M3T4

2179 AD, 6th October
Location: Sol system, Earth, United Americas, New York
Mission timer: 00:29:19

Sections located on map at: E3:6 (section 1: squad 1 & command) and E4:4 (section2: squad 2, 3 & support).

The Marines rounded the first bend. The sound of the thunderstorm behind them softened, as did the idling APC turbine engines. The sound was replaced by that of running water and the echoes of drips. The air was humid, almost moist, and warm. The smell was worse in here, but still it smelled more of decay and mud than excrements and sewage. Section two held the eastern edge while section one held the western. The tunnel roof angled down steeply towards them now and the marines helmets soon scraped the roof as they walked further in. In front of them it became pitch black dark and the marines folded down their IR vision aids from their helmets. The ground became slippery and it was not long before the first marine slipped and skid into the rapidly flowing water. The water was knee deep and filled with lumps that immidiately triggered the imagination. A muffled curse was heard as another marine slipped. The Marines soon reached the first two branches. The sections split up and headed into one each while support stayed in the main pipe ready do move into either. The soft thumping of the motiontracker started its eerie song. "Nothing" Patch said looking at Dugan whos face in the IR was a greenish blob with glowing white eyes. The Marines moved slowly into the pipes, the pipes were cramped and the marines had to bend down slightly moving through them. There was no ledge here so the marines had to wade in the muck. "Travel the universe they said...see new places..." someone muttered. "Shut up" someone snarled at the comedian. "Hey! look the lumps in the water are glowing..." someone retorted. He was right, here and there the IR revealed slightly hotter pieces of unnamed materia that floated by their legs. The marines were half way into the pipe when section 1 picked up something moving. "Contact!" Patch said, a little to loud perhaps. "Ten meters...closing fast"

(Contacts position is: E2:9)

00:29:19

Jean heard the bickering and complaining of the other Marines around her. She agreed with them. She also found it odd that they would start in the sewers. If Marines complained about this, she couldn’t imagine civilians hiding out in the dark muck, even if the police were chasing after them. If her memorization served her, and it did, there were plenty of access points out into the surface streets. In fact, she knew that there was a thirty-Plex movie theater over their heads on the streets. She wasn’t going to mention that to them just yet because the thought of leading into a building with twenty foot ceilings between each floor, and a six foot clearance from floor to Styrofoam ceiling covers, was a death trap. Yes, she hoped for the best, she hoped that these creatures were in the sewers if they did end up emerging from the poor frightened souls that ran.

Jeans emotional programming seeded her to hope that there was still a chance for the humans that ran in fear for their lives into this dark musky place under the streets of New York.

"Contact!" Patch said, a little to loud perhaps. "Ten meters...closing fast"

Jean was hip-to-hip with patch so she could get a look at his motion tracker. She might have been synthetic but she was limited in functions she wished she had. Having an internal motion tracker would have been nice, but that would have ruined her capacity to think more Human, just as her programmers wanted; right now, she didn’t want that either, because a wave of dread and anxiety shot into her processor and made her shiver as she saw the contacts speed.

“If it were mechanical, we would be hearing engine noise by now. No human can move this fast unless they aren’t hip deep in water like we are,â€

Moving along on the right hand side of the tunnel (posn: E4-4 moving to E4-1) , 2 Squad lead 3rd and Support Squad's into the darkness.  The tunnel roof getting lower and lower, until it forced the marines to move into the centre of the tunnel and wade through the dark, tepid flowing water.  Footing was precarious as the ground was slippery and slimy.  The only navigation aids the marines had was their IR helmet lens, turning the darkness into a green tunnelscape.  Obi still moving in the tail end charlie postion of 2 Sqds' formation wiped the sweat out of his eyes.  The humidity was rising and the temperature getting warmer.  All the marines were sweating inside their fatigues and armour.  These things really like the dark.  Keying his headset, Obi spoke softly on the Sqd's channel.

"Slow and steady lads, the last thing we need is a marine down with a twisted ankle.  Remember we got 1 Sqd and Command covering our left flank.  Check your targets though, it would be really easy zap each other in here."

Gazing around with his IR  Obi noticed hot spots that appeared to be floating by the marines as they moved deeper into the tunnel. What the fuck is....  His thoughts were cut off with the shout of contact coming from a marine on the left.

Keying his headset Obi spoke quickly and quietly.

"We are in business lads, Miller have you got the contact on your tracker?"

Simovic moved forwards through the gloom closely followed by Honeysett. As they edged further in a few marines started to make light hearted comments but this was no time for jokes and so they'd been asked to cut it out, as they descended deeper into the dark all natural light was extinguished and they solely relied on their IR and Shoulder lamps. Patch who walked ahead of them not a hairs breath away from Wey then shouted out.
Patch wrote: "Contact!"
Simovic knew he needed to organise the Marines fast.

"First squad prepare for contact, be sure of your targets and remember if they are those creatures they won't show up on IR. Command squad get ready to re-inforce if needed"

Simovic then took a firing stance himself, though it'd be unlikely he'd be able to get off a shot without hitting First Squad.

