Land Mine

Okay, let's figure out what we're gonna do about this land mine.

I'm scanning the player guide for any skills that might apply to land mines. Here's what I've got so far:

Balance: Could have some relevance. It could affect Morse's ability to hold still or to mess with the mine without shifting his weight.

Special Weapons Operation: "Including Grenade Launchers, Flame Units, and Remote Sentry Guns." This seems to be the only skill it might fall under. It isn't listed but it's the best I've got.

Scouting, infiltration, and awareness would have all been useful in avoiding the mine in the first place...

One thing we might try is putting something heavy on the mine trigger so that Morse can step away from it. That's pretty risky though... I'll ask Pale Rider what skill to use.

Edit: Oops! I missed the skill "demolitions". It's a sub-skill of heavy weapons. Pale Rider said that's the applicable skill. We only have one man with that Skill... Dakka.

I have heavy weapons too. But given the rating I just assume its an operational knowledge more then anything else. What I wanna do is put one of the sentry gun boxes on it and unload the weapon.

I don't think it's worth the risk of removing the weapon. Leave the box with the gun in it and get the hell away from the mine. The box doesn't weigh that much without the 20 lb. gun.

Let's focus on not getting killed.. and on what Pale Rider said.

Me: "What skill would be used to disarm it? The closest skill I can find is special weapons operation."

Pale RIder: "Yeah, but Dakka is a Demolitions expert."

Demolitions is a sub-skill of heavy weapons, so it is not really the same. He appears to be the one man who can save you. Using the sentry gun seems like a bad idea unless we have no other option.

In the meantime, everyone in your squad should take a few steps back and keep an eye out for more mines.

Although Colson isn't much help at this point it might be worth having him go on point should Morse survive this part. He has fairly high Awareness and Scouting skills, E and P respectively. High agility as well should that might play a part.

Also I just noticed my char sheet hasn't updated from my last upload. Not that it would have any relevance at this point in time, just thought I'd mention it in case.

I agree with you taking point. Awareness and scouting are important.

I noticed your combat drops were still at zero, but I didn't want to say anything lol.

Since it sounds like it's a pressure plate, pretty sure it's an IED, unless we somehow got transported back to WW2. Fortunately, IEDs can be simple to dismantle, depending upon the bomb maker and how creative s/he got.

And it's a pretty easy guess that this one mine could eliminate the entire squad. Might even be linked to a claymore.

Well, pressure plate mines could come back into usage for any number of reasons over the course of 200 years; especially in an alt-universe based on a movie where 4 man fire-teams are called 'squads'; Nobody mentions using any kind of drones or sat-intel; there's such a thing as 'light armor-piercing' rounds; two handguns well over 200 years old are in use; etc., etc. :)

Simple point: I wouldn't base our characters' weapon-technology knowledge on early 21st century practical application of it. For any number of reasons; various groups throughout the world re-discover old technologies and ways to utilize them; frequently 'discovering' tactics that were used decades/centuries/etc. ago. These colonists might have figured out how to create the equivalent of ww2 mines; maybe because nobody expects them anymore; so the means of countering them have been forgotten; etc.

Just a thought! :)

Very true, hence likely an IED. And even in Vietnam they had some nasty shit. Claymores, WP, etc. We should also keep an eye out for other traps, like malay whips and pitfalls.

Looks like Dakka is bowing out. Too bad. I appreciate that he told us instead of just disappearing.

Morse is disobeying Quinn's order... interesting. I'm hoping he survives!

Maybe it is linked to a Sentry gun and will trigger it to begin firing. Or maybe six drones will sweep out of the sky and begin bombing Runs. Maybe the colonists are actually nudists and this triggers a volleyball game. :-)

Please hold all posts until after Morse posts.

Quinn is already with second squad, and he is a Grand Master of medical aid. Just saying, maybe he's a better choice. Regardless, you are medic, and maybe Quinn doesn't have a K52 Medical Kit with him, which would be best.
