Byron's Bandits is an old gang. All vets know each other pretty well and have been on a few ops together. New characters are fresh from boot camp and have a few simulated drops at best.

PS. And all know Space Marines eats silly Orks for breakfast.

You can play Smiles if You want to, but he will not have the experiences he had from USCM 1.0. For example no contact with Aliens species et al.
