Comm Discipline and Call Signs

Post by pants » Mon Dec 01, 2008 10:05 am

Hey I just noticed that my comm discipline is flipping terrible!  Do we actually have call signs within the platoon?  If so can somebody tell me what they are?

Plus what is the actual procedure for talking to someone within a platoon?  Obviously this is just a game but I like to keep things as realistic and true to life as I can.

I mean if I keep calling Honeysett 'Sergeant Honeysett' and one of the bad guys notice then that's going to make him an even bigger target than before not that I mind because lets be honest if they are shooting at him then they ain't shooting at me!

Usually radio etiquette is reserved for the radio. However, instead of saying "Sergeant Honeysett", just say "Sarge". It's short and things get over more quickly.

Also, everyone keeps asking for orders. That is really starting to get annoying. You simply follow the plan and keep doing it until told otherwise instead of saying every other minute if any new orders came in. If new ones come, AND you're lucky enough that they concern you, you might be told about it. If not, keep rolling with what you were doing.

As far as enemy snipers determining who's in charge, just don't do any salutes. And I think we have small comms that we can use to talk to each other so we don't have to shout or anything. Also, keep the chatter to anyone else to an absolute minimum! I cannot stress that enough! A bunch of Marines talking and laughing is a bunch of DEAD Marines.

Yeah I'm guilty of asking for orders a bit too much.  I make no apologies! ;D

But seriously though I agree with everything you said Quinn, especially the talking and laughing marines being dead marines, but at least I'm going to die with a smile on my face...my cold dead, probably badly mutilated, face... :(

Yeah as far as I understand the whole platoon is all geared up with individual comm sets called the PRC 489/4 Communication system (Kudos to the Wiki for the name) which is integrated into the helmets.

That's what I meant by having call signs.  I thought that each component of the platoon from squad level up would have an indvidual call sign rather than saying Sarge as there are 2 Sargeants in the platoon and you want to differentiate between them quickly.

Basically I'm asking so I have an excuse for calling myself 'Big Bear 1' in game. ;D

It'll probably go Alpha Squad, Bravo Squad, Charlie Squad and Delta Squad, with Alpha 1, Alpha 2, so on and so forth. Although I think you have something here.

Also peeps, you can use hand signs to tell very simple commands (flank this way, missile launcher fire on that position) and stuff like that.

ALSO, you only call an OFFICER sir. Sergeants and Corporals parent's are married and they work for a living!!  ;D

Yeah, being a corporal doesn't mean you have to defer to the rank CONSTANTLY, but just treat them with respect.

I like how Pants has raised an issue with the Call signs. So far, I have used India Kilo as my radio sign, which sounds lame and retarded. Maybe we could all brainstorm and select call signs for yourselves? It would give the game a bit of a more realistic feel. What do you guys think?

Good idea Private!  Even though Nick will have ultimate power over our call signs I'm sure if we come up with some interesting names he might consider letting us use them.

Quinns Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta squad is probably the most likely choice but I'm quite partial to 'Big Bear'.  I'm not sure what everybody else wants to be called!

There were call signs in the old rules, I can't remember them though.  ???

But Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta would be fine for squads. I don't think you then really have to have separate ones for each member of the squad though, as it'd be a nightmare to remember them all but saying that Alpha One would be 1st Squads Squad Leader and Bravo One 2nd Squads Squad Leader and so on. That just leaves call signs for the Lt and two Sgt's to work out.
