volley up the tail pipe of any ship not looking in the right direction.

It's a cheap shot, and if Sal was fighting a superior foe, it's what he'd do... wait. This all started because someone tried to steal their hardware, what if this was the same play for bigger stakes.

"How much of marine contingent is still on the ship in orbit?" He asked the squad. <Tag Squad>

This is all a bit crazy Dave thought to himself, what have I gotten myself into? He set his watch timer for three minutes and fifty seconds and stood by Quinn awaiting orders. “Anything you want us to do until extract?” he inquired. “How far away is the rest of the platoon?”

<Tag Quinn and 2nd squad>

Are we close enough to be evacuated all together? Dave thought to himself. He scanned around him as best he could awaiting orders and hoping that they'd all make it out and off this rock.

The carnage of the short lived battle did little to stop the anger Dirk felt over the wounding of his friend and the ambush of his men. These bastards wanted a fight, and they got one. The sound of the ground to orbit missiles shooting into the sky snapped him out of the blood lust. His mind raced for a moment. Ground to Orbit missiles? His mind screamed, how the hell did these backwards assed rejects get ordinance like that? The missiles however weren't the only shock as they were followed closely by a pare of atmosphere jets screamed over head.

"Quinn, you seeing this?" Dirk said as his followed the track of the two fighters.

Before Quinn could answer the comm lit up with chatter. ”McGehee to Quinn. McGehee to Quinn. The situation is far more hostile then we thought. We’re pulling out. I’m coming in to extract you. Dropship arriving in four minutes. I repeat, dropship arriving in four minutes. Get your people in position for immediate dust off. Over.”

"You heard the man Marines. Move out. Sam Fall back to Quinn's position, Third and I will join you there. We need the autoguns on full defense. These guys are better then we though and I don't want them hitting us while we are on our heals. Let's go Marines!"

Quinn's mind stopped for a moment when he saw the missiles arcing skywards, their motors leaving behind a blooming contrail, which almost drowned out the distant howl of turbines as the enemy fighter-bombers streaked past to drop their payload on the supporting company's position.

His thoughts rapidly caught up to him as he realized what sort of situation he was in. First things first. He kneeled down near a tree and brought his long-range comm unit up, relayed through Obi's mike set.

"Navy Assets, be advised, ground to orbit missiles incoming. Repeat, vampire, vampire, vampire!" he snapped, then received the message from McGehee.
”McGehee to Quinn. McGehee to Quinn. The situation is far more hostile then we thought. We’re pulling out. I’m coming in to extract you. Dropship arriving in four minutes. I repeat, dropship arriving in four minutes. Get your people in position for immediate dust off. Over.”
"Negative sir, enemy fast movers in AO. LZ is too hot, I repeat, too hot!" he said, somewhat alarmed. "If you assist 52nd company, I could infiltrate and raid the base, how copy?"

*Sigh*, "Too good to be true"

Bell kneeled, scanning out from on of Quinn's flank, waiting for someone to finally cross his firing arcs.

Samantha heard Dirk's order and responded over the comm with a crisp; "Aye-aye Sarge". She then turned to her squad and said; "Okay, Dirk's ordered us back to the El-tee's position; let's do this quick and staying low. Sal, you and Mark first while Roberts and I follow."

She then poked her head cautiously up and upon seeing no incoming fire headed their way, she orders; "Go, go, go!"; while keeping her Rifle tucked into her shoulder and scanning the perimeter for any signs of enemy movement or fire.

If she sees none; she'll then say to Roberts; "Alright, Eric; let's go....stay as low as you can with that thing; I'll be right on your right". She'll then fall back, staying on Eric's 4 o'clock position the whole way.

Mac just stared up at the sky and watched the action and felt for the first time a very small player in here and now. He gathered his gear and loaded a fresh clip for his sniper rifle and hefted the rifle with one hand and his pulse rifle in the other, "Enough with the kiddie gloves..." He spat and gathered with the rest of his squad.

"Sir!, I seen the like o' this back home when yer enemy has gotten too close to something they shan't." he said to Dirk. "First is to trap their lads in town and burn up all the rides that can carry them out. Its then the nasty shite starts, door to door and block by block till ya find em then...then you just start fires and burn'em all alive. That McGehee is going to get his lads killed and us wit 'em if we stand 'round here."

Mac knelt down and scanned the forest around them with a keen eye, "If they dust the cruiser in orbit we're lookin' for another ride outta here sir. Might I humbly suggest we get lost in these trees while its quiet and link with our wounded friend, then just start running. Whoever is in charge up in that mountain will be aiming to wipe out any witnesses to the firepower they have stored up...which means they got ah way to move all that gear and that's our way off world iffin' the shite hits the fan. Either way...no dust off will make it to us unless they got a hot stick and the luck o the Eights with them, which I'm discovering is queer moniker. Been a pleasure lads...if we dinnae make it out o this."

"Aye" Mark acknowledged, taking a second to make sure his pack was secured and ready. With a deep breath and a settling of his posture, he moved the motion tracker to his left hand and drew his pistol. Laying his right arm atop his left to steady the weapon while leaving the tracker readable, he got in line with Sal and waited for the other Marine to head out.
