Ranks and Protocol

Hey folks,
I assume that we are working on a loose US Military template given the setting?
Well just a little heads up. I'm a British Civilian with the only 'military' experience having been the ATC (Cadet Branch of the RAF) a good number of years ago. Now I'm somewhat familiar with British army and air force ranks but not with the US military, nor am I sure about protocol when dealing with officers within the US military.
So this is just a heads up asking you to be gentle with me if I make a mistake regarding protocol/operational procedure, as I'm aware a number of you are current and ex service personal and it comes second nature to you.
I've picked up on somethings (Like not addressing NCOs as 'sir') but I'm sure there is a lot I've got to learn.
I invite anyone to take the opportunity to educate me before we start properly.