[Two shots with three phases of aim if he get a clear line of fire].

A shot of adrenaline flooded through Jacob's system. he brought his rifle up to his shoulder and started to wade to a better firing position...

"Hold steady guys! If its what I reckon it is, then it isnt gonna be shooting back - get it before it gets too close!"

Sighting down his pulse rifle he breathed slower, and tried to find a hint of movement in the darkness...

(OOC: Sorry for the absence - had a few net issues...)

Sam waded through the muck, grimacing at the thought and smell of all the foulness around her. She made sure she was walking behind and out of the fire-arc of both Sheppard's Incinerator and the Sarge's Smartgun.

Upon hearing Patch's calling out of a contact, her adrenaline spiked as nervousness seemed to rush through her whole body at once. Keeping the butt of her pulse rifle locked in her shoulder; she disengaged the safety but kept her finger off the trigger until she had a target. Taking a deep breath she tried to calm herself down and remember her training...

patch quickly looked up and realized that only squad 1 and command were gonna get to be able to see this target, or if need be to shoot at it.

he tipped the motion tracker slightly so jean could confirm his readings. "eight meters, still closing, almost at the tee intersect ahead" patch reported a little steadier now.

patch made sure he had angled his shoulder lamp to give good lighting at the approaching target "no indication of size... don't forget this thing could be beneath the surface" patch warned the marines around him.

patch lifted his pulse rifle to his shoulder and toggled the safety off "just in case" he whispered to jean.

Colwell braced his legs into a firing stance and continued to scan the tunnel ahead while awaiting orders from his squad leaders...

(aiming and shooting if ordered)

Dirk heard Patch call out. "Game time third. Check your targets abd be ready to fire. I don't want anything to get close to us. Got it?" Dirk said as he brought his M-41A up and scaned the darkness.

Chris kept his mouth shut as the platoon moved through the grime. As much as he tried, though, his right foot came out from under him and he fell face first into the black water, catching himself on his knees, shooting his right arm up high as to not get his weapon wet, whilst getting a mouthful of... well, use your imagination.

"You gotta be," Chris spat several times into the water. "Fucking kidding me."

He slowly peeled himself out of the water, shaking his head, spitting out goo and wiping his lips with the cleanest part of his sleeve. He hoped that wouldn't happen again. A few moments later he grinned slyly as he heard another Marine take a plunge. Now I don't feel like the only asshole. he thought to himself.

He heard the call for contact, and quickly scanned his surroundings. He was in a bad spot, especially with a flame thrower. He had to think fast and try to get himself in a position where he could both engage the enemy effectively but with minimal risk of hitting a friendly. His heart started to pound, but he remained cool and collected as he bounded through the water with speed, taking position across at the tunnel intersection. (E4:1)

This would allow him to watch the Northern and Eastern approaches, as well as support first squad if he had to. His hand tightened around the grip of the flame thrower. No. Can't use it. He quickly thumbed the burner of the incinerator off and let it hang from the one point sling. With a precise and swift motion, he cranked out his pistol, pulling the slide back ever so slightly to ensure he had chambered a round. It was ready to go. He kept the pistol at the ready, not wanting to level it quite yet. He was in position to support and cover, not to outright attack the enemy. That was first sections job at this point.

A million thoughts rushed through his head. The most prominent was the thought of a really bad infection if you got hit and got shit water all in your wound. He smirked at the thought, and awaited the fireworks.

by Morse
Morse flipped down the bi-pod at the front of the M41A-E2. He was still on rear guard and he'd had some trouble walking backwards in the watery muck they'd been traversing through. He hadn't quite slipped yet because he kept such a wide stance while walking. As opposed to some of the others in the platoon, Morse hated using his red-eye infra-red sight. It screwed with depth perception and ability to aim, something he already had issues with. He just relied on the shoulder light to keep things illuminated. But he didn't think that contact was already up yet.

"Contacts? Damn things probably just a rat or somethin done runnin downstream to get outa the ooze." Morse suggested, but he kept his eyes scanning the rear, though the contact wouldn't likely be coming from that direction.

Kurosaki was worried. Could it be...?

"Lippa, you're at the front. If it's not human blast it. Brown, Colwell, you're behind him. Quinn, guard the rear.

"Aye aye. Watch your fire and check your targets Second, we don't need any blue on blue in here." Quinn muttered to the squad. Holding position until the rest of the squad had passed, he took up rear-guard.

Yes Sir, Gaz replied to the Sergeant. He flicked the safety off his M41A, and let his finger rest lightley on the trigger. He stood there and waited for whatever came into his line of fire.

"Aye Sgt", replied LCpl Stormhurst.

He brought his rifle up, unsafed the action that was switched to burst, scanning the surrounding area. He moved to the wall closest to him to give Morse and Monks a firing lane.

Then he checked his grenade launcher unit and prepped it to fire.

"Sgt, are we OKed to use grenades"?
